I just had to return a LaBlanca swimsuit b/c the cup size was too large for me (there was no option to choose cup size on the suit). I love their suits but wish that they didn’t make the assumption that a larger size means a larger bust! I wear a size 10 typically in bathing suits but do not have a large chest. Every suit I have tried with built in cups have been enormous on my chest (B cup so I’m not flat chested!)
I’m laughing with you, not at you
@4kids4us A few years ago I wanted a new one piece so went to Macys and I couldn’t find anything without huge cups. I ended up ordering a La Blanca one piece from Zappos. The one I ordered just had a shelf bra.
Count me as another who only now buys sports bra with a back clasp or one that zips in the front. I just couldn’t deal with the gymnastics getting them on and off.
Yes, I only buy bras that had a clasp in the back. These ones with no way of fastening/unfastening are for the birds (or gymnasts). Definitely not on my list of wearable items.
I never remove the pads and just hand wash and dry without heat—roll in towel & dry on fluff setting and then just hang—so far have never had a pad disintegrate in many many years.
My problem is that I run so much in hot & humid weather, that chafing would be a big issue with clasps and zippers. I sweat just walking outside to get the mail. Try running 50 mpw!
Mine are a bit big too, but I like the suit otherwise, so I’m going with it. Bra-sized swim is the way to go for more precise cup sizes but most of those have the removable pads.
Another Dressing Young “food for thought” article - older woman (they mention over 35! Yikes!) and wearing a bikini for a beach wedding (NOT for the actual wedding!)
Thoughts??
I say, is anyone questioning men and their pot bellies and other “things” hanging out of too small bathing suits?!!!
I think the author looks amazing in her bikini and she should wear it and own it!
I think the days of body shaming women in swim suits is over for this generation. If the author can blow off judgements from her peers or parents, my vote is to go for it!
Gabrielle Union looks amazing!
The author should wear what makes her feel confident, with the approval of the bride. Unless everyone was in a bikini for the event, I would hesitate to be the only one, regardless of whether I could “pull it off”. Adding to mix that friends and family are on the conservative side, I would probably choose something other than a bikini.
Also love it when the men questioning and judging women’s appearances are the types that should be consulting a full length mirror on their own accord
I find the acceptance of differences refreshing. While beauty standards evolve, I find the present state of respectful “you do you” freeing. Conformity makes a lot of people miserable.
I have a friend who will be 74 in August. Not only would she never consider wearing a bikini, she stays completely covered up all summer long. Very self-conscious about the effects of gravity and typical age-related wrinkling on her upper arms and thighs.
Last summer she attended an outdoor concert in Texas. She had sent a pic of what she was wearing. Jeans, long-sleeved white shirt and black jacket. I asked wouldn’t she be hot? She got kinda testy with me about knowing what was appropriate to wear. When she posted her pics of FB, about 80% of other audience members I could see had on shorts and t-shirts. There were a few jeans and t-shirts in the mix. She clearly is very old-school about covering up the wrinkly bits as one ages and definitely judges people who don’t. I think it’s ridiculous.
Maybe my attitude is a result of having lived in Florida. NO ONE cares down there.
Re: the bikini at the wedding pool party. I wouldn’t wear a white bikini. I would also be cognizant of the bride’s wishes.
Prima Donna and Marie Jo don’t line their swim tops (bra-sized). Not inexpensive though!
@Hoggirl - the attitude is similar in Hawaii where we often go on vacation. No one cares or stares… unless it is a really old dude wearing a thong Speedo - that one might get a couple of funny looks.
Europe too. I saw many women over 50 (and a few over 70) wearing bikinis in France, or just the bikini bottom. The non-self-policing of the body was refreshing to me. Just a body enjoying the sun and ocean.
My one rule about swimwear was to avoid white and other light colors that tended to be translucent when wet. I think the author looks amazing and has lovely skin and body.
I loved my bikini days and then after awhile decided I preferred wearing bottoms with more coverage and then a rash guard shirt, forcUV protection. Finally, had to stop swimming entirely because it gave me cull body hives when water temperatures were colder than outdoor air.
FYI, the woman in the pic with the white bikini is NOT the woman asking the question about bathing suit/wedding. That is a pic of the woman, age 50 referenced in the podcast they refer to.
I did not write the letter. I do have first hand experience with this situation.
But I recently attended a destination wedding that had a beach day. There was also a snorkel trip for a much smaller group.
It was on a Caribbean island and most if not all women wore two piece suits regardless of age that I saw on the beaches.
But I will say that the women who attended the wedding of a certain age all were not in bikinis but all of the younger women were.
I wore a tankini even though I really wanted to wear a two piece. I was also dressed more casually than the other women my age who came as they wore dressy swimsuits. With fancy coverups. And pretty straw hats.
I wore what I would wear here, a swimsuit with short bottoms and a rash guard. I had both a short sleeve one and a long sleeve one. And a bucket hat.
I was underdressed but didn’t burn. And all the young people bought long sleeve rash guards.
And had a ton of fun being in the water doing water stuff
That’s Gabrielle Union, right?
Lol yes it is - I personally don’t know who she is (till I looked her up)
