Coureur, you’re right! Clearly Isobel snowed me, I had forgotten about the young husband who couldn’t breathe.

No, Isobel was right about the husband who had “dropsy” and couldn’t breathe. She recommended a new treatment that Clarkson was reluctant to try, but in the end, it worked. She was wrong about Molsley’s rash which was caused by pulling out some poisonous plants. I think she definitely would have caught the eclampsia. She’s a woman, after all!

I like(d) all of the daughter. Mary and Edith both have their moments, but both are fundamentally good people, IMHO. My H and I commented when we first started watching about how much Mary (Michelle Dockery) looked like Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) - they could easily be mother and daughter. Michelle Dockery is stunning.

I am friends with Zoe Boyle’s (Lavinia) parents and sister. Believe me, the whole damn family is gorgeous.

Good lord I completely forget what Edith did to Mary in Season 1? Anyone care to refresh my memory??

Oh, just a little bit of correspondence to the Turkish ambassador, relaying the true story surrounding his son’s sudden and tragic death. But that was all ; )

Agreed. And of course she’ll have a boy.

Operasdivasmom has is right about Isobel and Molesly’s supposed erisypelas. And it’s Violet who gives the right diagnosis. Dr. Clarkson is just biting his tongue the whole time.

Would the product of an illicit affair actually be in line to inherit in those times?

A quick scan of Wikipedia says no, not in 1920. But by 1926, if the parents married, then the offspring became legitimate. I’d say that’s a little farfetched for Downton, but really, what counts as farfetched at this point?

^^And ouch to poor Matthew who by that time (1926) has saved the Abbey twice (Lavinia’s inheritance and properly managing the estate). Yet–by Robert remarrying and producing an heir–heigh ho! DA is no longer his or Mary’s.

One of my favorite detective stories, Duplicate Death, hinges on illegitimate children inheriting titles. According to the story, the offspring become legitimate (they are “legitimated”) if the parents later marry, but nevertheless they can’t inherit titles. So I don’t think Jane and Robert’s hypothetical illegitimate son can become the Earl.

You’re right. It was the rash. I remembered that Isobel had been wrong in one of her diagnoses, but I mixed up which medical problem she got wrong.

I don’t think Edith is homely at all; she’s quite beautiful, actually, even while in character on the show. And they work to make her look more unattractive than she is; I often notice that the camera is at an unflattering angle when Edith is on screen; she’s often photographed with the camera low, almost under her chin.

Then again, I know plenty of extremely attractive women who were never the “pretty sister” in the family. I think Edith has been told her whole life that she lacks the assets of her other sisters and she believes it. But that may have little to do with her actual looks!

And adopted kids can’t inherit titles either.

Have you seen this? I didn’t scroll the entire thread to make sure.

If Downton Abbey took place entirely on Facebook: Season 3, Episode 4.

OMG, the real-life pictures are freaking me out. No, the “real” Edith is not homely, but “I wouldn’t call her a great beauty,” as my English father would say. He would also describe O’Brien as a “handsome woman” in real life.

I love O’Brien’s little curlicue bangs on both sides of her head. Singularly unattractive and spinster-ish.

Oh, Cardinal Fang, very helpful information! And nottelling, I am disappointed. Because my next idea was to have Matthew and Mary adopt the little by-blow. But I guess that’s not happening either.

Let’s see. Robert will just have to divorce Cora and marry Jane before producing the heir.

And VH, the curlicues are something, aren’t they? I saw someone suggest that Sarah O’Brien and Miles O’Brien (from Star Trek NG) look alike. I’m pretty sure it’s because they both have sideburns. :)
