Dorms

The upperclassman housing is done, if you want to live on campus as most students choose to, via a lottery in May. Most rising sophomores will get housing but it is not guaranteed. As you may have heard, the worst possible place to end up is the Dillard complex, an ‘on campus’ dorm that’s actually a few miles down the road. You need to drive or take a bus to get to the main campus. Many sophomores end up in Dillard, but many also end up on campus in one of the upperclass dorms. You are assigned a lottery number, and then attend the selection meeting and pick where you want to live as you get called up by your number.

paulkim, it is quite hot and humid in September in the Burg. Sorry :)

dropofwater - it is my son who is going to WM but he isn’t worried about sheets or anything like that <g> so that’s why I am still here, I guess. Not many days left - very stressful for mothers <g>! My son has been focused on WM since the first day he visited there - I am not sure what clicked but something did.</g></g>

Sophs and up get a lottery number given out randomly (seniors get lowest, then jrs, then sophs, as 1 being the best, and going to a very lucky senior, and ~3000+ being the worst). Then they give out times for groups of like 100. (like, 1-100 @ 8am, 101-200 @ 9am, etc)

this should be the last year that Dillard is used for undergrad housing. In fall 2006, the new dorm on Barksdale field (right in the middle of old + new campus, prime location) should be completed.

And yes, it is hot and humid, and word is that move in day is always hot =P. You can hang out with people who have AC, or if the lounge in the dorm has AC =P

… you can also buy your own AC unit, though I don’t think that’s technically allowed.

You need the signature of your physician stating that you have asthma and that it is medically necessary for you to have AC - there is even a special form for it!

How many students live in triples and quads? I was very surprised to find quads listed!

I’ll be in a barrett triple. I saw I was in a triple room on my bill, and I was worried it was going to be a double overcrowd. but fortunately it’s an actual triple room… and I am getting a doctor’s note for AC, though it’s just from my dad

soccerguy,

You don’t really believe that the Barksdale dorm will be done on schedule do you? :)

there are a few triples. Most of them are probably overcrowd, but there are some actual triple rooms. Quads are few and far between. I know there’s 2 in Yates basement, but don’t know of any others off hand. Quads are huge. When you walk into them, you’re like “whoa…”

I’m living in an “overcrowd” double (3 people) next year, but I’ll have just about exactly the same space per person as my normal double last year, so I don’t expect any issues =P

slammer, of course it will we done! Construction is always on schedule, lol. http://www.wm.edu/reslife/residenceHalls/newresidencehallconstruction.php</a> actually they seem to be further along than I thought they would be. It’s actually rising out of the ground already it appears

Slammer - I lived in a triple many years ago…great friends, lots of fun, but the intensity wore me out by the end of the year. That third opinion, lifestyle, group of friends, habits, increased the chaos, not to mention that one roomie was a continuously practicing French Horn player. If everyone in the triple has a significant other who visits frequently…you can expect even more chaos! But, I write this with a smile on my face because I had a great year - got to know my other hallmates very well in addition to my roommates - but one year was enough of that grouping! Good luck with the triple!

Oops, I meant Soccerguy315 - sorry! I was trying to remember how I ended up in a triple - it was the only room left in the new coed by room dorm when we got to the front of the line. My friend and I found someone else in line (the French Horn player) and made a triple. This was the first coed by room dorm on campus and pre-computerization. You had to show up with your roommate, stand in line, and first come, first serve.

For the 2009s in the thread, there’s messages on the reslife website up from RA’s and Area directors, if you are interested. Link: http://www.wm.edu/reslife/residenceHalls/freshmen.php</a></p>

Rileydog - We did not register on computers either! Maybe part of W&M is still stuck in the 1600’s =P. Same deal, show up with your roommate(s), but the line was premade with numbers that were issued a couple weeks before.

The only significant other lives in ohio, so I don’t imagine she’ll be around much =P

We all lived in the same dorm last year, so hopefully it will go well =]. 2 of us do play instruments though, but I don’t imagine there will be practicing in the room (at least not much… lol)
