Dressing Young (Part 1)

Do you have any turquoise jewelry? I always think that’s western looking.

I like MoWC’s suggestion. I would buy a blue chambray shirt, an inexpensive red scarf or should I say bandana and pick up an inexpensive cowboy hat for fun. I love hats so I could pull that part off.

What is the ruling on turquoise? I like turquoise jewelry, but somehow I wouldn’t use that with my country outfit.

toneranger - good too hear from you!!!

I have to wonder if we are all so used to seeing young women who look like Snookie, that something like the yellow dress automatically looks very dated or too young. I think I may be biased because I always loved my very similar yellow dress ( from the 70s - I wasn’t even 20) - it brought me good luck whenever i wore it. And I don’t think I have owned anything with puffed sleeves since the 80s! Nevertheless, I thought it was a very pretty dress - deceivingly sophisticated and I didn’t think the sleeves were all that extreme, especially if you have seen some of what is coming for the fall. I did think it was perhaps a tiny bit short in the torso for her, though.

Toneranger, I asked a similar question about a year ago ( post 2350, not logged in -page 157) when I was invited to a rodeo and reception for a business related event and got a lot of great suggestions, so you might want to go back and check it out. I ultimately wore a very lightweight chambray western type shirt, lightweight white boot cut jeans and short western style boots since long pants, long sleeves, boots and as it turned out a cowboy hat (!) were required to visit the chutes. For just a party in the summer, I might consider my Jack Rogers sandals western looking enough, since I own a pair already. Surprisingly, though, just as everyone assured me last year, the boots were very comfortable, even with temps in the 80s.

Toneranger it’s so hot here, I’d be tempted to wear a jeans vest with no shirt if I had one! But I agree a bandana can do a lot. Maybe a westernish belt too?

Wow! Hit it big at the summer clearance sales at MOA today! Got D2 a pair of white True religion jeans and a regular pair of J Brand jeans for under $100 each! The clearance items were all at least another 40% off the markdown price. Then found the cutest gold metallic Coach flats for her at the Rack. Today is her birthday and I was just going to get one thing…she will be happy I got lots more! She wore these shoes http://www.dsw.com/shoe/impo+tipper+espadrille+wedge?prodId=219098&productRef=SEARCH</a> to her sister’s bridal shower this weekend with a purple dress and everyone loved them. I couldn’t wear them but everyone wanted to know where she got them.

My little yellow chiffon dress had a big bow in the back, of course. And the same fabric covered buttons as Kate’s. It must be the buttons that just sends me . . .

I don’t know about turquoise for country theme. It’s more Indian/southwestern. I also love it and wear it, but not really for country/honky tonk. Silver cuff would be better. Or braided leather.

NorthMinnesota,
Congratulations on the great finds–too bad I’m nowhere near MOA! What stores had the J Brand jeans on sale? My Ds and I all love J Brand–so comfortable and flattering!

OK…wow…great ideas. I don’t own a pair of cowboy boots so I’ll skip those. But a fitted chambray shirt with a bandanna - with my (tight) white pants, Maybe I can find a belt with a western buckle. Like it. We’ll see about the hat…I would have to be in the mood! Not sure about what to wear on my feet but not gonna stress about it. Oh geez…hope there isn’t line dancing stuff.
Nice to be on here again…feels like I’m hearing from long lost friends!

toneranger, the hat is essential. Can’t go western without the hat.

Now, back to my meditation on my little yellow chiffon Easter dress . . .

NMinn, your D’s shoes look a bit like the Signature CC Sperry wedges. The tie around the ankle design adds a pinch of novelty and cuteness, I guess!

Sewhappy, I too liked the yellow dress. Many, many moons ago I had a similar looking dress - it was made of turquoise-blue silk chiffon.

Toneranger, go with what MOfWC says, she is our Dressing Young country wear expert with many years of experience. :)

NMinn, your D is a fashionista for sure. Ikat espadrille wedges? The trifecta of summer 2001:).

ordered a not so expensive cowboy hat from amazon and a bandanna. Free shipping. Hope the hat fits!
Thanks all!! Just wish I could convince myself to like country…would much rather listen to Katie Perry or Pink…lol.

I was just up in Montana and met a woman at a very posh party who was dressed in an upscale country outfit - sort of hard to describe but she looked great. When I admired her cowboy boots (which were elaborately carved) she laughed and tugged at her pants leg. They were actually mules but the front of the shoe and the heel looked exactly like western boots. Oh, and she was from Texas.

I can see what you mean about turquoise not being country but I was thinking more along the line of ranches and so forth. You know, cowboys, Indians, turquoise…

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with mixing it up a bit. ^^^^^

As for the mules, funny you should say that. I have a pair of dansko shoes that look like boots when I wear them with jeans. People have told me they like my “boots.”

collage1…Bloomingdales had J Brand on sale.

These are the shoes I wear with jeans in the winter and are mistaken for boots

workinprogress,

I have those Beth Danskos in black and love them on ice in the winter. Dansko soles have the best tread I’ve ever found on a slippery surface. Also, they have just enough elevation to keep my socks dry.

OK…well I’m not gonna buy new shoes or boots just for this party. Already spent on a hat and a bandanna (didn’t have either on hand). I have lots of flip flops and ballerina flats but I’m guessing that won’t cut it for a western outfit. I do have some bright silver flats so maybe that’s what I’ll go with…or is that crazy?
