Dressing Young (Part 1)

Right now I could give a hoot if I am dressing young. My only goal is to be dressing cool. Had a TON of errands to do today and it is hot as Hades out there!

My idea of style right now is loose clothing, flip flops, and hair in a scrunchie. OH, and an extra dab of sunscreen & deodorant as I head out the door.

I just got back from a hearing and a very senior attorney from the northeast was wearing what HAD to be a man’s suit. It was horrible. I am one who likes tailored jackets and pants, but this looked like she was playing dress-up in her daddy’s clothes. The jacket was long and baggy and so were the trousers. She had a tailored shirt and a big floppy scarf (waist length) for a tie. She was in her late 50s. It was truly awful.

Toneranger,

My shopping cart is at $2,000 but my credit card remains safely out of reach. I am virtual shopping. It is strangely soothing. And I pat myself on the back for not actually spending any money.

MOWC, this sounds like a woman who is obsessed with Annie Hall. Wearing men’s clothes can work, I guess. But you need to be built like Diane Keaton - really tall and willowy and sort of adorable in the big guy clothes.

Still, you have to admire someone doing their thing like that. Maybe if she’d get herself a rhinestone toy watch the look would really click.

I picked up this top at Target on Monday. On me at least it seems a little low cut, but it sure was nice in this heat! Hope I’m not dressing too young! But it was nice to actually fit in the “small” after working on losing weight for the last six months.

I wore a man’s suit last Halloween, and was impressed with how bad it looked on me! (Now my husband in fishnet stockings and a lavender prom dress…) I agree the Annie Hall look is not a good one on most people.

I find those contact lenses strangely attractive, but I haven’t worn contacts in 20 years or more.

I don’t think this woman was going for style. She was very plain. I think this might be her idea of professional dress for women. She even had mannish shoes on. I used to love the Annie Hall look, but it is hard to properly pull off wearing clothes that don’t fit…:)

hey wait…she WAS in style. Although I’m guessing she didn’t look like Brooklyn Decker

LOL-I do this all the time. My Amazon ‘save for later’ is about 10 pages long! Sometimes I go through it and wonder ‘what was I thinking’?

Unfortunately, the stores are full of oversized “boyfriend” jackets now. They remind me of those shapeless sacks people used to wear in the early 90s.

I wish I could have taken a picture. It was one of those looks where you say to yourself, “Well, that’s back in style, so I’ll dig into the back of my closet and bring out what I wore when I was 50 pounds heavier back in 1970!”

MOWC I’ve seen that mannish look…I think you are correct and that was her interpretation of business. Somehow got lost between the suits and floppy ties of the early 80s and today. I had a few suits in my closet with those big boxy jackets. They were expensive but I finally gave them away several years ago. I do see this look. I’m in a new office and it’s interesting we have the fashionistas whose motto is wear whatever is in regardless, we have the I love my capris and I’ve never giving them up and sometimes I even like to wear them with pumps and on Friday I’ll wear them with my Keens, and we have the earth mommas with the long skirts, gladiator sandals and big necklaces. It’s fun people watching and fascinating. My old office was all Talbots all the time. It agree it’s tough when it’s 90+ degrees outside, I’ve been doing sleeveless dresses and brining a jacket to toss on when inside the office.

Nordstrom anniversary sale alert! It starts on July 16. I got my preview catalog today. There are several styles of Not Your Daughter’s Jeans that will be on sale for those who like that brand.

Have to say Brooklyn Decker is adorable in those men’s suits but they look like very expensive and well tailored men’s suits and she, of course, could make anything look terrific.

I bought this at J Crew last weekend. It hits me longer than in the picture and it’s really cool and crisp but I’m afraid it might be too young for me. Should I give it to my daughter?

NO! It would only be “too young” if it were “too short.” Wear it and enjoy it!

A salesperson at Nordstrom told me that Tory Burch is currently one of the favorite brands of thirty-plus youngsters. A lady shopping for her adult daughter at the NM confirmed this. So if you want to dress younger, wear Tory Burch. :)

I’ve looked at pictures of the fall collections of some designers, and if what I’ve seen so far is the general trend, I’ll be a happy shopper this fall. Lots of classic styles and very nice, rich colors: brown, camel, burgundy, beige… Most other clothes makers follow the trends set by the “big dogs”, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. There is always a room in my closet for another pencil skirt (or two  ).

Love my new summer flats from Target! Thank you, Bookiemom, for the great tip! With the long awaited summer finally coming to our neck of the woods, I’m not yet ready to shop for fall clothes. But the stores already cleared out most of the summer stuff :(

It’s amazing what you can find at Target! So glad you found some flats there, Bunsen. The ones I bought will work in the fall too. And soooo much cheaper than the Tory Burch flats on the back cover of the Nordstrom sale catalog!

anyone considering hitting Nordstrom tomorrow? I am conflicted between we don’t need anything now but we could very well need boots or coats in Dec. Plus with my weight loss I might consider another pair of Joe’s jeans.

I will definitely make a stop at the flagship store on my way to work! DH needs dress pants and new shoes. I already know what I will need to look for - Ecco shoes called… Seattle  No kidding.

I spent too much on the female members of the Bunsen household, so I will skip the upper floors. Maybe a tiny peek just to take a quick look :)

Lots of goodies at the Garnet Hill sale:

DD got a little dress, shorts and two tanks at Target yesterday - total bill $42!!

Yes, I plan to hit Nordstrom today. It’ll be my annual July visit. Only time I go there all year.
