Does any one know how many National Merit full ride scholarships are given at Baylor university for entering freshman?

We are planning to chose Baylor as our first choice for my DD who plans to pursue her BSMD at Baylor. But we are not sure if she has a chance to get the full ride for the BS portion of BSMD at Baylor. Not sure how competitive it is as lot of NMSF and NMF apply there and Baylor may have to limit the full ride scholorships they give out to a select few. She is NMSF now as announced today (226 index score, way above 221 cut off for CA) and has all As in her transcripts, 1600 SAT score and more than decent ECs.

I would call admissions and ask. There are only 6 BSMD slots, and there is also a separate scholarship and application for bsmd students so I’m not sure they would stack NMF $ too (AFAIK NMF is full tuition, not a full ride.)

I spoke to the fin aid office and UG admission officer. Here is the summary:
Baylor has discontinued full tuition waiver for NMS recipients. All they get is $5000.
if you are good enough to be one of those 6 BSMD students, the 2 of them will get $10K scholorship per yer; the remaining 4 will get $3K per year; Getterman scholarship is a full ride but there are only 3 or 4 given out every year.
This is disappointing news for me. i make enough that i dont quality for finaid but not enough to either afford that $80k per year price for 4 or 8 years. For me, no school is worth it spend that much money for any degree

Too bad…they are joining many other schools that have sadly cut back on NMF $.

Big picture, all BSMD/DO programs are reaches and many schools don’t give much merit aid for those programs (because they don’t need to.) @momsearcheng any additional insights?

You are smart to consider undergrad costs if med school could be in the future…it’s a long and expensive road.

Congratulations to your D on being NMSF and good luck with admissions.

That’s disappointing, but it won’t be a problem for your daughter. If she did well on the SAT, she will do well on the MCAT. If she was a strong student in high school, there is no reason she can’t be a strong student in college as well.

Actually, no longer having Baylor as a “sure thing” for a full scholarship allows her to look beyond Baylor and really consider what schools fit her best. For example, U Tulsa is a small private university that really invests in its National Merit students. It gives a full ride for all NMFs, and over 1/4 of its incoming class is National Merit, so your daughter would have lots of similar high achieving peers. University of Alabama has a well regarded pre-med honors program and is also a full ride. UT-Dallas has great pre-med prep and has a nerdy techy vibe. A good friend of my son’s is there on the National Merit package and having a great experience. Gustavus Adolphus is a cozy liberal arts college that gives full tuition for National Merit. A number of my medical school classmates went there for undergrad and were very well prepared. It is located in a small Minnesota town with a clinic run by the famed Mayo Clinic for volunteering and shadowing.

So many options–your daughter will do great! Congrats!

And this is why many people do not go for BSMD. They simply can’t pay for BS and MD portions. Most BSMD programs are extremely competitive and extremely expensive.

My daughter applied for the BSMD at Baylor [B2B](class of 2024) and only got to the first round of interview. It is very competitive and all the candidates are essentially with “stellar credentials”. “What sets your student apart is what they look for to join the program”. Eight is the standard number of students selected. Baylor DOES NOT participate in the NMF program but they do offer merit scholarships. The only full-ride scholarship is the Getterman Scholars Program. My daughter applied but did not get it. Only 3 were selected. She was offered a competitive package but we would still need to contribute $30K a year (the total cost was $81K). Her heart was set on Baylor. She got in at Texas Tech UMSI Program and it is a full-ride. So she is in Lubbock now and enjoying it thus far. Hope this helps and congrats to your daughter. Good luck to her.

Most students who get into BSMD have exceptional academic credentials and hence quality for some merit aid through the school which brings the cost of attendance to somewhat bearable. Anywhere from $10k per year to OOS tuition waiver to full tuition waiver for the BS portion is not unheard of for these students. It is less likely that they pay the sticker price for the BS portion of the BSMD. There is no rarely any waiver for MD portion anyway in the US (except some programs for need based aid, and few schools that offer free tuition for MD such as NYU, John Hopkins)

Can you name some of the undergrad schools that give merit to BSMD/DO students?

Become an athlete at Baylor and get a $25k stipend.

Congratulations! good for her. TT program is a decent one. Looks like you are in-state.
Baylor is missing out on good students for sure.
