I keep on hearing things like “UC’s prepare you for grad school, not the job force”, " CSU’s are better for getting a job than a UC" and other such things. Is this true? I haven’t decided yet if I want to get a masters or not. I want to go into the engineering field probably civ or mech. Would I be better off going to say cal poly or san diego state or another csu?

How long does it take to get a masters in engineering btw?

What does the word “prepare” mean? Does that mean that you will get the job of your choice? If so, consider two students with similar statistics, with the only major difference being that one went to a UC and one went to a CSU. With the exception of Cal Poly SLO, the student who went to the UC is more likely to get the job.

I would say both schools prepare you but It’s up to you to take action. They both offer great academia, career services, and organizations and clubs. It’s up to you to take advantage of its resources.

But in my opinion, I feel that UCD does offered more probably due to funding and the competitive nature of the students. But don’t get me wrong, SLO and SDSU is probably the only CSU’s that have done a good job.

UC’s tend to have TA’s teach you instead of actual professors. UCSB is the only exception because the grad student population isn’t overwhelming.

He talked about cal poly in the opening to this thread genius… LOLZ!!!

“CSU’s are better for getting a job than a UC” and other such things. Is this true? I haven’t decided yet if I want to get a masters or not. I want to go into the engineering field probably civ or mech. Would I be better off going to say cal poly or san diego state or another csu?"

Oop: you’re wrong, I don’t know what UC you go to, but my professors are very engaged with their students, and I almost never ask my TA for help-- my professor teaches the material, and I go to him for clarification. I usually only talk to a TA if they messed up grading.

I confirm with fooshy, all my classes are taught by professors unless its a discussion.

I can say I’ve seen a lot of recruiters at UCD for engineering. I’m sure SLO’s is strong too. But understand that to get a job, you must maintain a high gpa. Choose the program that best fits you, I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice.

UCD definitely helps to prepare students for jobs. The Internship and Career Center is very active all over campus. They have a lot of workshops, internship placements, and a website that lists hundreds of internships just for students. It really depends on YOU the student. Some students go to college to pursue research. There are programs available for them. Others go to get jobs, and similarly, there are resources to help them. If you are pro-active, you will be highly successful. I also know that at UC Davis they have year-round on campus recruiting from a lot of great companies. These companies hold internships directly on the UCD campus, and they often hold workshops on campus and information sessions. It seems like UC Davis is a popular recruiting spot.

Cal Poly SLO is wayyyyyy better than UCD and San Diego State for any type of engineering. San Diego State shouldn’t be compared to UCD or Cal Poly SLO in my opinion.

Cal Poly will cost around 15k a year.

UC Davis will cost around 22-25k per year.

Cal Poly’s engineering dept is far more distinguished than UCD.

After 4 years at Davis your expenses would be around 100k

After 4 years at Poly your expenses would be around 60k

Thats 40k you could save by going to the better school.

Hold on, Oop, so you made this comment: “UC’s tend to have TA’s teach you instead of actual professors.” And you don’t even attend a UC? How is anything you say credible?!

I disagree-- UC Davis is an excellent engineering school with great programs (especially in Computer Science, just look at our faculty).

Besides, aren’t you the guy who wanted to go to UCD, but then realized what applying “early decision” to Cal Poly SLO meant? ::sigh:: This guy is still in denial…

P.S. I got accepted in to Cal Poly’s Computer Science program, and chose to go to Davis regardless. Not only to they have an excellent CS program, you can also couple your CS degree with a top-notch Biological Sciences program, an opportunity you wouldn’t get at SLO.

EDIT: Note that Cal Poly, SLO and UC Davis aren’t even judged on the same level since SLO doesn’t offer doctorates. In fact, SLO isn’t even judged on the same level as any major engineering school. Because of the fact that UCD offers doctorates in their engineering program, you get more qualified TAs, more research opportunities with post-docs, and more opportunities to discuss engineering with people who make it their life’s work. SLO is ranked with schools like Cal Poly Pomona and other CSUs, so I don’t even know how you can objectively say that SLO is definitively “better.” Besides, you don’t even go there. http://polycentric.csupomona.edu/campus_news/usnews_engineering14th.pdf

EDIT 2: Where the hell did you get the 22-25K vs 15K figure? I live off of 16K per school year, without scholarships or financial aid. Now you’re just starting to annoy me because you don’t even list anything factual. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Well you made the wrong decision fooshy. You passed up a better school to go to a mid tier UC in the middle of nowhere. Have fun with cows and sacremento for the next 4-5 years. LOLZ. As I said before, I would rather go to Cal Poly SLO than UCDavis. UCSB is the only UC I would have a tough time passing up.

ppl actually flourish in this enviornment. u cant smell the cows. they can be quite fun and amusing, especially when ppl come visit u. i feel safe and comfortable in davis, which is really the most important thing. a uc is a uc is a uc. i wanted to go to ucd over all the others, top tier and all csu’s included. and of course ucd prepares you for a job. its college. u get a degree. u get a job. lol. fooshy didnt make the wrong decision lol. he made his OWN decision. ucsb<ucd. total. party. school.

No Oop, you made the wrong decision.
Your last post is the equivalent of this: “My school is better and yours smells.” Clearly you’re correct and no one can beat that logic.

Those sources you linked sure are unbeatable. Oh wait, you didn’t list any sources. Oh, and you’re wrong, too. I’m done posting here. Seems to me you’re upset you didn’t attend Davis, though, and you’re trying to convince yourself you’re better off, even though you’re not.
