Before kids, I tucked my tops in all the time, had my first at almost 34. I had a very flat tummy. Now, like most of us, I have a little pooch. I love the look of tucked in tops on me, with jeans…until I look at myself from the side. It’s not horrible, but I keep envisioning what I used to look like. I like the half tuck only when I wear a jacket or blazer. I think it looks good from the front, but not particularly from the side. So, jackets hide that.
I love the look of a crisp shite shirt tucked on, I’ve never worn that. Anyway, does your swell cause you from tucking in tops?
I’m on the lookout for tops since many of mine were ruined from the cleaners. Macy’s has their Labor Day sale going on.
I’m a fan of the half-tuck which my kids have worn for many years. They rarely fully rigidly tuck In shirts. Even when tucked all around it’s pulled out a tad in most cases. And the half tuck has now been popularized by Tan France of Queer Eye for all ( he calls it a ‘French tuck’). I think that once your eye adjusts to the look it’s fine from the sides and looks even better if you buy shirts that aren’t overly long. However I will say that I did no tucking whatsoever until I lost weight (70 pounds in the last year). However I still don’t have the very flat stomach I did when I was younger and do think the half tuck is a more flattering look.
It depends on the top and the jeans. I think mid rise jeans look best on me with a French tuck. Higher rise, then too much of a pooch. I rarely full tuck unless I’m wearing a blazer.
I don’t. I’m thin, but have a protruding stomach. When low rise pants became fashionable, I had to make my own fashion, because low rise emphasize my stomach. For more than a decade, I’ve only been wearing untucked tops or tunics. Boring but necessary.
I occasionally tuck my shirts in and try to half tuck them. Always feels a bit weird but I try.
I try not to look at myself from the side and dwell on what used to be. For 57, I look great! And am way more comfortable in this skin.
If I were to buy a a white shirt, this is what would tempt me https://www.jcrew.com/p/womens_category/shirts_tops/bodysuits/stretch-perfect-bodysuit/G5878?color_name=white. Looks like a nice white shirt but is a bodysuit so it won’t untuck. But honestly, I look terrible in a shirt like this. I try and never wear them. I don’t know what it is, I think it’s that I have short hair and feel “manly” but I think most women look great, just not me.
I have never tucked in my shirts. I am short (just over 5 feet) and to compound it I am short-waisted for my height. Even at my skinniest (and I was a skinny kid/teen), I looked ridiculous with a shirt tucked in. Imagine a female Ed Grimley character (Martin Short on SNL). The first wave of bodysuits in fashion (70s) was a disaster for me.
I occasionally do the half tuck, but for the most part I wear shirts untucked. Like many women my age I have put on a few pounds after being thin most of my life and a lot the weight has settled around my stomach area.
Almost never full tuck due to tummy. Have tried the half tuck, as some shirts are just too long untucked. But often ends up coming untucked partially or fully,
I used to always tuck, but I leave untucked now more than tucked. I am in good shape, but if any middle-blobs show up when I tuck in a shirt, out it goes. I lean toward more forgiving fits when I buy shirts now, because I do like to tuck. Ah, the wonders of aging.
@ProfessorPlum168 - we have Untuckit in the upscale mall near where I live. When you go there to shop they ask you if you would like a glass of whiskey!
@showmom858 haha they have one at the Stanford Shopping Center now and, no whiskey offerings, but the guy kept offering me shirts that was 20 lbs too small for me lol.
@garland Even though I was very thin as a teen and young adult I was bottom heavy and envied those with smaller hips and lean legs. I had a very flat stomach but wished my weight was more evenly distributed and though I tucked stuff in if my pants were slim fitting I felt like you did . My mother always said this was a grass is always greener thing. Then I had kids and got pretty heavy. This year I lost 70 pounds and something I didn’t even know could happen, happened. My weight shifted so I now have slim hips and thighs and slender legs. My stomach is definitely not flat. I much prefer this body type. I feel like there are a lot more clothing options that are flattering. ( shorts, dresses, skirts, super skinny jeans). I can half tuck if done right. The grass didn’t just seem greener. It was greener.
Cute shirt, @deb922 . I was at our high end mall today and saw that on a mannequin in the window. Found 2 items on sale identical to my ruined items. Grabbed them, as I had really liked them. Made me happy. One was actually a more fall color than the one I bought in the spring, so I can wear it as a transitional piece. I loved how it laid and the length.
