Do you think that a URM stole your spot? Think again.

Whether you’re pmvd or not, please read the helpful responses from his threads. Do not read advice then forget about it or at least not try it.

Oh, and read the serious and helpful advice from Moire’s threads too.

I don’t really have much to address to the OP but more so some of the responses in the thread. First with how URM’s (i guess that is the term we’re using) get into college. Some people are saying people should get in on merit and skill alone- well, that is not how the world works. We live in a society that has institutionalized discrimination. For so many years it has made it so certain groups (those of oppressed nationalities) have a disadvantage in society from the beginning. B/c of poverty and the caliber of the high school that many of these people of oppressed nationalities attend, they are not exposed to the education and opportunities that many white students are exposed to before college. If affirmative action was not enforced many of these students, who have the capacity to advance but don’t get the chance, would not be admitted to these colleges b/c they are compared against students (usually white and upper middle class or higher) who got those opportunities early on. Affirmative action is needed to address the obvious imbalance in our system when it comes to race, class, and education. To say that colleges should only admit on merit, testing, etc., is ignoring that fact.

^ ^

What’s the difference between being poor and of color and being poor and white? Why should someone who is of color have an advantage over a white student if they’re both at the same poverty level and went to a mediocre school? The minority students are poor argument fails when you acknowledge white people are poor too, and not all minority students suffer economically.

Only an ignoramus would assert that only whites and asians value an education! If that’s true, and it is most certainly not, then minorities wouldn’t want to attend college and wouldn’t want to pursue legitimate careers! So obviously I agree with comiclover and totally disagree with birthofthecool!

do you think that i stole post #65? think again

“So obviously I agree with comiclover and totally disagree with birthofthecool!”

:D

Yay!

if the education system is so bad in america
why don’t you just go back to your country.

Well, if you are african american, chances are you don’t know ‘your country’. =/

you should know the country you’re from if you know your own heritage.

you should know your country if your ancestors were brought here on a slave ship and sold as property /sarcasm

God why do people always have to bring up slavery. I don’t go around bringing up the Holocaust to Germans or complain to the British about the way they treat the Irish.

Because it is next to impossible to know where you are from in Africa if your great great great grandparents were slaves. Whereas most people who say they are German American know the country, obviously.

We’re commenting on your comment about going back to your own country. You can’t say that to someone who’s African American unless you want an argument.

I’m going to pretend filmeister is being facetious, because that is crazy offensive. :D

I agree that purely racial affirmative action is outdated and should be replaced with economic affirmative action. Universities seem to be resistant to the concept since it would cost them more money in financial aid to admit so many poor students. However, no spots are “held” for any race since the quota system was abolished through (I think) U of California v. Bakke Supreme Court case.

filmeister is a ■■■■■.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

sorry I didn’t read the whole thread but I did read the first three posts and that was all it took for me to know that the OP is a bitter idiot and this thread is totally useless.

HAHAHA!

poor legal_immi. what a jilted soul.

from his past threads, it appears that EVERYONE seems to have an issue with him…

My response:
I do believe that people of working class or working poor status also have disadvantages as well. This is why I am also for AA that has more of a holistic approach and looks at a number of factors and not just race alone when helping disadvantaged students get into college. But I will point out that there is still a difference between a poor white person and a poor person of color (particularly black). The difference is, along with dealing with problems faced by not having enough money and resources, the person of color has to deal with the prejudice and institutionalized discrimination that still exists in this country based on the color of one’s skin. No one knows that poor white person is poor, disadvantaged at school, and etc. until they are told. When one is black many times it is assumed- even if it is not the case. To ignore that racism and discrimination still exist and can still affect the opportunities presented to a person of color is to turn a blind eye to the obvious in my opinion.

The OP’s logic is atrocious at best.

jenx1234, the reason that everyone has an issue with legal_immi aka pmvd is because he’s ALWAYS creating threads about AA or how he’s treated badly because he’s a URM or some other thread with the sole purpose of stirring up an argument or getting people to pity him. It’s getting really old. No matter how much advice people give him to just FORGET WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK or to seek counselling, he ignores it and creates more and more of these ridiculous threads.
