I started around same age as you and I used to think the same until it started really messing with me a couple years ago, read my earlier posts in this thread, I ended up quitting pornography because it screwed me up.

Although our legal system has decided 18 is old enough to make this kind of “legal” decision she’s not competent to make a choice like this. That’s the real sad truth here. The porn industry is taking complete advantage of this immature girl. I don’t have a big problem with a more mature person deciding to sell their body for sex, and putting it out there on the internet, but this Knox is a seriously confused person pretending to know exactly what she is doing. She doesn’t.

Nrdsb4, first off please don’t be condescending to me if you want me to take you seriously, because if you aren’t going to take me seriously I’m not going to take you seriously either.

As far as porn goes, yes it’s much more violent and rough than real sex, I’m not that gullible to think that the average married couple or any couple does this on a regular basis or even at all. Whenever I have a crush on someone, I don’t fantasize about spitting on her or spanking her with a whip, my mind doesn’t even go there at all, not that it isn’t fun to watch sometimes when ACTORS and ACTRESSES CONSENT to do it. Porn is like real sex on steroids, the porn companies make it like this because it brings in more money.

Why do I not object to the violence and disrespect towards women I’m seeing? Because it is their choice to do porn, and if I did object to it I would be a hypocrite because I watch porn. Also, have you ever thought that the ex porn stars who speak out against porn are a few of many and they are given a voice by people with political agendas against porn? Most porn stars actually like the experience because they get good money for not a lot of work and get to enjoy the fun parts of life more than other people do because they have more time on their hands.

I think it’s more disrespectful to a woman to condemn her for the choice she made to be in porn. To bully her, to shame her for doing what she wants with her life.

Nrdsb4, honestly it’s a losing battle trying to get through to these young people - they seem to know it all - let them make their mistakes and live in their fantasy world - it’s actually what they’re growing up on . There tends to be little logic or reality in most of their worlds. The means justifies the ends with them. Pornography is extremely degrading to women (and frankly to men as well) and while it is indeed an extremely profitable enterprise - people who watch it excessively are extremely unfulfilled people. All of the research indicates that people who are hooked on porn can’t and don’t have satifying personal and/or sexual relationships with others (hence the overreliance on porn). It’s very sad because now I read that boys as young as 9 are watching porn - their view of women and what they expect women to do with and for them is based on these images. Men LOVE women like this Duke young women who just buy into their desire to please men and “perform” for them. There is not that much money in the world that could justify giving blowjobs to strangers for cash. It’s sad when women think so little of themselves that they literally justify their behavior by saying I “like” sex. With ANYONE? it’s just like a sport? This young 16 year old who claims she’s been watching sex since childhood is very puzzling? Does she have parents? If so, are they also watching this with her? No wonder these counseling centers on college campuses are overflowing with students. There has been a dramatic upsurge in college students with all kinds of serious emotional problems - I see these young college women who are so drawn into this “hookup” culture and think it protrays them as cool , open, liberated and “empowered” the buzz word of the moment. They are profoundly sad and to be pitied. They are depressed, suicidal, on drugs, etc. yet, “empowered”.

@Bay
So because of this one female that exists only on the Internet, men everywhere are going to be incapable of developing relationships with people they see in real life? Porn desensitizes men which will prevent your granddaughters from having a real relationship? lol. I don’t see a logical connection. Think about it; if something as currently pervasive as porn was capable of undermining real relationships, don’t you think people would stop getting married already? I think you’re just one more ignorant person who feels the need to take the moral high ground on ethical dilemmas on the Internet to feel good about yourself or feel important. Being offended or disgusted, unfortunately, does not make you right in a debate.

The same goes for you @Nrdsb4. lol @ you trying to incorporate muh-so-joony into this debate.

It’s difficult to imagine how twisted the brain of Knox must be. I made the mistake of watching one of her “performances” online after reading this thread (sadly google can take you to the darkest corners of the world). She endures a man choking her by putting himself so far down her throat that she has to gag. She does this repeatedly as if trying to desensitize herself to the discomfort. There is a reason humans have a gag reflex, but of course with enough training you can do rather disturbing things. This is how sword swallowers at the circus make a living. This is not normal sex. This is a circus performance without a net (i.e. condoms). If this is something that gives her pleasure she’s crazy. People who get pleasure from inflicting pain on themselves, and risking their lives for $1200 need psychiatric help. I’m sorry but she’s just not normal or healthy. It is very disturbing to see what she will allow another sick human being to do to her body for money. I am sorry to have seen it and contributed to her online “success”.

Decimation, you’re a champion straw man erector.

“one female” - no one has said that one porn actress is responsible for the ill effects of porn

“men everywhere” - no one has said that all men are affected this way

“people would stop getting married” - no one has claimed that pervasive porn would render all people incapable of forming real relationships

“offended or disgusted” - no one has claimed that these feelings win a debate

And you have some problems with word usage. It’s “font of wisdom,” not “fount of wisdom.” And “misogyny” is not a “feminist buzzword.” It’s a word.

And, unfortunately, Knox does not exist only on the internet. She is a real young woman who is making disastrous choices.

The stereo typing that is going on in this thread is so saddening. I have a few friends that work in the industry mostly behind the cameras but a few on, and none of them are on drugs. They are not troubled misguided people! The owner of the company makes a good living and so does everyone that works for him. The finance industry is one of the largest drug consumers in the world should we shut down Wall Street? Sex and drug use are rampant in the entertainment industry, should we never make motion pictures ever again? What if she did ametuer porn with just her and a partner she knew and sold that, would u be against it? Something tells me that none of you are involved in the industry and know very little about it.

The problem is the girl is a walking stereotype. Family problems. Money issues. Low self-esteem. Cutting. Eating disorders. And, a desperate need for approval which she has temporarily found in the porn industry because she sent a photo to some sleazeball who recognized the marketability of Duke porn star hook. Everything that comes out of her mouth sounds like exactly what she is - a naïve young girl who took 6 months of women’s studies courses. By the way, what she is doing is pretty amateur. Next up, is an internet sex competition show. She’s no Jenna Jamison.

The conversation here is really centered on young women who become involved in porn. I’m sure there are plenty of people “behind the camera” who are doing just fine making money off these actors.

You CANNOT be taken seriously if you make generalizations based on a “few” individuals you know which are in direct conflict with the facts of the terrible “side effects” of doing porn which have been documented already. The FACTs are that almost 100% of these actors/actresses become infected with STDS. It’s a fact that many of them become addicted to drugs or alcohol in order to get through these scenes. Many of the women suffer permanent injuries from being involved in “multiples” scenes or are beaten on camera. Depression among them is high, etc., etc., etc. Porn “stars” are actually in the minority in the profession. Most do not have the power leverage to refuse to do the dangerous and debasing things they are required to do in order to make a living.

It’s disgusting that these companies are not required to protect their employees like any other industry is. But they refuse.

No one ever said the porn industry should be shut down. We are saying that we are horrified that a young woman would feel that she has “no other choice” but to get involved in such a dangerous, unhealthy, and very often debasing profession.

The people who are defending porn are trying to sugarcoat a turd and we are not buying it.

I wonder if her engaging in this activity and the fact that she talks about her school hasn’t caused at least some TV viewers to create a connection in their minds – Which means that someday your daughter or your son might go on a job interview and face a job interviewer who says, “Oh, isn’t that the school where the porn star went?” Maybe your daughter’s boss will then decide that it’s OK to sexually harass her because she went to Duke and “you know how those girls are.” I know you’re all going to tell me I’m being paranoid but if I were a parent who was actually paying the 60,000 a year, I’d be afraid that this girl had just cheapened the value of my child’s degree by creating that association.

Also, my girls go to a school where they’re not even allowed to wear certain items of clothing because they are “distracting”. I have to wonder if having old Porn Star whatshername in class wouldn’t be, um, distracting to at least some of the other students. And how about when they have to choose groups to engage in group discussions and projects and all the boys are jostling the other girls out of the way so they can be paired with the porn star. As a teacher, I have to wonder about the classroom dynamics in a situation where one member of your class is a porn star.

Duke might consider getting the alumni network to contribute to a fund to buy this girl out of the porn industry until she graduates. See if she would take the deal and re-focus her efforts solely on her degree in exchange for stopping the sexploitation of both herself and Duke. Might get some positive publicity for the effort (and yes you hate to reward bad behavior, but this seems unique). Just wishing out loud here because it would be nice if somebody could convince her to step back, grow up a bit more, and then if she wants to work for the sex industry after she graduates at least it would be from an older and more educated perspective. I wonder if she even has the ability to stop herself from continuing down this path if given the opportunity, or if she’s so deep into denial that she can’t even be reached.

I think that’s a good idea, chappa. I wouldn’t see this as rewarding bad behavior, but as throwing a life preserver to a very troubled young woman. Somehow I don’t see hordes of students clamoring for the “porn star scholarship.”

I agree that she might not accept the lifeline even if offered.

Well, what about all of the other students who are having trouble meeting tuition payment? You know, the ones who actually attend school. Nope. Bad plan.

I do agree she would not take the deal. For the first time in her life she is “hot” and right now she is loving it.

She obviously couldn’t have been accepted to Duke with just porn. Other parts of her application must show that she is an intelligent and outstanding girl, and that involving in porn industry is but a desperate measure. Duke officers accept her not because they like her porn, but because they want to offer her a better education so that she can stop being a porn star. If anyone is to blame, that is her parent.
