Doubling up AP Chem and Bio

For those who have taken AP Chem and Bio in the same year, is it doable? How heavy is the homework load? What score did you get on both exams?

bump

AP Chem and Bio will at least complement each other because Biology tends to build off of Chemistry – thus, taking one helps the other. The more you understand Chem, the more you’ll understand Bio. That being said, AP Chem is one of the hardest APs if you don’t have a good teacher (I took Honors with an overall bad teacher, and the whole class was struggling). Biology is more memorization, but something that content-heavy combined with the courseload of AP Chem comes out to… a lot.

Currently, I’m in AP Bio and we’ll end up covering two or three PowerPoints per class. AP classes do tend to be lecture-format, so you have to be decent at taking notes and remembering to look over them. We’ve also had several we’ve needed to straight up memorize, without really explaining what they are because they’ll be useful in the future. None of the concepts are beyond a bit of conceptualized thought, though, so long as you can think in 3D well enough.

Homework depends on the teacher, but you’ll probably have textbook chapters to read before every class or so. As far as scores in general go, for the 2014 AP Chem test, 10.1% of people got a 5, 16.6% a 4, and 25.7% a 3.
For the 2014 AP Bio test, 6.5% got a 5, 22.2% got a 4, and 35.1% got a 3.

So, for AP Bio, less people got a 5 but more people passed the test overall.

Take the AP Chem test scores from previous years with a grain of salt because they are revamping the test for 2015h.

If you’re science-oriented, then do it. Course load depends on what it’s like at your school. You know best, ask kids who have taken / are currently in those classes.

The exam was revised for 2014, so you can use last year’s scores as a starting point. Having said that, there was a feeling among educators that the FRQ section was too long last year, so expect that to be shortened.

As others have said, much will depend upon your teacher and upon how science oriented you are. If you feel up to it, go for it.

@skieurope @Ctesiphon @hadron thanks for the input

I took AP Chem last year and got a 5, and now, I’m taking AP Bio.

It’s definitely doable like previous posters said. So far, it seems that Bio is based off Chem and more. DO expect a heavy courseload though. Chem is hard. I mean, HARD. Bio isn’t as hard but it does require some work.

Good luck.

I’m tripled in AP phys 2, ap chem, and ap bio, and have been doing fine so far. It’s manageable.
