Great deal!
Did you do the leg thing? ![]()
What a steal! White and blue will always catch my eye.
I did not do the leg thing! I always love blue and white and the dress is actually very flattering on me.
I love that top, but I can tell by looking that it would be too short-waisted on me. I’m too old for my tummy to show!!
Ross, Marshall’s, TJMaxx & NRack have some amazing deals for those willing to find them. Great score!
Adriana Papell also seems to have sales on holiday weekends. (I price compared her site, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s).
@CollegeNerd67 I like all the dresses you posted (for different reasons)
It’s hard to pick because it’s so unique for each person’s body type.
I’m also blonde and anything taupe or yellow isn’t for me either. I bet the various blues look great on you! The pattern is so cute in the first.
Edit to add: saw you ordered the first! Hope it works out & (if you want) you post pix!
Just curious—for folks who buy special outfits for weddings (other than when they are parents of the wedding couple), do you wear the outfits for events after the wedding? I guess my lifestyle is pretty casual and I don’t have much use for dressier outfits and I’m curious. It gives me less incentive to splurge on really fancy outfits that I don’t believe I will wear much. (I also sadly have very limited closet space, as H & I share a small closet that is getting increasingly cluttered with “stuff.”)
This is my struggle. I hate spending money on things that I will only use once (hello Poshmark). We had 3 weddings this year - each with different dress codes. I suppose I could have bought a floor-length black-tie dress (the dress code to the upcoming wedding) and just worn it to the others, but I would have looked silly (IMO). A guest at the 2nd wedding wore a bright green ball gown and stuck out (again, IMO). She looked more MOB than the MOB. The dress I bought for the 2nd wedding, I could wear again - it’s just a simple knit black off the shoulder dress. And to first wedding, which was an outdoor wedding in the woods, I wore a satin maxi skirt and a top, which I can also wear again and mix & match - but like you, other than weddings, I don’t have many dressy occasions.
I’m hoping this is my last wedding until my younger daughter gets married maybe 2-3 years from now.
I paid more for a dress to a recent wedding (with a “theme”) than I’d normally pay. I did make sure to find something I really liked and would wear again. That said, when we got there it was obvious that not everyone was as focused on the theme as I was.
My DIL also got a new dress for the wedding, and she plans to wear that same dress to 2 other weddings.
I won’t buy a dress that I won’t wear again. We do have a good number of occasions to dress up, especially for the opera, so that’s my benchmark when looking for a special occasion dress - can I wear it to the opera? If it’s a no, I won’t buy it.
I absolutely love buying dresses for special occasions. In my mind, I would like to be Miss America, a senator’s wife, or a member of the British royal family.
Rarely do I re-wear a dress that I’ve bought as a guest to a wedding. Meanwhile, IRL, I’m often slobbing around at home in very old and tired capri pants and race t-shirts.
I have gotten better about buying clothes for the life I lead rather than the life I want, but when a wedding or other special occasion comes up, I go a bit crazy.
You are my spirit animal and my role model ![]()
This is so honest and I love it! You always look so great in your fashion photos you post, I think we need a pic of the scruffy capris and race shirts! ![]()
I am not a fan of buying a one-time occasion clothing item. I dislike “fancy” clothes and will spend much more on my everyday stuff than special occasion stuff. I have no qualms about buying second hand or consignment for ANY outfit. I want to look nice but do not want to spend my $$ on high clothing bills. I can buy name brands/nice clothing for much less and I enjoy the hunt.
So if you tell me I’m invited to your occasion and I have to wear a sparkly dress with fancy shoes and a bow in my hair (haha) I’m going to be at the thrift or consignment shop or online resale site looking for that dress, those shoes and that bow!!!
Some of us don’t see our sizes in consignment shops. I wish. They just don’t have fancy dresses in my size at the consignment shops I’ve been in. Once in a while I find things at Poshmark but the fit is difficult, I would do better to buy something that I can return if it doesn’t fit.
TBH, I’m also particularly sensitive to a strong detergent smell and find it is persuasive to used clothing.
I’m trying to be better at buying for the life I’m living instead of the one I want to live lol! Saying that I have an obscene amount of golf clothes when I could wear shorts and tees to the very unfancy places I golf at!
I was just shopping with my sister, who is my all-time favorite shopping companion, and we were talking about this struggle (as I was oohing and aahing over sequins, dry-cleanable silks, etc). Our grandmother, who passed away over 30 years ago, still comes up in conversation around town, and her stylish outfits are always mentioned.
Church-going was simply an excuse to dress up.
I am open to thrifting and renting but haven’t done either. I’ve bought non-dress items off of Poshmark, and sold my MOB dress on there, but unless I know something is going to fit, I am hesitant to get an occasion dress off of Poshmark, ThredUp, etc. The sizing on occasion dresses is just too all over the place - not to mention that some brands I am liking lately are Australian and the sizing is hard to figure out if you’ve never bought anything from that brand. I need the flexibility to return.
That said, I did just order a final sale dress for the welcome party (from an aforementioned Australian brand), but it was marked way down. I’m manifesting that it will fit and if it doesn’t, to my Poshmark closet it goes!
I will admit that I still love to dress up and love an excuse to buy a pretty dress! In the summer I will put on a sundress to go to dinner, a concert or even a walk along the beach. I have upgraded my summer at home wardrobe from just jean shorts (California girl
) to casual, cute cotton dresses that I wear around the house.
Another thing that bugs me about Poshmark is that sometimes the items are just in horrible wrinkled condition in the photos - like they’ve been stuffed into a Ziplock bag for years, and I don’t want to deal with trying to steam out wrinkles.
It’s crazy the photos that some people post on Poshmark! D2 has been selling quite a few things this year on Poshmark. She steams all of her clothes before taking photos and makes sure to take pictures in good light.
