Don't Talk to the Cops?

A registration can come back with no information if it is a fake tag, which is much more common than a AG/DA/Judge plate.

Depends where you are. A whole lot of URMs, and others, are carrying weapons in Newark, for example.
You can certainly refuse to assist any investigation, just do not complain about high crime rates and unsolved crimes. That is the natural consequence, and a tradeoff you chose to make.

The odds of a URM carrying a weapon are “higher than zero.” A URM, or any other citizen intent on using a weapon in the commission of a crime, have no regard for the law and are therefore unconstrained by the reasonable expectations of a lawful society.

What percentage aren’t polite and civil? That is the question. Again, it’s “higher than zero.”

Keep in mind that I both liked, and agreed with your first post.

The second part of the sentence/paragraph clarifies the differences. Not sure why you chose URM for an analogy…my risk assessment was about people who can legally arrest you, fine you, and use force, up to and including lethal force against you. URMs don’t necessarily fall into that category…unless they are also LEOs (and then yes I wouldn’t talk to a URM LEO anymore than I would talk to a white LEO). Again, not at all analogous.

That is not the question. The question is whether to talk to the police. And my answer is, “No”.

Since you liked and agreed with my first post and the video (telling everyone not to talk with the police)…then I’m not sure why this thread is almost 300 posts long with you questioning why citizens would choose not to talk to the police. :woman_shrugging:t5:

I have far greater confidence in the LEOs using any weapon properly than I do in any of my fellow citizens doing so. You do not?

There are crooked politicians and crooked cops to be sure. But many have an attitude that “the cop/representative that I know is OK, it’s the other ones that are bad”.

I saw that video many years ago. It’s entertaining and informative. It was also released back when citizens that were stopped were much less confrontational with the police. If you plan to keep quite that’s fine, but you need to know what the actual law is regarding your interaction so you don’t protect yourself right into cuffs.

Great! I am glad they are making progress. Still have a ways to go. Murder isn’t on the top of my list of worries anywhere. Assault is.

From the article:
Reports of robberies in 2023 fell 16%, from 489 to 412, while aggravated assaults declined 9%, from 1,157 to 1,055, officials said, adding that the number of shooting victims declined 14%, from 186 to 160.

Sorry I can’t gift. Anyone can create an account for free (no credit card info) for a week or month. I don’t remember which.

You forgot to add that they can legally lie to you. Who would/should immediately trust someone who is allowed to lie to your face? If I have an interaction with a LEO I am always respectful and polite. But do I always trust them? No.

This is the key in my opinion.

Key to what? I’m pretty sure no one has advocated being disrespectful and rude to LEOs.

There have been plenty of posts suggesting that it is the victim’s fault when they are targeted and/or otherwise mistreated by LEOs, but I don’t think the stats back that up. For example, I don’t think the act of driving while black is somehow inherently disrespectful and rude. Do you?

That’s a mild understatement. :slightly_smiling_face: Been a lot of broad brush posts on this thread.

Reminds me of the time when former husband and I got pulled over fairly aggressively one time in New Hampshire. As soon as the officer came around and shone his light into FH’s face, he was visibly surprised and then said something about seat belts (we were both wearing seat belts) and let us go right away.

FH hadn’t cut his hair in a while, so he had a big fluffy Jewfro. We assumed at the time that the traffic stop might have had something to do with this, but of course we’ll never know for sure.

Did he also have a beard? Maybe they thought he was Santa Claus? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Well, now that you ask about the car… it was a silver VW Golf that we had bought used for $500 from Marvin Minsky! It was kind of a cool car because it had been vandalized and was missing the radio and some other small panels, and FH had gone to the MIT machine shop and machined aluminum replacements that we had bolted to the car (probably not very safe but we were poor graduate students ), so it had a kind of a cyborg look to it.

Sadly, this unique vehicle was totaled by a speeding stoplight runner shortly after the traffic stop incident, and we bought an incredibly boring white Toyota Corolla.

The Jewfro in the hooptie-mobile (RIP). What a vision, amazing! That’s my jam, I’d proudly ride along.

Care to enlighten the rest of us on the use of that offensive term? When I google it, I get youtubes of Asians with curly hair.

Hmm more research. Described as Greg Brady’s style in Brady Bunch show. Arguably antisemitic. How this relates to traffic stops is beyond me.
