Do you like your Memory Foam Mattress?

dragonmom - It’s pretty warm here year round and often hot some days in the summer. I like it to be cold when I sleep so I actually use a room a/c year-round so I’m not the best one to ask the question of but I don’t find the mattress any hotter than a normal mattress although I’ve read that some people do. However, from what I’ve read, they now have some models that purport to be cooler than others.

As far as ‘depth’ into the mattress, I don’t really sink into it much at all. It conforms to the body but not by having one ‘sink into’ it. The Costco mattress had much more sinking. You can easily check this out by laying on one for a couple of minutes. That’s what I recommend - try it out at a store that has them on display.

Another plus if that they don’t transmit motion - if one person is flopping aound the other person doesn’t feel it.

Ya but some of us * like the motion*

Happy to repot that we’ve been testing our tempurpedic for more than 8 years for all sorts of “other” activites, and the results have been fantastic! :)

I have a queen size NovaForm Pure Comfort Grand mattress that I purchased at Costco. I believe that this is NovaForm’s top of the line memory foam mattress. The mattress is 12" thick with 3" of premium memory foam and comes with a 20 year warranty. I’ve had mine for about six months and have had no issues with sinking, low spots, being too hot, etc. I paid $649.00 for the mattress, plus tax, and Costco delivered it to my home for free. Normal retail is $799.00. Costco will also take it back with no questions asked if you’re not satisfied. I’ve never tried a Tempurpedic, but I sleep very well on the NovaForm and it’s a lot easier on your budget.

I’m bumping this thread, yet again, as H and I are now in the market for a new mattress. We’ve had our current mattress, a king-sized inner-spring, for twelve years and I’ve been experiencing some lower back pain for the last few months, so we’re due for a switch.

We’ve been looking at memory foam mattresses. (We’ve been using Tempur-Pedic pillows for the last few years and love them.) Our favorite is the Tempur-Pedic “Cloud Supreme” but at around $3200, it’s a lot more than what we’d like to spend.

We have found a couple of less-expensive alternatives: One was a Sealy memory foam mattress that, for the same size, was almost half the price of the Tempur-Pedic. It felt okay, although not quite as comfortable as the Tempur. The Sealy also has only a ten year, as opposed to a twenty year for Tempur, warranty period. I’m just wondering how much if the cost savings does indeed make the Sealy a better value, or is it one of those “you-get-what-you-pay-for” scenarios.

The other less costly alternative is a memory foam mattress from a regional (northeast US)chain called “Bob’s Discount Furniture”. Their memory foam mattress is called the “Bob-o-Pedic”? We tried a pillow-top foam mattress out at one of their stores over the weekend and it felt pretty good. However, once when we got back home and looked up reviews of their mattresses online, the reviews were mixed, at best, with several very negative comments about their furniture quality and/or customer service. What also concerned me is that while we were in the store, the salesperson mentioned to us that as part of the warranty we would have to purchase their particular zip-up mattress covers, as they would not honor the warranty if there any kind of stains on the mattress. At the very least, this made me wonder why they would care about stains on a faulty mattress; aren’t they required to destroy them, anyway? Is anybody here familiar with Bob’s one way or the other?

Momonthehill—we went from the top-of-the-line super heavy superthick tempurpedic to a lighter weight more traditional one (the Deluxe). We sleep just as well. The bed is much easier to make (which is why the other one is now in the guest room). Before that, we had a knock-off tempurpedic. I am MUCH happier with the real thing.

Go with the real thing as dmd suggests. We bought the lower-end version of the Tempurpedic mattress (paid $1900 for a king about 8 or 9 years ago), and it has been one of the best purchases we ever made! Remember - your bed is the place where you are spending a quarter to a third of your life. Spend it in (relatively inexpensive) luxury :)

Momonthehill, Bob’s is strictly a “you-get-what-you-pay-for” kind of place. I’ve bought from them when I needed something that was just going to sit somewhere, look nice, and not get a lot of movement or wear and tear–bookcases, a TV console, that sort of thing. I wouldn’t buy a mattress from Bob’s, nor a couch, easy chair, etc. But I do appreciate their yummy free cookies.

We did the very same thing–redid the master bedroom and got a new bed that took a much smaller sized mattress. We went from the high-end Tempurpedic–which was fairly deep–to the deluxe model that is about 10 inches deep. The larger Tempurpedic from the master bedroom is now at our summer place. New one is much easier to make and easier to find sheets that fit over it.

Thanks for the feedback. We decided to go ahead and buy the Tempur-Pedic mattress set. We chose the “Tempur-Cloud” model, as opposed to the “Cloud Supreme” model-not quite as plush, but still very comfortable and much more economical. We also chose to buy the set from a smaller regional furniture store chain from whom we’ve purchased furniture previously. So we feel more comfortable than we would have, had we gone with either the Sleepy’s or Bob’s chain stores. (MommaJ, we also had shopped at Bob’s years ago, when we lived in Connecticut. Our kids were much younger back then and those complimentary cookies were a huge help in allowing H and I shop in peace. )
