Because her driver drove recklessly, and was drunk. The point is, it did not need to have been life-threatening. Had Diana’s entourage driven responsibly, the press would have obtained their pictures but she would be alive.

Yes. Don’t drive over a cliff ( or into a pylon) because you are being followed by cameramen. Their cameras will not kill you; the pylon might.

This is a breaking story. We are not privy to all the information. Cars, guns, knives, bombs…we live in America where all of this is a potential threat. Sadly.

Accountability for what? Seriously? They followed a car, just like they do for other celebrities. If they were speeding or driving recklessly, they might get a ticket from NYPD. I will wait to hear whether anyone was so ticketed.
H&M have agency over this-they can choose to drive ( or be driven) responsibly, or be goaded into dangerous acts to avoid a picture. Surely it occurred to them that after appearing at a NY gala they would be followed; most high wealth celebrities take measures to mitigate this.
The Secret Service, and other reputable security services, spend a lot of time distinguishing between actual life threatening situations and how to respond, versus those that are actually not and thus merit a more measured response. Many high net worth people hire ex-secret service for that reason.

No accident. The police should cite those on scooters and bikes using sidewalks if that is prohibited. If cars were tailgating, that would seem to be citation-worthy as well by NYPD.
Had the NYPD felt the situation was actually dangerous, the protocol would be to call for backup. I will await further info, but there is no report they did so.

My friends who live in NY say criminals are emboldened because crime is not prosecuted. I am sure the paparazzi felt like they could do whatever they wanted and get away with it.
Unlike Diana’s situation, they were accompanied by actual LEOs with the authority to arrest someone if crines occur in their presence. Pretty sure the LEOs don’t want a celebrity death on their watch. If the LEOs made no arrests and didnt request backup, they perceived the situation far differently than the HM press release.
I am certain minor crimes are ignored in NYC. High profile VIP deaths are not

Why? As previously stated paparazzi have cameras. They wanted pictures to sell. And not salacious pics of topless bathing in The Mediterranean, but H&M dressed up after attending a gala.

It appears that the LEOs engaged in evasive maneuvers. And they back up the account of the incident. It was not good.

LEOs only supported part of the HM press release. The Mayor stated the incident was " a bit reckless and irresponsible", that he had a hard time believing the incident took 2 hours, and that speeding should be avoided but did not state by whom or whether tickets were issued. Beware of CNN headlines based on celebrity press releases. The Times has a more balanced account.
I expect the next step is the internal inquiry by NYPD as to whether their officers acted correctly, and there is likely car/body cam video to address that point.

I hope that the driver was sober and responsible. And that everyone was wearing their seat belts during this unfortunate incident.
Whenever I’ve been in NYC, I can’t imagine any sort of car chase. So much traffic.

A bit hysterical. They might have been photographed against their will.
The catastrophic potential of the situation was completely under the control of the Sussexes and their security escort. As pointed out the police could have stopped and arrested the paparazzi for reckless driving, endangerment and the like. Instead they did the opposite…AND someone told the press about it.
Also hard to imagine an actual car chase in NYC🤔. Unless the escort was somehow clearing a path.
