Oh, yes I sure think he’s an Aspie. I like how he’s made those very focused qualities work for him.

spoiler…

Didn’t another Dr. try to get him involved in an evaluation for Asperger Syndrome?
I forget which episode it was, because once I started watching earlier this year- I watched all of the available episodes on Hulu.

spoiler…

His old GF doc tried to get to go for therapy, first to deal with the blood issue then to deal with his emotional side, not sure it was specific for Asperger’s.

OTOH - he had a crappy upbringing. so possibly he lack of people skills is due to the lack of nurturing rather than Asperger’s

I think it was in season 2 that a psychiatrist wanted to include Doc in a paper re: Aspergers.

that’s right, I forgot about that.

H likes it- Netflix…

What’s the relationship between the show House and Doc Martin? Which came first ? The photography with open windows ,flowers, scenic settings is intoxicating!
The characters wonderfully quirky. Did anyone notice the background signs —furnished rooms for rent…Bed and Breakfast?
Wonder if tourism has increased due to this show?

My husband and I love this show, too. He pointed out that it reminded him very much of Northern Exposure. Cranky big city doc “exiled” to small town, where he proceeds to alienate all the “natives”. Quirky, but ultimately competent, office receptionists. There must be other similarities I’m missing. Anyone?
I grew tired of Northern Exposure as the series neared its demise, but I can’t see that happening with Doc Martin.

orangeone - I saw similarities between Northern Exposure and Doc Martin too. I don’t watch much tv but faithfully watched NE when it was on.

Big Fan of Northern Exposure back in the day, but it didnt’ last too long.
I see many similarities between House and Doc Martin, even some story lines.

Regarding tourism, looks like promotion to various sites depicted in TV and movies will be emphasized during upcoming Olympics.

I really notice the placement of Hotels, Band B, restaurants in Doc Martin! The views are astounding in almost every shot.

insights.org.uk;

" VisitBritain and many UK destinations have harnessed this effect over the years with successful marketing campaigns around blockbuster movies like The Da Vinci Code, several James Bond films, Miss Potter, Harry Potter, Brideshead Revisted, and TV programmes like Heartbeat, Inspector Morse and Doc Martin.

This article argues that one of the most powerful TV tourism opportunities of recent times is the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

looks like the residents of Port Isaac not very happy with tourism influx
[Martin Clunes television show Doc Martin causes village uproar - Telegraph](<a href=“Martin Clunes television show Doc Martin causes village uproar”>Martin Clunes television show Doc Martin causes village uproar)

I can understand their frustration. We had been vacationing in the same area ( rural mountain village in Washington state) for years that started to become very popular with those who had made money in computers and started building vacation homes. Changed the area for residents and people like us who couldn’t afford a summer home & preferred to stay in smaller places.

It’s funny when people converge on an area citing its rusticity, but then try and make it like what they are trying to get away from!

But I do like the show & I liked Northern Exposure as well ( although Roslyn didn’t have quite the problem with tourists).

Finished seasons 1-4 on Netflix- so happy I discovered this show now, and didn’t have to wait 2 years between seasons!

Now, CCers where do I watch the highly anticipated Season 5 shows? which network?

I figure it has to be on cable of some sort SJCM, the way that the disclaimer appears of " mature audiences" in the opener. ( is XFINITY a station?)

Oh no! one of my favorite characters won’t be returning!
[Stephanie Cole Reveals Why She Left Doc Martin](http://tvovermind.zap2it.com/cable/itv/doc-martin-itv/stephanie-cole-reveals-left-doc-martin/87301)

Yes, saw that she was “leaving”- in fact, if you google you tube, doc martin, there are many interviews, clips of tourists filming Season 5 episodes being shot in Port Isaac.
Apparently, another renown actress,Dame Eileen Atkins, is replacing Auntie Joan. One of my favorite characters along with the receptionist Paul-ine.

More spoilers if you’re like me and want to know what’s next now

Every other house in Cornwall was already a B&B long before Doc Martin. Americans go to Hawaii, Brits go to Cornwall. It is the sea and surfing mecca of the UK. Though I do think this show will have increased foreign tourism. I once made the mistake of driving from London to Cornwall on a holiday weekend. It took 10 hours! (only about 250 miles)

You are right Cupcake, just listened to interview, and people as far away as Australia are traveling to Port Isaac, Cornwall because of the show. Just read a blog from Michigan and their goregous photos of the area.

Did you make it to little ole’ Port Isaac ??? 10 hour drive- not for day trippers.

Atkins was propositioned by Colin Farrell on location in 2004, shortly before she turned 70; she said the incident helped her pass that milestone far more easily than she otherwise would have expected

Great story.

It’s not 10 hours normally, just when it is busy. Brits love their caravans (US=trailers, mobile homes) and you end up on a small, hilly road behind small cars pulling large caravans, very slowly!

I’ve never been to Port Isaac, but I don’t think it’s all that unique. I stayed in a place called Looe for a week. A lot of the South-West of England looks quite similar. You might also like some of the islands like Guernsey and Jersey. I’ve always wanted to go to the Scily Islands too, but never got round to it. I would avoid Newquay. This is like the Cancun of the UK. Where young people go to party (and possibly for other less legal activities as well).
