We lost our dog in January. It’s the first time in 25 years we’ve been dogless. I’ve had dreams of my “retirement dog” for years, but now I’m focusing on how clean my house is and how easily we can travel to resist heading to the shelter. I’ve even taken all of the rescue sites off of my FB feed.
Tinkerbell, a 35 lb mostly chihuahua tripod from Mexico (with Fluff the cat), and
Cinnamon, a 50 lb mostly heeler from Tennessee
Journal entry, April 17, 2012, after we rescued “Gus”…
Doggie and his new home, a journal:
Day 26…I don’t know why she’s laughing her ass off. So what, I was playing ball inside by myself, having a great time and thought I’d take the game outside. So? Can I help it if I didn’t see the screen door was closed and that I ran right into it? Sheesh, it’s not like they have that thing closed all the time. At least I still have my dignity. I acted like I’d meant to do it, and quietly took my ball outside and sat in the shade. I’m almost over being dizzy.
Oh man…is she STILL laughing? At least the guy isn’t here to laugh too. Maybe she’ll forget to tell him. (A dog can wish can’t he?)
tough day, offering emotional support to my D who had to put down her 4-year old pup yesterday. (my walking buddy)
Oh no… I’m so sorry.
I’m sorry. That’s so hard. Hugs to both of you.
So sorry! That is so young!
So sorry! My DD lost her 4 year old dog last year (my DD was 8 months pregnant at the time and her very sweet dog died fairly suddenly of a brain tumor). Now her baby and new puppy are the same age.
One of my dogs is a real dork also. He’s also a rescue that I thought was part border collie (we’ve had border collies for 33 years). His embark came back saying he was half Aussie plus Great Pyr/coonhound. I’ve been telling everyone for three years that he doesn’t have a drop of bc in him.
Just this week I was watching a tiktok that had a black and white Aussie that looked just like my knucklehead. I knew they existed, but I started thinking, where did that coloring come from? Did some research, and what do you know, border collies were a breed that were used to develop the Aussie breed! But he definitely doesn’t have any bc attributes other than the coloring, lol.
The current Sabadogs - the black one is now almost 12. They are happy to share a bed even though they each have their own!
Can you train a 5 year old dog?
We have 5 year old cockapoo. Super calm and like a doll indoor. Very well behaving. But he gets so anxious when we go for a walk and see another dog. Goes nuts and we don’t know where he gets that kind of energy. Gets crazy seeing trucks and other big vehicles.
Due to this nature, we don’t even go for long walks. He was our first dog and my dream was to walk with him throughout our entire community. That is not reality now.
I hear this is called “leash aggression” and can’t really train him out of that. Any thoughts on how I can handle this situation?
My pup is leash aggressive too. It started after he was attacked by an off leash dog. I worked with our trainer for a while and what worked best for us was anticipating the contact. When I saw another dog coming, I’d cross the street and put my my dog in a “sit”. I carried high reward treats with me, made sure I got his attention, and if he remained in the “sit”, he got a reward. Repetition was key. It also helped to walk with neighbors who had his doggy friends. It was working well until he was attacked again :(.
Now that he’s older and going deaf, he doesn’t notice other dogs as much. I just cross the street and keep walking on our merry way.
Unfamiliar with leash aggression, but am familiar with food aggression.
The good news is that you never eat alone; the bad news is that you never eat alone.
6 year old rescue. Poodle and something shaggy is our best guess. Had some herding issues which got her surrendered but has been great for our family. Extremely sweet and loyal.
RING doorbell is less effective than she is “alerting” us to a delivery😀. Thankfully drivers know her as “enthusiastic” not aggressive.
