Downton Abbey

Mary would only be interested in a guy if he was hard to get. Mr. Tall Dark Handsome danced with her and impressed her with his intellect, but then he was going to leave without saying goodbye, didn’t seem terribly interested, and was very noncommittal. Mary is used to being chased. She is the type who will only want what she can’t have.

re Marigold … Was there not also speculation about Sybie a couple seasons back?

Lady Sinderby threatened her H at the wedding with a divorce and a real scandal if he did anything to prevent it from taking place (episode 8). Made me wonder at the time what kind of a card she holds over him…maybe she already knows!

I think Mary should end up with Blake or someone Blake-like, or Tom-like, or even Carson-like who actually humanizes her. Mr. TDH brought out nothing but her cold, sarcastic self. She chased him too, while still being nearly frosty. She needs to let go and laugh!

You know, I forgot about Lord Sinderby’s dislike of divorce – it’s especially hypocritical considering his dalliance and out-of-wedlock child.

Forget his name but Sinderby’s butler – obviously hates his employer, and has no respect for him, either. He should leave and seek work elsewhere. What a seriously unhappy household. Amazing that Lady Sinderby and Atticus should both have sunny, happy dispositions.

I’m not sure why some of you are thinking that Marigold has Down Syndrome. She looks nothing like a child with Down Syndrome. In any case, if you google Marigold images, there are several photos of her with Edith and they’re both smiling broadly. I do wonder why they have changed from the previous child actor, though.

Agree about Mary and Blake. I liked him. He keeps her on her toes but seems nice and genuinely interesting.

I expect a drama next season with Mary falling hard for Tall Dark Handsome, he strings her along and finally breaks her heart in some way, and then Blake is waiting in the wings. Mary finally learns to appreciate a nice guy, and she marries him.

She must be wary of someone who could easily die in a car crash, no? Or, maybe in her Mary vacillating way she will seem entranced by the racing but ultimately will turn to someone more steady and practical.

^^Wasn’t Matthew a nice guy? She certainly appreciated him.

Possibly because she made a very serious effort to ruin Mary’s life with her letter to the Turkish ambassador?
I’m truly amazed at how so many viewers have brushed that whole storyline aside but think that Mary is so horrible to Edith. Mary’s treatment of Edith is bush-league nasty most of the time but nothing she has done to her even comes close to Edith’s vindictiveness. AFAIK, Edith has never apologized to Mary or indeed the rest of the family for that move which would have damaged all of them, had it become public (which was threatened by her newspaper-magnate fiance). I don’t think her treachery was ever revealed to the rest of the family and when Mary confronted her she called her a slut to her face. I might possibly hold that against a sister who did that to me.

I agree with this. Apparently, Edith will escape the scandal of having an out of wedlock child (with a married man which is far worse IMO than Mary’s ill-fated interlude with the rapey Turkish houseguest). She’s pretty lucky, considering what usually happened to women who that in that time period. Even her dad doesn’t seem to mind.

Mary and Edith have been fighting since childhood. Mary was going to marry the cousin who would become the next earl who died on the Titanic, but Edith was the one who loved him (puppy love, maybe, but Edith wanted to marry him)

We are marching toward 1929, and some of these rich folk have to be heading toward financial disaster. Sinderby is in banking. Atticus is going to NY to work in banking. Dark times ahead.

I agree the sibling issues between Mary and Edith go before Pamuk. Actually I think the earlier child actor looked mor like she had Down syndrome. I think LRP may be right about Mary.

Was Season 5 only in 1924? Hard financial times are only a few years away. But if there is only one season left, they may not get there. I’m not sure whether or not I want to see them go through hard times. Maybe better to end the show in happy times? On the other hand, it could be very interesting to see how they all weather the coming storm!

There’s only one season left?

The writer has only agreed to one more season. There could be more, but not committed yet.

Per my Twitter feed yesterday, Maggie Smith was apparently joking that next season is her last, i.e. by saying she “must be about 102 now” in the show. She said she’ll be with DA as long as it goes. Of course, if next season is the last for DA, it’s obviously her last as well.

Loved the clothes, loved the scenes at Brancaster Castle, LOVED loved loved the impending marriage between Carson and Mrs. Hughes, and loved this observation from Tom and Lorenzo about Mary’s new beau:

It wouldn’t be the first time that someone in power had a different view of the rules for everyone else vs. the rules for himself.

I wonder if Edith will get married to the agent who adopts Marigold only to have Gregson somehow return. I know they got the official bad news about Gregson, but that has never stopped shows from having supposedly dead people return.

the whole gregson thing to me still seems unsettled. I’m curious why none of his family members contested the will as they not married.
