Do you sometimes shop where your daughter shops?

I’ve been following the many clothing, fashion, ‘good buy of the day’ etc threads. It got me wondering…does anyone else shop in stores which clearly are geared towards a young adult crowd? I’m referring to places such as Forever 21, H&M and Uniqlo.

I have found some really nice items at very attractive prices at all of these retailers. No, these are not investment pieces, nor are the items that would be appropriate for a night at the Opera. However, they are nice T-Shirts, tops and the occasional pair of pants. The costume jewelry can be quite cute. Uniqlo has great linen shirts and their cotton is of a nice quality.

H and I getting ready for a 5 week cruise/land trip. It will be in a mostly warm and humid climate. I purchased 4 T-shirts, 4-layering tanks, and two nice rayon flowing style tops for $70 at H&M. They look very cute and fit nicely. They may be items I only keep for one season. The T-shirts may not make it through too many washings but at that price I don’t even worry about bringing them back home.

Sometimes I wonder if the sales people (sales children ) wonder ‘what’s the old lady doing in here…is she senile and lost??? But I don’t let it stop me.

Are any other CC’ers hiding behind big sunglasses…shopping where their daughters shop?

I don’t even need the sunglasses to shop there. Who cares?

Well it might depend the age of the daughter! I have one 26 and one 17 - though both do not dress trendy but more classic. My D’s don’t shop at any of the places you mention. They shop at places like Gap, Madewell, TJMaxx, The Limited- and I will shop at all of those.

I’ve learned more value and saving $$ by actually purchasing things that I will likely want to wear more than one season (but not 15!) and can stand up and still look good through many tumbles in the washing machine/dryer.

I will shop at the Gap (s shirts and sweaters), Madewell, and Banana Republic for the same. One daughter will shop at H&M 9where no natural fibers exist). But they will shop at Saks, Bloomingdales and Niemans…where I shop. (No, they won’t to St John). JCrew is also a big deal for them…and sometimes I will find a sweater or two.

We both go to Macy’s, but I don’t think that’s what you meant.

So many people shop Forever 21 that we call it Forever 41.

My daughter and I both shop at the same online outlet stores (TheClymb, SierraTrading, etc.) and buy the same athletic clothing (Icebreaker, Skora). She wears a much smaller size than I do, though. As for fashion clothing? I’m pretty sure she does most of her shopping at Portland’s many vintage clothing shops–where I often recognize the styles but was bored of them twenty years ago.

I shop at J Crew - so does my son.

I’ve bought a few things from stores like that now that they carry plus sizes. And I’ve discovered that the jeans that fit me best right now are Old Navy, so whatever works. D mostly wears classics from thrift or consignment shops though, save for jeans. She got that from me. Although I am much heavier, she is bigger-busted and lately she has been snagging MY tops to wear as “oversize” pieces. Sweaters, asymmetrical tops and loose flowy things are all fair game. It cracks me up.

DD got me started at Anthropologie with her sales discounts. I try not to get the same thing she has since we wear the same size in some sweaters and tops. She sometimes takes things I don’t want befre I return them.

Anthropologie is the one store where both D and I often find things we like. Never the same things, though.

Sure. I don’t make it a habit to go into Forever 21 (and don’t know what Uniqlo is) but I do check out H&M, as do many women my age. The trendy higher-end stores (Madewell, Anthropologie, J Crew) also have things that interest me. Not everything, but a lot. Daughter and I both shop often at Ann Taylor… but she has yet to step into Talbots

I’ve been buying clothes from H&M since the mid-1990s, although lately I haven’t bought much there – I feel like the clothes in the last year have gotten even more trendy and younger than they used to be. I’ve bought jeans and basic tops – T-shirts and turtlenecks. Come to think of it, I bought a dress there a couple years ago that I wore to a wedding, that got a lot of praise.

I’ve bought from Uniglo, too. In fact, I wore a pair of Uniglo jeans into an expensive jeans store, and the sales clerk actually came up to me, pointed to the jeans and said they came from her store – I had to correct her.

Not Forever 21, though – I’ve wandered around the stores in the past but never seen anything there that I like, so I don’t even step in anymore.

I guess I’m pretty good at finding basic items at these stores. I’ve noticed other women my age shopping in H&M, and never felt like the sales clerks were critical of me – although maybe they’ve assumed I’m buying for my daughter!

I have bought a few things from American Eagle and Aeropostale. Mostly trendier sweaters that I know I’ll tire of in a season or two, or accessories. I cannot stand Forever 21 and it’s my daughter’s favorite store because she can afford to buy things there. Well, that and Goodwill.

We both buy in the Columbia outlet for outerwear. And both shop at DSW for shoes.

D and I both like Ann Taylor and Banana Republic as well as Ross, Costco, and Macys (when we have the energy to search). We have both bought a few items from sportswear stores and Uniqlo, but I find the items a bit pricey for quality.

Sure. D (24) and I went to forever21, she bought several sweaters, but I just bought one cause I didn’t feel like finding the dressing rooms. I don’t know where she usually goes, etsy and thrift stores, I imagine.
We both also like JCrew and Patagonia.

Yup. Lilly Pulitzer.

We are also big Marshall’s, T.J.Maxx, and Costco people. Our Ross stores seem to have really gone down hill. Many look like they are half empty, and what they do have is weird and ugly. I’ve never heard of Madewell…

We don’t have Marshalls and TJ doesn’t seem to have great prices nor selection–seem to do better at Nordstrom’s Rack, but that takes some hunting.

Yep. Goodwill, Salvation Army. . .
