Just for fun - meat type or veggie type…tell us how you like to dress your hamburger or hot dog. Or do you go naked?!
I’m a toppings/condiment girl. Opposite of my H who likes everything mostly without.
The perfect at home burger: cheddar cheese tomato, raw onion, pickle or jalapeños/banana pepper, lettuce or arugula. A combo of light ketchup and mayo OR a fancy spicy mayo-type like Ayoh.
The perfect hot dog: a dog with a snappy casing. Local Tony Packo Hungarian dogs are ideal. Mustard, chili sauce if available, shredded cheddar onions, something pickled and spicy like jalapeños or banana. I’ll pass on a bottled sweet relish.
I am condiment-free. I do not like ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise. Ick and yuck.
I like grilled onions and Swiss cheese or cheddar on a hamburger. Lettuce and tomato are okay additions, but not necessary for me.
Hot dogs are best when they are coney dogs … Detroit style coney chili and onions (but no mustard for me). I will eat a regular hot dog, preferably Koegel, typically naked (the hot dog, not me). I don’t mind chopped onions and/or relish, but I don’t “need” them.
I’m having a veggie burger for dinner tonight but my preferred would be a wagyu burger w/smoked gouda, caramelized onions, dill pickles, lettuce, and truffle aioli. Those toppings will be on my veggie burger tonight.
I’m slightly embarrassed to admit my hot dog toppings but I’m not originally from Chicago so no haters please Yellow mustard, ketchup, dill pickle spear, raw onions, fresh tomatoes, celery salt. (I don’t like the neon relish or the hot peppers and I like my ketchup, sorry Chicagoans).
If I’m eating a hot dog, I’m either going just mustard…or Chicago style: mustard, tomato, sports peppers, relish, onion, pickle spear/pickled tomatoes.
I kind of like everything, and I like both veggie and regular burgers, as well as hotdogs (beef). My favorite toppings are ketchup, mustard (any is OK but the seedy kind is best), mayo, dill pickles, cole slaw, avocado, pastrami or kosher “bacon,” tomatoes, lettuce - really anything except actual pieces of onion.
I had a double Impossible burger with avocado, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, ketchup last week at a restaurant (with sweet potato fries) and I’m still thinking back on it fondly.
Interesting we had a cook out this past weekend, 14 people. We had burgers, Tony Packo dogs (bigger than a regular hot dog, but not a brat) and veggie burgers. By far the most popular were the dogs! I think because we don’t have them often (a hamburger maybe more common place at home or out) the dog just sounded good!
Not just any spicy peppers, it has to be roasted New Mexico green chile. Freshly roasted is best ,but canned or jarred green chile is acceptable in a pinch.
A cookout starts with roasting peppers on grill until the skin turns black and splits. The smell of roasting green chiles is part of the cookout experience. Then while the burgers cook, you let the chiles steam in a covered bowl. Next you peel the chiles and pop out the seed case (wearing rubber gloves unless you don’t want to be able to touch your mucus membranes for the next 12 hours…) Then slap a chile on top of the gooey cheese of your cheeseburger.
Hamburgers - cheddar cheese, sauteed onions, sauteed mushrooms, sometimes with crispy bacon and sliced avocado. If I’m feeling messy a sweet BBQ sauce on top!
Hot Dogs - just a bun and only eat them at ball games.
