Living in south Florida, I’d melt if I tried to cover my arms and legs. I don’t leave the house to shop in shorts, though. I wear a skort or a short skirt. My favorite is a denim one.
I have a variety of swimsuits, none ideal on my short pear-shaped body. I find myself often gravitating to bikini top and some bottoms that I got at thrift shop (black, looks like very short cycling shorts)… especially if short on packing space. Typically I am on the beach or at poolside with top and shorts over top of swimsuit, trying to get as little sun exposure as possible - ha, big hat and sunglasses too.
@showmom858 - So glad to hear you’ll have beach time with granddaughter - that sounds fun!! I’d be in the water too if I had a playmate ![]()
I worry that woman are too critical of own bodies. I know a grandmother/widow who is probably almost 80 but looks at least a decade younger. She is very short, quite slim/fit - has been doing silver sneakers for 13 years! Walks a lot, is a great role model for keeping an active life. I was shocked when she said she was avoiding sleeveless options for a summer/humid wedding because “I don’t want to show my flabby arms”. Methinks her arms are likely better than mine (and I’m bmi 22). I don’t do much sleeveless, but that’s because I never really did (too cold in AC) …so it feels odd.
Back on topic, my husband bought me another very lovely necklace for Mother’s Day. Makes me realize that I need more solid colored tops! An excuse to go shopping ![]()
I have 2 swimsuits from Lands End, because they have petite sizing.
As in many things, we are often our own worst critics. While others may not give a thought to our flabby arms or creppy skin (I don’t really know how to spell it!) other people probably don’t really notice as long as you are dressed nice and have a smile. But we are all different and the adjustment to new body images can take some time!
I keep a rotation of different bathing suits because we do always do a beach vacation and we have a pool. Different favs depending on if I’m sunning or swimming myself or with others. Or walking the beach instead of just sitting in a lounge chair.
But I have been very happy with the Cupshe brand and have I think 3 of their suits the oldest probably 4-5 years old. They have their own website and many are also offered on Amazon.
I bought a few swimsuit tops and bottoms last summer from Garnet Hill. Different styles, but the same print. I like having options.
I keep seeing things about lipedema and now I wonder if that’s my problem. I’ve never been able to wear tall boots of any kind as they don’t fit over my calves no matter my weight, same with most jeans - they’re skinny jeans no matter what. my knees are also fatty, and my PCP commented on my ankles a year or so ago. Bleh.
Self tanner gets me through summer and shorts season. I’ll be searching for the elusive under $60 shorts again this year, but don’t think I’ll have much success. Instead, it’s skorts/skirts and more styling of my upper half to keep the dowdy-ness to a minimum.
I got these linen shorts from Quince recently and I like them a lot.
I never used to be able to get swimsuits or tankinis from Target because they didn’t provide enough support up top. They have definitely gotten a lot better in recent years. I also have some from Cupshe that I like. I ordered three last week from Cupshe to try, and I’m hoping they arrive today, because I’m heading to the beach tomorrow.
lol, those shorts while cute would be my worst nightmare! I can’t tolerate wrinkles in my clothes! So no linen unless it is blended with another fiber to make it somewhat wrinkle resistant.
For shorter shorts, I like them to be somewhat fitted, for longer ones I like them to be more flowy.
Those look like nice shorts. Clearly the model is taller than me (all of them are). Still without trying them on not sure they’d be long enough for my preferences. A few years ago I started shifting from shorts to more dresses / skorts. Still if I would buy another pair of shorts if I found some I loved.
I’ve purchased several pairs of wider legs pants for the warmer months. I usually wear dresses in summer but wanted something I could wear my compression garments under.
I got these and I’m loving them.

Very nice!
That’s the kind of linen I’d wear!
Those are so cute!
Those are so cute! My size is sold out unfortunately.
They remind me of the marine layer pants that Facebook has been temping me with
Only click on the link if you want to be inundated with them everywhere you look!
I’m already getting tons of Marine Layer ads, I like those pants. I like the look of a lot of their clothes.
I also like these in the taupe.

I bought them at a boutique near my daughter.
Both the ZSupply and the Antro pants look great with the Nic and Zoe white t shirt that @BunsenBurner recommended.
I’ve been thinking of trying some of the ZSupply pants. They look so comfy!
The problem with the linen pants for me is a thick waistband. I don’t like that look or feel in a pair of pull up pants. I just got these in from GAP but haven’t taken them out of the package yet. I got them in petite when they were having 40% off. Looks like they are sold out of the color I got but it’s a light beige.
Has anyone bought and loved Aritzia’s lodge pants? I finally caved to the influencers and purchased a pair in the much lauded “crepette” fabric (warning: they are pricey). Spoiler alert, I hated them. The fabric is heavy and feels horrible and the cut of the pants, even though I sized down, is a baggy mess in my stomach/pelvic area. So disappointed. Maybe on tall and thin women who can do a XS or S. I wonder if the linen fabric is better? I bought them in the short length because I hate when pants drag on the floor.
Update: I didn’t like the fit of the GAP linen blend pants either (although the waistband was thin and not bulky and the short length was perfect). I guess I just don’t like an unstructured fit.
The z supply pants are too long for this petite.
I looked at the options for the Anthropologie pair but wasn’t thrilled with the available color options in the petite.
Decided to try the marine layer in a chocolate brown and a blue stripe. Although they don’t come in petites, the inseam length looked like they might work for me.
Thanks @mom60 for the suggestion and link. I think a pair of loose pants might be fun for summer.
I have mostly given up on shorts. They don’t look very good on me, and I just don’t find them comfortable. I now mostly wear linen blend flowy pants, casual skirts and dresses.
I love shorts but find that they are tricky. Even my favorite casual ones need t-shirts or tops of just the right length to look good. And that has nothing to do with my legs.
I’m thinking there might need to be some of those in my summer wardrobe this year. One beach vacation will have us walking to dinner, and last year it felt that for me shorts were too casual / dresses too formal. Also cooler walking home.
I didn’t see a blue stripe?? Did you get the pair with the curved hem that was linked above? I was wondering if that aspect would still look good/work if (when) they hit lower on my short, squatty legs . I’m VERY tempted by these, so please report back!
