Are rack raisers allowed in the dorms at Wm & Mary? Also, someone mentioned a particular fan that is great for dorm rooms on the old WM forum last year - can’t seem to find that now - any thoughts on fans which are apparently a must!

yes, rack raisers are allowed.

if you ask for a dorm with AC, the fan won’t be as important. Most people brought a window fan. Just a big square thing that sits on the windowsill

Just received S’s room assignment today - Yates. Seem like the rooms are small - what about lofts? The package came with a sales card for lofts! The good news - Yates has AC.

is it possible to unbunk the beds in a yates room (11x15) without the lofts?

Question about Barrett bathrooms: 2nd and 3rd floors appear to have 1 bathroom for about 34 rooms x 2 people in each room? I hope those are HUGE bathrooms! Even if some of the rooms are singles that’s not a very good ratio.

McTree: Yes, it is possible to unbunk. I did it in a much smaller Taliaferro room sucessfully, but if you can do the loft I’d recommend it since it makes the room seem more spacious.

Riley: Yates rooms are some of the larger freshman dorms on campus and the building is very central so it’s a good place to be if you’re social. Yates is one of the top freshman dorm assignements - consider yourself lucky!

how is gooch?

Gooch is in the Boutetort complex, often referred to as the ghetto of W&M dorms because it’s a bunch of clustered together small apartment-esque buildings with few windows. The rooms are a decent size and there will be a lot of people around, but you’re pretty far from most class buildings (especially old campus). Most people I knew who lived in Boutetort weren’t unhappy about moving out. You are pretty close to the Caf (the best dining hall) however.

theslammer - thanks for the info - here’s another stupid question. I have just read several very long threads about bedding!!! WM says to buy regular sheets with deep pockets - the beds are 36" (narrower) and 80" (longer") although every other college website I have been on says to buy the XL. Anyway, my real question is - do most students use a mattress topper of some kind - a memorry foam or featherbed topper?

Riley - I only recall one of the kids in my hall last year using a mattress topper. Most people (myself included) just used the mattress cover, sheets, and a blanket. The beds aren’t the greatest but after you get used to them they’re fine.

I do remember that thing about the special sheets…not sure if we got the custom ones or just the XL, but if I had to guess I’m sure either one would do OK. The beds don’t stay made that long anyway :)

LOL - I am sure!

Lots of kids (son included) use the ‘egg crate’ mattress toppers - they roll up for transporting and seem to help ‘fill in’ the lumps in the mattress :)

We bought XL twin jersey sheets from Penneys and they worked great.

ctmom - thanks. I just bought some jersey XLs so that is reassuring. I thought about a memory foam topper but they are expensive and, from what I read, they smell! The egg crate sounds like a good solution. Thanks again!

I used an egg crate last year, and I’m getting another one for next year (we threw it out rather than bring it home).

bluejay, I haven’t heard complaints about lack of bathrooms in Barrett, though I agree that seems like it could be an issue (I just checked the reslife website b/c it seems like there should be more).

Riley - I’m also in Yates. Funny, seeing as I remember that you were the first person I talked to on the boards after getting admitted.

i will be the freshman at WM this fall…
man…i got assigned to the gooch…
from what i see above…gooch is the worst dorm in WM.
i heard they dont even have AC…
is it possible to move out next semester or something?

get a doctors note and they’ll give you a window AC unit =P I survived without AC… though I admit I would have rather had it.

and… the chances of you being able to move out are small.

Don’t worry about it paulkim. AC is available if you have a friendly doctor (as soccerguy stated). And the dorms are what you make of them; while Gooch does have its downsides, it is a very social place with tons of freshman all around and close to things like W&M Hall (basketball), the Caf, the Rec, new campus classes, etc. You’ll be fine.

how does the dorm “choosing” work for sophomores and up?

thanks,

thanks for all those suggestions…
i guess i have to make of out it. ^ ^
anyways…how is the weather around early september?
Hope it isn;t too hot…
