… as a parent? I’m guessing the answer depends on if you are raising boys or girls. My sons listen to some stuff when they are working out and honestly, I am not sure if I should get mad or laugh.
And the girls seems to like it just as much so who I am too say anything?
I mean, the lyrics can be quite catchy depending on what type of rap. Like I used to not listen to rap because I thought it would make you stupid (lol) but I started listening to it around 11th grade and although I find some types repulsive and really dumb, other types are quite awesome. Also there are the classic raps anyone would like (i.e. Rapper’s Delight).
Do I hate when I see the occasional 8th or 9th grader rapping to a song that has profanity they don’t even understand? Yes I do lol. But if someone’s just listening to it and not announcing the lyrics to the world it’s cool. To each their own.
Rap music lyrics bother my mom. She doesn’t like vulgar or violent lyrics which rap tends to have. If she’s in the car, I won’t play it, but when she’s not I’ll listen to whatever music I’m fancying for at the time.
As a woman, rap music can be violent, but it doesn’t bother me depending on the type of rap music. Take “Fight Night” by Migos. Some might be up in arms saying, “Oh, no, he’s sexually violent towards women,” but I don’t view it in a literal way. He’s just saying he’s going to d— her down.
Rap and Hip Hop has some catchy songs and if you listen to certain lyrics they’re comical. Like Daeric said some are repulsive and dumb, but others are awesome. Their are artists who have a great way at moving words around with the beat. It’s music I’ll listen to whenever.
As a parent I don’t love it but I just tune out what I don’t like. I remember my parents hating some of the lyrics from my music in high school but for the most part the meanings usually didn’t register with me. Our youngest is really the only one who listens to rap and I think he is the same - I don’t think he really even pays much attention to the words.
When he was in HS and I always had a carload of boys I was hauling to soccer, he used to play rap in the car. I told him I didn’t care but if I heard the “f” word I got to flick him in the head ( this is a kid who was never spanked in his life so hopefully nobody starts talking abuse here). He thought it was funny, and his friends were entertained whenever I flicked him, but he sure turned it off fast if that word slipped through.
I saw a Vine the other day about what people my age will look like 50 years from now trying to do the dances that we do now. Hilarious. “Now watch me whip…now grab the Bengay.”
Not sure when I’ll ever share some of the music that I listen now with my kids. Ha!
lol, well Im a parent with a recent college grad, one in college, and a hs senior, and YES I listen to rap.J Cole and Kendrick Lamar are two of my faves. I grew up on rap and hip hop. Now I do miss some of the conscious rap such as Public Enemy, etc, but some of todays ratchet music I have to admit is in my playlist. Sometimes my husband and I laugh, because we have 4 degrees between us, and we think, we cant believe we are listening to this"
I dont generally listen to hip hop or rap, although if Macklemore, Common Market, or Blue Scholars are in town I might go see them.
Violent lyrics arent xclusive to rap. http://youtu.be/_oLzX0RPquk
H really likes Pigeonhed but he has to be drug to see Shawn by himself.
Ahh, I can see why you like J. Cole and Kendrick, then.
I must admit I am embarrassed by certain songs come on my playlist when I’m at a stoplight and the car over has their windows down, too. I can only imagine what kind of person they think I am, but then I remember I don’t know they, they don’t know me, and probably never will.
I’m partially deaf, so often don’t catch the lyrics of the rap D listens to. Sometimes I’ll catch a phrase and say, WHAT did he/she just say??" and D will change the station. But I admit that much of it is very catchy. I grew up in the days of rock, when people yammered about Ozzie making kids kill themselves or the Beatles making kids take LSD. Lyrics don’t really make anyone do anything, and if a kid is raised right, they can listen to whatever they like and remain a good person. D’s other favorite choice is gospel songs. I’m not worried about the rap.
And rap is so romantic. “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap is a ballad.
“And I get high with my baby
I just left the mall, I’m getting fly with my baby, yeah
And I can ride with my baby
I be in the kitchen cooking pies with my baby, yeah”
Forget all that nonsense about multiple chicks in the club. Fetty is 100. He’ll cook pies with you. Pies.
Lots of time, I find rap to be funny (some of the noises I’ve heard? Priceless). My brother almost exclusively listens to rap, and he drives me around often when I’m back home, so I’m accustomed to hearing it. Doesn’t really bother me, but not my cup of tea.
Sometimes, I’ll hear a really good rap song, those are the exceptions for me.

If it isnt appropriate, it wouldnt be appropriate for either sex.
And I disagree with " oh, but they like it, so I am not going to say anything".
What age did you start that?
15? 10? 5?
A parents job is to start a dialogue.
I hate it all, don’t consider it “music” (I know, we could debate that forever), and don’t listen to any of it—neither do my kids, which I like to think is a triumph of my parenting, but is no doubt just dumb luck.
