dorm bedding/supplies

Where is everyone getting the dorm bedding and supplies?
Where are you shopping and how much are you spending?
Are your kids helping you pay for it with grad money or are you paying for it all?

Thanks!

My Dd has the option of ordering through her university and it will be there when she moves in. At first I thought the cost was high but looking into it further it is extremely reasonable: $209 for two sets of XL Twin sheets, comforter, blanket, throw, 4 towels, washclothes, pillow cases, hamper, bedside buddy, 2 pillows, egg crate and mattress pad.

Maybe your school has a similar plan? My oldest paid for her own bedding and most of her dorm supplies but I will probably pay for youngest DD’s as she will have to put in a good chunk of money toward the school required Macbook.

Are we talking boy or girl. Guys don’t much care where it comes from. My daughters did most of their shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond (bought something everytime we got 20% off coupon), Target and Walmart. As part of birthday, D2 got comforter from Urban Outfitter, but D1 got hers from Target (<$20). But I did get D1 one set of more expensive patterned sheets.

Both schools offered the Campus Linens where you buy a package and I know some boy moms that did that. My Ds didn’t love the colors but I feel we still were pretty frugal. It is more convenient if you do the Campus Linens and can send straight to school if far away. Another option, you can pick out what you want at any BB&Beyond store and have it ready for pickup in college town when you get there (and I don’t think you pay until you pick up so you can change your mind).

I paid for their stuff. Now if we already had XL twin sheet sets, etc I might have insisted they use those as at least the second set. But overall I think it’s part of the college excitement to get new stuff.

I would steer clear of Campus Linens. Feedback here has not been good at all. You can put together a similar package at Target (leaving out the items your student will never use) and it will be much better quality.

Be careful of some of those kits that come with the sheets/comforter etc. I just spent a weekend at someone’s beach condo and they had those packaged twin bed kits. The sheets were beyond horrible. Thread count of about 50! You could see through them and they felt like sandpaper. I am NOT picky, by the way… Sometimes you get what you pay for…

That said- Bed Bath, Kohl’s, sales at Dillards all work

I always forget Kohls and they have some good stuff. Look for optimum selections starting in June when even places that normally don’t have XL twins will have them out for college.

BTW, I heard same about campus linen quality but it is an option if shipping it to school is helpful

TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods will have dorm bedding and XL Twin sheets from June-August.

Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons never expire, (even though there is a printed date on the coupon). If you go to your local store, you can go through the store and scan the exact items you wish to purchase, they will then have the items awaiting pick up for you at the store close to the college. You also are able to add or subtract items at that time. You pay for the items at pick up and can use individual coupons for each item. We did this with both of our children, the store even had a dedicated cash register for their college and were wonderful to deal with. This helps for those who will fly or have limited car space. We also bought dust pans, hangers, garbage pails, etc. at a local family dollar store.

Also if you have a Target check or charge card you get 5% off. I wondered about the quality of those campus linens-I’ll pass. Thank you!

Boys do not use the second sheet of sheets. I’ve read that here - and now I believe it.

I have a son so I’m guessing he won’t care what his bedding looks like as long as it is soft. But a friend of mine whose daughter is starting at FSU actually coordinated with her future roommate on bedding–they already ordered matching sets from Pottery Barn. That sounds pricey to me but I thought the idea was cute.

My D does not want a second set of sheets. Wash and back on the bed.

Several years ago we purchased a Tommy Hilfinger duvet cover & sham, high-thread count all-cotton sheets, two full sets of towels, and a wastebasket at TJ Maxx for a very good price. All have made it through two full years of college and still look fine.

Go on amazon. I just order 2 sets, one is 600 thread count and another 1200. I got both sets for $140. I got D2 5 in topper from Overstock. She will bring her white down comforter and pillows from home. D2 is kind of picky with her bedding, so I am hoping she would be happy with one of 2 sets I got, otherwise I will try something else.

Pac Fung (from HKG) supply Four Seasons, Bloomingdale and Ralph Lauren, but I do not think they make XL.

No, I wouldn’t get campus linen supply.

Wow, I had no idea Campus Linens had such a bad rep! My DD is moving into an urban campus and no Target, BBB, or any kind of store like that within the city limits. I need to conserve car space because DD plans on bringing lots of shoes lol. We do have twin XL sheets at home already because DD has spent summers away at ballet intensives and dormed there.

I definitely agree that oldest DD never needed a second set of sheets.

Company Store has really nice sheets at reasonable prices; they wash and wear very well. Mattress topper also very reasonable - much less expensive than Kohl’s to my surprise. Last year sent S with two sets of sheets - a waste and would not bother if doing it again. I wanted all sheets washed so had them delivered home and then shipped them off to school. My issues - not my son’s! Did BB&B for all other supplies; their college ordering/delivery makes life really easy especially for folks like us whose kids go to school hundreds of miles away.

My DS actually used his second set of sheets but it was when they had overnight guests in their dorm. He washed and used the same set on his bed all year like the others have mentioned.

I remember being so caught up shopping for dorm supplies last year when DS was getting ready live in dorms. Truly, if keeping costs down is an issue, Target and Walmart are the way to go. Just give it a few more weeks and they will be promoting Dorm furnishings like crazy. We purchased most items at BB&B (save up those 20% coupons!) Two sets of sheets and two oversized bath towels worked well for DS. Everything is washed and ready to use next year- boys don’t really seem to care about a “new look” each year.

Macys frequently has the Tommy Hilfiger (Twin XL) sheet sets on sale, plus you can use your coupon. They are very soft and wear well. Both boys were sent off to college with the sheet sets and a TH comforter. (The comforter does not wash well as the filling pools inside but I can’t imagine the kids washing it anyway!! Even washing the comforter, it will be fine for several years.)

Most everything else was purchased at BB&B. Start collecting coupons…even expired and given to you by friends.

Towels- TJ MAXX and Marshalls are goof for that.

I’ve had really good luck with Overstock for dorm sheets/bedding. They stock the XL’s pretty much year round. We have only done one set of sheets as they take them off the bed, wash them, put them back on the bed. We do the same at home for the most part (but I have 2 or 3 sets for each bed anyway).

The Campus Linen places are crap. The towels are worse than cheep hotel towels and are about 1/2 the size of a good bath towel. The sheets are about as good as those character sheets kids had when they were little-aka sandpaper.

Someone posted on another thread about ordering from Bed Bath and Beyond close to campus, if there is one, and they have everything packaged and waiting for you to pick up on move in day. I thought that was a great idea, especially for the long distance moves.
