Wondering if anyone has any thoughts or insight on this. S25 is most interested in Sports Analytics in Falk. We’ve been doing as much demonstrated interest as we can from CA. 2 sessions with Falk, a session with SU in general, follow up and back and forth emails with Falk and SU office of admissions, opening the emails. He’s decided SU is his #1 and considering Business Analytics (Whitman)or Economics (Maxwell) as his #2 major. Does he need to do virtual info sessions, email, interview, etc with 2 of the colleges? We are hoping for merit as will not get FA. Considering a trip to tour but not 100% sure. Should he scrap the idea of Sports Analytics and try for another major that may be more likely. He could minor in Sports Analytics.
His stats:
GPA: 4.3ish (after this semster)
SAT:1360 but taking again
9 APs, 3 DE, 1 honors (school doesn’t really offer honors classes only 2 in the school)
Rank: top 9%; school doesn’t rank but this is a CA metric that is given
ECs: mostly sports related including sports internship, started a club, various sports related awards
Any thoughts are appreciated. As an alum (30+) years, I’m thrilled he’s so interested but the price tag may not be what we are willing to pay if he doesn’t get some merit. For this reason, we won’t let him ED. Thanks!
My son got in for business, 3.7 uwgpa, 30 act, 5 AP’s, zero interest (I had no idea he applied), got some merit but definitely not enough for it to be affordable for us. This was in 2021.
Syracuse is a highly demonstrated interest school. It has become more difficult in the last two years. This year they said 45,000 applicants for 3,500 spots.
Thanks, Yes, I have run it. We will be full pay hence why we won’t let him ED even though it’s his #1. Appreciate your thoughts! Will need to figure out if we can tour and get him an interview.
If that’s the case, I strongly urge you to pre-set a budget - so you don’t have the $80K and $40K situation - and the student chooses $80K and you’ve done nothing to dissuade.
Set the # now - whatever it is - and not that anything above comes off - with no emotion.
It will make your life easier…this is assuming you are applying to schools to hit the budget, whatever you set it at. We used $50K - and lots came right off after acceptance (that had a chance to but didn’t meet the merit #).
Yes, they consider it - but the question says do you need to demonstrate in two colleges. You don’t “need” to demonstrate in either one - but they already have and I suggested they do in the 2nd.
But “need” to - meaning you can’t get in if you don’t - isn’t true.
No need to debate this - I was just answering the question as asked.
Thanks. Yes, he is aware we aren’t willing to pay $90,000 a year and that it would need to be in line or close to other acceptances. Hoping he’ll have options!
We have a general budget and most schools he’s interested in will fall into it. We are in CA but not expecting acceptance to public CA schools he’s truly interested in as it’s a mess. He’s planning on SU, FSU, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, UGA, South Carolina, Clemson, Tennessee, Michigan (this is a reach in all ways ), Indiana (Kelley), Colorado-Boulder, SMU, and maybe UC Davis, San Diego State, and U of Arizona-as true safety.
FYI, my kid was very interested in Falk for sports analytics last year. In the end he wound up at a different place, but the Falk sports analytics program was impressive and has exploded in recent years. At a fall 2022 meeting they said average SAT scores were highest for sports analytics and were around 1400. Just as a yardstick, my kid had a 780M/700V SAT, all As and 10 APs, strong athletic ECs with awards, top 2% of his very large class, and was offered $25K in merit aid. He def demonstrated interest by attending webinars, emailing etc.
I can’t remember if he chose a second school. Falk sports analytics was really all he was interested in.
