Dozens killed in Nice as truck mows people over at Bastille Day celebration

I am an avowed Francophile, so this pains me greatly. Claims have been made that gunfire was exchanged between the truck occupant(s) and police. So sick and tired of murder and mayhem.

My birthday is today. :frowning: It was always my dream to be in France on Bastille Day, so I saved up money as a new engineer and surprised DH with a trip to Paris in 1989, the 200th anniversary. This makes me sad.

Very sad. Prayers for France.

This just makes me sick. Those poor people, just enjoying a day. I was actually coming here to see if anyone has ever rented an apartment in Paris before, instead of staying at hotels…now I’ve lost my mojo.

I’ve enjoyed Bastille Day in Paris also, @MaineLonghorn. So very, very sad to target a celebration that is meant to be enjoyed by all - including children. France 24 reportage includes a mother talking about how they ran, leaving the children’s stroller behind.

Now I’m reading possibly 60 dead…maybe more.

france has some decisions to make

》》 According to the Daily Mail, “it is believed the gunmen are holding hostages in the Meridien Hotel and the Buffalo Grill restaurant … The RAID anti-terror squad has been deployed to the city.”

… There was no immediate claim of responsibility but according to the Twitter account of the terrorism-news portal TRACTerrorism.org, Islamic State affiliated Telegram accounts were posting images from Nice.《《

Heartbreaking =((

Why?
So tired of people hurting others, who claim to be doing it for their “God”.

So many needless victims of brutality.

Soooo sad!

Now reading 73 dead.

Hadn’t heard about possible hostage situation; will have to go look for that.

@MaineLonghorn, Happy Birthday nevertheless. One of my dear friends was born on July 14.

D2 dated a guy who was born on September 11. He said it was always kind of a downer after 2001.

before this attack the big story in france was this

france has so much to deal with on so many fronts and it seems lost at sea without a sail.

^Ironic that the French president had to defend himself on Bastille Day.

Well France, time to amp up truck control.

In all seriousness, it appears that the attacker has been killed. https://www.yahoo.com/news/truck-plows-crowd-nice-france-many-injured-paper-213412656.html

$11,000 a month on hair…is the 21st century version of let them eat cake! (the irony is thick and sad)

Sad, indeed.

I was wondering how a truck could kill that many people but apparently someone (or two people) got out of the truck and started shooting into the crowd.

CNN is saying that firearms, explosives, and grenades were found inside the truck.

I’m sick inside.

Does anyone know how big the truck is?

Edit: See the picture at the top of the page I linked below. There’s a picture of the truck.

》》 Anit-terrorism police take over the investigation

A spokesman for the interior ministry confirms that – contrary to some reports – no hostages were taken.

“There is no hostage-taking,” interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told AFP, denying dozens of rumours following the incident.

“An individual drove a truck into the crowd. He was killed by police,” he said.

“Investigations are currently under way to establish if the individual acted alone or if he had accomplices who might have fled,” Brandet said.

Anti-terrorism investigators have taken over the investigation, prosecutors said.《《
