Not Fawlty Towers? :)

^^^^^i’ve never been accused of being a high brow!

I remember the name “Poldark” but can’t recall what it was about. Was it a miniseries? I think my mom and I watched it…

Now it is time to set my DVR for Sunday night since we will be watching the Superbowl. Will stick my fingers in my ears and sing lalalalalala until I can watch DA on Monday night!

Here’s an interesting connection. According to Wikipedia, Julian Fellowes “led the tributes” for Angharad Rees at her memorial service. She was married (but later divorced) to Christopher Cazenove who played Charlie on the Duchess of Duke Street, another favorite Masterpiece series.

I watched Poldark with my D in reruns when she was in 6th grade. That was the first more grownup thing we watched together. Her teacher mentioned she seemed sleepy some days and she confessed she was staying up to see Poldark. Her (older) teacher smiled and said “Hmmm, that Ross Poldark…” We thought that was so funny at the time.

“I also loved A Town Like Alice. Had quite the crush on Bryan Brown for years afterwards”

Alwaysamom, we could have formed a fan club!

Also want to mention my deep affection for “Mapp & Lucia” which sent me running to buy and read all the EF Benson M & L novels. Total hilarity.

And ah, yes, “The Duchess of Duke Street”! Many good memories being brought up here.

I loved “A Town Like Alice”. The book is very good also.

Another Masterpiece series I loved was “I, Claudius”. Like “Upstairs Downstairs” it is filmed on a sound stage so it doesn’t look as good as “Downton”, but the intrigue was captivating. I can’t seem to find I Claudius on Netflix. Is it anywhere else for free?

Mapp and Lucia! I loved that series too. I particularly remember Lucia playing piano duets with her friend Georgie.

I liked A Town Like Alice, though it was very sad. I read that book in junior high. My father was a big fan of the author, Nevil Shute, and he used to go to the city library to get his novels for me to read.

How about The Flame Trees of Thika? Did anyone else love that one? That was another of my favorites and I almost named my D Elspeth. The father in that series is Dr. Clarkson in Downton.

Ah, Pride and Prejudice. The question is, which one? I think that the best version, truest to the book, is the one with David Rintoul as Darcy. The screenplay was by novelist Fay Weldon. The Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version was certainly entertaining, but not very true to Austen. I haven’t seen the one with Kiera Knightly.

Count me in as also having a crush on Ross Poldark! I loved that series, and like missypie, also contemplated using Ross as a name for my future son.

If we’re reminiscing about PBS/BBC series, did any of you see The Buccaneers? It was based on Edith Wharton’s last unfinished novel about a group of “new money” American women going to England to find aristocratic husbands. Mira Sorvino and Carla Gugino were two of the young women.

Loved, loved Buccaneers!

Okay, if I had a crush on Ross Poldark, I was obsessed with Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy. That smile at the very end when he marries. Oh that Mr. Darcy…

Hands off of Mr. Darcy! He’s mine!

Thanks to all for new ideas of shows to watch. I have one question for those who liked the Brideshead Revisited series- is this the series with Jeremy Irons? I own that one and have never made it pass the first disc. It sounds like I need to give it another go.

Bridgeshead is really really slow, good story though.

They made a movie of Brideshead Revisited a few years ago. I remember watching it, does anyone else?

If you like Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice <stops here="" to="" fan="" self=""> you might also like the BBC series North and South. That last scene… <picks up="" fan="" again=""></picks></stops>

(There is also some unrelated American thing called North and South. I’m referring to the British one.)

See what I meant about cult following of females? :D

Sorry, I missed your post, Consolation. IIRC, you were the one who inducted me into that particular cult. :)

Yes, but it was awful. The TV series was almost a word-for-word transcription of the book, while the movie was (IMO) a desecration.

Other favorite BBC series: To Serve Them All My Days, The Citadel, Sorrell and Son, and the original *Forsyte Saga/i.
