Does UCD prepare you for a job?

If I’m willing to make effort to get one, is it common to get a co-op, internship or lab research opps in biology (broad area I know) at UCD rather than at a private school like WPI?

I can tell you that there are LOTS of bio-sci research positions posted on the job listings board (jobs.ucdavis.edu). I would say it’s common.

To simplify things, this is how it’s usually thought of:

UCs teach you more about the fundamentals, preparing you to be a more adaptive worker upon graduation.

CSUs teach you up-to-date information that is very practical, but you may or may not be able to keep pace if the methods/technology you use changes significantly. Meanwhile UC students, understanding fundamentals, would likely adapt more quickly.

oop is funny :)

i got in …yayayyaya

Honestly its actually up to you. Its what you make out of your college experience that helps you prepare for a job. Can’t really put everything on college. You need to take initiatives if you want to do well in the future.

I got into UC Davis, but it is garbage compared to Cal Poly SLO… Davis leaves their graduates out to die, while Cal Poly litterally hands their students internships and jobs during and right after college…

Also you have to look at where you will be living for the next 4-5 years…

Davis’ weather is either extremely hot or extremely cold… Also it smells like cow and horse ****… What is there to do in Davis? Nothing.

Really think about your decision… Look at Cal Poly, UCSB, and UCSD over Davis

^^^ Davis hater.

College is suppose to educate and train you, not spoon feed you jobs. If you have hands, make them useful and go apply for your dream job.

Oop - why did you waste $60 and apply to Davis if it’s such a lousy place? It’s hardly a ‘safety’ for you …

You’re right, UCs do not do that, and that’s because they focus on something entirely different than CSUs.

CSUs teach you real-world practical knowledge, which as you pointed out, mainly revolves around what to do for a career. As such, they actively search out internships and jobs for you to complete your education.

UCs, on the other hand, are entirely different. UCs focus on education to expand knowledge moreso than the real-world applications of it. Because of this, they’re more concerned with giving you more of a depth and breadth of knowledge than your future career itself. Also, [and forgive me for this next part, those of you who do not agree] UC students generally have more initiative, and actively search out their own opportunities. UCs recognize this, and so they do try to help you because it’d be a wasted effort on their part, since their students are likely to find the same opportunities on their own.

This is just my opinion, and in no way is fact, so feel free to disagree with me.

Oop, you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Everything you write is nonsense.

In reality, everything depends on the student. I’d say all UCD, UCSB, UCSD, Cal Poly - are all similar in future job opportunities. Some kids graduating will be making 50k+ a year, other kids will be wondering why they’re still waiting tables. If you work hard, get a good gpa, make friends and get involved, do multiple internships, do research, understand WHAT you want to do and HOW to get there, then you can get there. The opportunities at all the 4 above listed schools are the same; choose depending on what type of location/surrounding you like.
