Does everyone have their popcorn ready for Harry & Meghan?

The explanation, weak as it is, is it was due to unavailability of poppies in the US.

This goes without saying but I wonder how Harry got his?

He received it when in Toronto on 11/7 attending the True Patriot Love Foundation National Tribute Dinner, which is a fundraiser for veterans, military members, and their families

Harry just doesn’t think. If they know the optics are bad, just don’t go out that night. Stay in. Or do something to honor the way he would have at him.

To clout-chase or not to clout-chase, that seems to be the existential question for M&H’s brand.

I can see how they might want to have it both ways - portraying themselves as simple country folk who love their chickens while also donning high fashion to rub elbows with Anna Wintour at the Balenciaga show.

That’s a pretty advanced celebrity maneuver and even Gwyneth Paltrow can’t manage to pull it off…

It’s easy to buy poppies on Amazon or Etsy so the lack of availability in the US doesn’t pass the smell test for me. However, they were going to be criticized either way - either for not wearing one or for wearing it to a Kardashian birthday party.

More to the point, this isn’t the first Remembrance Day for Meghan. Most people were ceramic poppy pins and jewelry boxes generally have last year’s. Much like many American jewelry boxes have a flag pin.

As I posted above, that was the case

And once again a good example of the Streisand effect. If they hadn’t made a fuss about having the photos deleted, nobody would be talking about this at all. Now they’ve pissed off the Kardashians and specifically Kris Jenner, and that’s probably not a great move. Kardashians are a more important royal family that the Windsor Mountbatten Sussexes in Hollywood :joy:

Has anyone watched With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration? I have not, nor do I plan to, but the reviews have been scathing.

I have not watched but have been seeing the reviews (“She tries to fool the viewer into thinking “H” just happens to walk by the kitchen with his cup of coffee, acting surprised to see her there, to pop in for an on-camera chat - forgetting that the kitchen where she tapes this show is not even in her actual house.”)

Also scathing are the reviews of her Harper’s Bazar photo shoot, where in one shot, she appears to copy a similar pose of Diana.

For whatever reasons, she is just not well-liked. I doubt anything she could do at this point would receive favorable reviews. Time to put the camera away and focus on life with H and the kids.

ICYMI, Harry on Colbert last night

Thomas Markle hospitalized. The guy’s a piece of work, but I still wish him a smooth recovery.

According to one British rag, he’s had his leg amputated

It occurred to me the other day when I was in a discussion where the topic of professional athletes transitioning into sports broadcasting and podcasting came up that it really seems to me Harry missed a huge opportunity to become a royal commentator. I don’t know that there is a path back toward that for him but I know that I would have loved to be listening to him point out and explain the little details of the Abbey and the choirs and the who’s who that we will see for the Together at Christmas when its broadcast. And it would have been lovely for the state dinners this year to hear the history from him that I had to read about with regard to the tiara Catherine wore, etc.

Do you think he knows this stuff? I really doubt it.

Oh absolutely not…but he could have looked it up like we all did and I think that I would have tuned in to hear it from him! I don’t really see that ever being possible anymore though, but I do think had there not been such negative whining and dining on the royal family this would have been a role I’d like to have seen him in.

In case anyone is interested in the background of that tiara:

I have a recollection that in the early days of their engagement (when the American press was still very, very enchanted with M), there were efforts made to align the two of them with a U.S. broadcast network precisely for this type of guest commentating role. My assumption is that M&H and Kensington Palace had too many demands/restrictions to make it viable.

But, for a brief moment it seemed like M&H could be a bridge between the two cultures and that H could potentially demistify and humanize/modernize the royal family for American consumers (er, audiences?).

Definitely a missed opportunity, especially as it seems that Kate and William are reverting back to a more opaque posture.

I think I would disagree here, to me it seems William and Catherine have made noticeable and sufficient progress in demystifying and modernizing the monarchy with their social media interactions and the attention they cultivate their for patronages and work. The missed opportunity I find is on the part of the American media to capitalize on providing their consumers with a relatable commentator in Harry whose lived it (and who most Americans with an interest in the BRF would recognize - same idea as professional athletes turned sports commentators) and of course also on H&M for burning the bridges that would have allowed that to be a trustworthy and prosperous endeavor.

Last I checked, Kate and William and/or William and Harry aren’t obligated to make themselves or the BRF act in a way that is acceptable to American consumers.

Nor do I think that William needs to pull back the curtain to show everyone his part in getting the child molester kicked out of the BRF, although allegedly he played a huge part in it.

Of course they’re not “obligated”, nor does anyone “need” to do anything to satisfy American consumers. (Personally as an American TV consumer I’d prefer to see a lot less servicing of American consumers habits :joy:)

But there was a moment when it looked like M&H would form a fabulous foursome with William and Kate, and they’d all be clever and modern and self-aware and classy and transformative all together. I don’t remember how long that moment lasted but it was pretty brief IIRC.
