My oven is teetering on kicking the bucket and I am hosting Thanksgiving! If you recently purchased an electric double wall oven, and are happy with it, please chime in. Bonus points if it’s not over 2k!
I know this isn’t what you asked, but my lower oven died the day before I was hosting. I used crock pots (mine and a couple of neighbors’) to cook some of the side dishes. My H and I also looked into cooking the turkey on the grill but luckily we didn’t have to do that.
They all have advantages and disadvantages. Go to the local appliance store and buy one asap!!
Make sure that your electrical circuit powering the old oven can handle whatever oven you choose. You can end up with a $2,000 oven and a very large electrician bill.
We have Miele, but they are way over your budget. I have been very impressed with KitchenAid and Thermador appliances, so check those out.
I’m looking at the 30in GE model. Good reviews. And in our price range. (1500.00). I would splurge on a nicer model if I knew we were staying in this house long term. I am somewhat leary of the GE brand. We got burned on a GE washer recently that had many good (and to be fair, some) bad reviews. Took a chance and boy am I sorry we did. Home Depot has been awful to work with in getting it exchanged.
Love the comment about crock pots and grill as backup!!
We just bought a Kitchen Aid Oven/Microwave where the microwave doubles as a second oven. But it was over $3K installed.
Buy at a local appliance store. We found that the prices were very comparable. Home Depot charged extra for everything including delivery, taking away the old appliance and even the power cord! Local appliance store didn’t charge extra for anything. Plus…they have their own repair people…and great customer service!
@BunsenBurner Hubby is on it. He’s the tech guy and I am the shopper. He said the specs work for the GE, but he wants to research a bit more. Funny thing, he remembered me talking about the washer thread here on CC, about the trusty (yet somewhat obscure) Speed Queen brand. He thought maybe CC could come to the rescue again with a good recommendation
@thumper1 Amen! I’m done with HD. Forever!
We also had a dreadful experience with HD delivering an oven they couldn’t install, and then making them take it back. Went to a regional chain (PC Richards) and had a much much better experience. Never going to HD for a major appliance again.
I’ve grilled the Thanksgiving turkey for years. Sometimes it’s because I needed the oven space and sometimes we do two turkeys for a big crowd. It always comes out great! It works best with turkeys 12 lbs or less.
When we remodeled our kitchen, I opted for a single oven and a warming drawer. (GE convection oven and Kitchenaide panel front warming drawer.) We like to entertain and also are the default extended family holiday dinner hosts. The warming drawer makes timing dishes much easier, and also allowed for an additional storage drawer underneath.
Kitchenaid
We replaced the monster 27" double oven with a 24" and a 30" single ovens so if the control panel croaks on one, the other will be still operational. They fit into the existing space just fine, only needed a shelf between them and a second outlet, but Mr. handled that fine. The smaller one gets a lot of use here in the empty nest land!
And yes to grilled turkey!
We have an Electrolux single oven and I love it. It comes as a double too. I think it was about $800 a couple of years ago so a double should come in under $2000.
One thing I like is that it has a lot of low settings like dehydrate and bread proof. It also has a special “perfect turkey” feature that I’ve never used but I might have to look at again!
When our wall ovens died we had to replace them with cheaper ones, and I didn’t realize that the interior cavity would be significantly smaller. Make sure you do not end up with a 24" oven and nothing bigger. A 24" oven cannot accommodate a 1/4 sheet pan or a full-size roasting pan. Bane of my existence.
It seriously depends on the brand. The Dacor double oven we are about to take out is technically 30 inches, but the inside of each oven looks tiny. Can’t wait until that old thing is out.
We replaced a Thermadore with a Thermadore recently. Not in your price range but we’ve been happy with the brand, fwiw. Don’t love the new one quite as much but it’s still good.
Kitchen Aid double oven. Top has convection. I’ve had mine about 8 years without problems. I agree with using local appliance folks. Not sure if KA fits your budget. I would not go with GE. Ask local folks to double check your measurements for installation before you finalize purchase. They will come out and do it. Saves them headaches.
Not what you asked for but have you seen the turkey roaster thread?
