Dozens killed in Nice as truck mows people over at Bastille Day celebration

Some reports are saying that the shots were fired while fireworks were going on which disguised the sound…keeping people from knowing what was going on.

I have relatives in the south of France, but a couple hours maybe from Nice. We were nearby this time last year. They have suffered too much in their country - my heart aches for them.

sickening. when will the madness ever end?

Nice-Matin just tweeted that the driver was 31 year old French-Tunisian man who lived in Nice.

Not a refugee. Home grown terrorist.

France has had their fill of home grown terrorists. I suspect they have been regretting and reforming their liberal immigration policies for some time. This will just reinforce people’s desire to curtail immigration, particularly from Arab countries.

I just heard a statistic I hadn’t known before: an estimated 70% of prisoners in France are Muslims. There are definitely engrained, systemic issues (unemployment and discrimination being other issues), as have been discussed before during previous terrorist attacks in France, that contribute to this home grown terrorism and isolationist tendencies and need to be addressed in some fashion. It’s a complicated problem with no easy solutions.

Hopefully, our country can learn from these mistakes and not repeat the pattern going forward.

“Not a refugee. Home grown terrorist.”…not sure of your point…he was tunsian and not a syrian or from yemen or iraq. that should bring great comfort to the people of france . (??)

France had colonized much of Africa and has a strong relationship with that area. Morocco, Algeria, and other countries are part of what was French West Africa and they are predominantly Muslim countries. How many immigrants come from there, vs. from the old Indochine? Asia is much further away.

Like it or not if you colonized a part of the world or went to war with a country you will be closely related forever. Sometimes the aftermath works well, sometimes it does not.

Saw a U.S. middle east expert on an interview the other day. He opined that while ISIS has lost and continues to lose territory to the Allies, there will be continued and significant attacks in western nations by ISIS.

So if we let them do whatever they want in the middle east and release all Muslims from jail in France, it would help the situation?

I read that he was born in Tunisia. I have not heard how long he lived in France.

He must have had help to get the grenades, guns and explosives that were in that truck.

“So if we let them do whatever they want in the middle east and release all Muslims from jail in France, it would help the situation?”

NO ONE said that. You are being intentionally antagonistic and simplistic regarding comments made.

My son and DIL were right there on the promenade in Nice 4 days ago !! They were waiting for a bus there. Too close. I had warned them about going to France for a friend’s destination wedding. Glad they made it home safe.

I was at a concert tonight and as we walked out, people were turning on their phones and news of the French attacks ripped through the crowd. It was a surreal feeling to feel the crowd go from a post-concert adrenaline (and substance) high to solemn and serious.

More horror from ISIS. They shot down a Syrian air force pilot and crucified him.

I responded sarcastically. I didn’t think that was the solution or that anyone suggested that. I’m sorry, I am kind of like Hawkeye in MASH - I respond to fear or anger with sarcasm to not let it get to me.

The fact is that many societies are at war here. Who will be the victor has yet to be determined.

Can’t even post about this. So sad.

So sad for France. So sad for the world!

Unbelievably and can’t even equate sad for the families. I hope and pray that my family, and all families, will not have to experience these horrific tragedies in the future. I know accidents and sickness will happen. But these senseless acts of killing innocent people is just so awful in a different way.

More on existing racism and discrimination in France that can result in discontent that can incite murderous terrorism or provide recruits for such:

There are about half a million Viatnamese refugees in France. I wonder how they managed to integrate within French society without losing their cultural/religious identity. Many in France consider Thitch Nhat Hanh as one of their own. Wonder why. Yes, getting “educated” in a madrassa is your best bet to find a meaningful job.
