Do you make your bed every day?

Some folks sandwich a comforter (or is that a duvet?) between 2 flat sheets that are folded at the top enveloping the insert. Some hotels also use this method (seen it a Westin and a Four Seasons). Real PITA to make that kind of a bed!!

Y’all inspired me to wash my sheets and comforter tonight. I don’t do it enough.

Ditto!!

I wash mine once a week. Good enough for me.

Top sheet in our house is the one between you and the cotton blanket.

Yes, same! I’ve just never heard the term “top sheet” - I always called it “flat” - maybe the sheet manufacturers should change the labeling to fitted and top!

Thanks for mentioning that idea. I love the duvet idea, but hate putting duvet covers on. The D who has lived in France quite a bit does it quickly and efficiently and says I have a deficiency of time living in Europe.

I grew up with top sheets, and have a whole pile of blankets and comforters used, weather dependent as I sleep in cold rooms in winter.

My bed is made daily, but sometimes not till I get back upstairs after coffee. As a hospital RN, I hate the look of unmade beds and compulsively straightened beds in patient rooms when working. I have cats and allergies-one reason I keep it made is to keep cat dander out, though as the current cat shares my bed, not sure if that point matters right now.

This is semi-related to this thread. I washed and dried our sheets. I was multi-tasking and husband said he could help. I said, “OK, take these sheets upstairs and put them away.” He said “OK, but where do they go?” We’ve lived in our house 18 years! To be fair, he does his fair share of housework, but it made me laugh and harass him.

My answer would be “Back on the bed!”

Top sheet and flat sheet are interchangeable terms when I use them.

My kids and some of my friends don’t like a top sheet/flat sheet and just sleep on a bottom sheet/fitted sheet and then the comforter. That bugs the heck out of me because I want layers! Sometimes I get a hot flash or it’s just hot weather and I want only a sheet on and not the whole comforter. Occasionally I will get so hot that I want nothing for a few minutes but usually I at least want the top/flat sheet.

I also feel like not having a top/flat sheet is like wearing jeans with no underwear! You gotta wash that more often!

The main reason I got my super duty Miele washer was to be able to wash king size comforters. We occasionally use a flat sheet in the summer but ever since we got AC/heat minisplit in the bedroom, we might just use a lightweight comforter year round except maybe a few heatwave days. Also helps that I’m past the hot flash stage which was not so bad at all for me.

One entrepreneur pitching his sleep sacks on Shark Tank was asked about why the sack had an opening for one foot. The guy explained that it is for thermoregulation. Sticking a foot out from under a blanket that feels just a little hot does help!

Exact reason I hate tucked in anything!

Me too! The first thing I do in a hotel room is untucking of all neatly tucked covers. Tucked definitely looks nice, but it just doesn’t work not for me.

The flat sheet is the top sheet.

I do it your way, using a duvet with a cover on top. I hate to wash the duvet cover and wrestle the duvet back in.

Many people (and hotels in Europe) skip the flat sheet as the duvet cover functions like a top sheet. Easy bed making, comfortable sleeping, but helluva chore on laundry day.

More and more US hotels doing the same, whether duvet or comforter.

We have no flat/top sheet and use a comforter (plus blanket in the winter) that gets washed weekly. Not going to deal with the duvet struggle, just not worth it.

Yes, and twin comforters fit in a washing machine more easily, which is another reason some people like 2 of those over 1 king.

Good point. King comforters do fit in our washer. D19 did have an extra puffy one which had to go to the dry cleaners though.

Really? I have never seen this in the US. Have heard of it in Europe but I have not run into it there.

I will never give up my top/flat sheet!

We have a fitted sheet, flat/top sheet, oversize comforter then a quilt on top. I really hate wrestling with duvet/cover, plus I don’t like how they look - they never seem to fit perfectly despite using clips to hold them in place. We have an extra large washer so I can for our oversize comforter in it. Since we use a top sheet, I only wash the comforter about once a month.

I’m the type of person who has to have some sort of something over me when I sleep. In the summer, a comforter can sometimes be a bit too much so using a top sheet is a must for me and the comforter can be tossed aside as needed. Top sheet can cover me where I want and I can let my legs dangle out if desired.

My kids have never liked top sheets. I guess they didnt like getting tangled up when they were little. As a result, I do use duvet/covers on their beds when they are home even tho I hate them. At least D19 puts hers back on herself but my boys can’t seem to get it right (I can’t blame them but I use the rolling method which is a little easier) However, with company I use a top sheet plus comforter/duvet cover.

Yes
I’ve been traveling a lot this year and several hotels had a white comforter and/or coverlet with no top sheet. I know because I am one who also immediately completely untucks sheets and anything else that might be tucked in!

We have a fitted sheet, an untucked top/flat sheet (I really love the crisp/cool feel of it), a thin coverlet bedspread, and then a folded comforter (in case it is chilly). In retirement, we added 2 small throw pillows
. with covers made from shams that match the 1993 valences we still love (picked the 2021 paint color to coordinate).
