Dressing Young (Part 1)

Packer, first of all, congratulations! That is a very elegant MOG dress. IMO, a nice sandal or a d’orsay would look better with this dress than a pump. I assume that a November wedding will be held indoors, so sandals should be perfectly fine to wear. I’d go for something silver or sparkly (like the colors of the beading), like this:

I hope the CC DY ladies will post their thoughts, too.

What is your price range?

Packer,

That is a very elegant gown. The hand beading in the bodice is a wonderful detail. What is the color palette for the wedding? I think certainly a black shoe, not a t-strap sandal but something more formal and perhaps with some sparkle or beading. But this is the domain of the true shoe experts here - Bunsen, Alumother and of course the venerable GourmetMom.

With the cap sleeves and neckline, you will be able to have some fun, I would think, with jewelry. From the picture, it looks as if there is just a hint of blue/green in the beading?

The dress is a really nice palette for you to take in an interesting and beautiful direction.

Congratulations on son’s wedding! The dress also looks comfortable and as if you will be able to really enjoy the occasion.

Packer, love the dress. I think I’d go with BunsenBurner’s suggestion of a sparkly shoe.

Thank you! Love the comments! I think the Jimmy Choo’s are out of my budget, but I like the style of those and like the others as well. Now I have a start as to what to look for.

Yes, the wedding is indoors and we are in the midwest.

Here’s another opinion just to confuse you. I think I’d go with a silver sandal or open toe slingback. Wouldn’t do a closed shoe with that dress. Since the dress has some glitter going on already, if it were me, I would opt to let that be the focal point and would go fairly simple but elegant on the shoe.

Correction - I meant to say if it was me I wouldn’t do a pump, not closed toe. Closed toe could certainly be pretty, too. Here are more in lower heeled silver including a couple that might not break the budget:

roshke, I think you and I are pretty much on the same page: silver, with a bit of sparkle, but not bling-y. Sandal of some sorts, open toe pump, or closed toe (but not a pump). Silver is an easy color to find these days, so there should be some good options with lower heels.

Packer - what an elegant dress. I love that color.

Well, I am back from my stepdaughter’s wedding. The bride looked spectacular, the venue was really amazing, and everything went smoothly.

I was very happy I wore the black and cream dress. The ceremony and reception were held here

[Carnegie Institution of Washington - Washington, DC](<a href=“Project Wedding is Now WeddingWire - WeddingWire.com”>Project Wedding is Now WeddingWire - WeddingWire.com)

and I actually liked the tuxedo look of my dress better than the spectacular floral I considered. It was very dressy without looking like I was trying to be part of the wedding party. Thanks for your advice during my indecisive, neurotic stage!!

Packer - Peep toe! Peep toe! And if you wanted to go mad, mad, mad you could wear a sparkly shoe with some blue/green going on. If you wanted to take a more sedate route, black satin. In that case, to leaven the sobriety, black satin strappy sandals would look nice. It’s a great dress. Kudos.

workinprogress – how did the ee cummings go?

I think your choice of dress was feminine and strong at the same time.

Alumother – I thought blue/green would also be wild and fun for Packer but was too timid to suggest it. Personally, I’m just tired of silver sandals. Not sure why, but DD and I seem to accumulate them. I also think black satin with just a single dramatic festoon of sparkles or beads would be good.

Excited to talk jewelry for Packer. Those sleeves seem to call out for a bracelet or really gorgeous watch.

wnp - thank you for your wedding report! I’m happy that everything went well, and your dress was perfect for the venue and the occasion.

LOL, sewhappy, I’m just the opposite - I swore that I would never buy another pair of black footwear! I though of green or turquoise sparkly shoes, but something that would match Packer’s price range and heel height would be fairly hard to find, so that’s why I suggested sparkly silver.

Since I’m a jewelry minimalist (the old lab rat’s habits are hard to break), I’ll be of no help to Packer in this area. Anyone wants to tackle this task? :)

Workinprogress- thanks for the report.
I finally bought a new swimsuit. I did try on the floral Tommy bahama suit I have been looking at online for months. They didn’t have my size but after trying on one that was a bit small I did realize that the suit did nothing for my body. I ended up with this La Blanca suit [La Blanca ‘A New Twist’ One Piece Swimsuit | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/la-blanca-a-new-twist-one-piece-swimsuit/3215128?origin=PredictiveSearch&resultback=488) It is not exactly “young” but it is figure flattering and makes me look like I have a bit of a chest. The funny thing was going shopping with my 17 yr old. She kept encouraging me to try younger looking clothes on. At one point she wanted me to buy a certain dress so she could borrow it. I declined along with the tight fitting Hudson jeans she felt I absolutely should buy! The rise was tooo low for me.

LOL, Mom60! My D has lately been lamenting that she will never be my size (she’s 3-4 inches shorter & about 30 pounds lighter). She says that her friends can sometimes share clothes with sibs or their parents but not she & I. Oh well, we can at least share jewelry (when I’m convinced she won’t lose any of my good pieces). :)

That’s a cute swimsuit! Glad you found something that you like.

I love all the input I’m getting. I’m leaning towards silver sandals or peep toe pumps. I don’t think there is enough green sparkle in the dress to go with a green colored shoe.

Do I “need” a necklace? I know I will want a bracelet of some sort. And earrings.

Sewhappy, the poem went well. I have directed youth productions at church so I am a stickler about pacing, emphasis, etc., when speaking. One thing that helped was I decided to SAY it was a poem by e.e.cummings, which helped because it signaled to the audience that this was not going to flow like a normal prayer or text.

Packer - I would consider going without a necklace and just focusing on a great bracelet and earrings. The neckline on the dress is so beautiful it just might stand alone. I saw these pieces (the sapphire ones) when I was looking for some costume jewelry for my outfit and they really are much nicer than they look in the photos. Lots of department stores carry Givenchy - which translates to buying when some kind of coupon offer is available.

Bon-Ton

Which e e cummings poem was it?

Oh, it sounds like the ee Cummings went wonderfully. It’s interesting how subtle aspects of a public utterance make all the difference in the world. My DH has to give talks often and has learned that over the years.

Mom60 - that is a wonderful swimsuit. love the color and the style. I want one!

Sewhappy, that is so true. The nicest compliments I received were from a couple of people who were familiar with the poem and who said the reading helped them understand it a little better. I had “cheated” of course, by listening to a recording of e.e. himself reading the poem, just to make sure I had it right.

Packer - we cross posted earlier & I am happy to hear you are also think the neckline of the dress serves as a necklace.

Swimsuits - ok. So guess what miss boring wears? Tank suits, usually from TYR. Mom60 - I love the suit you posted!!!

mom60, fabulous suit! Fabulous. And it looks like you got it on sale, too.

I read somewhere that the current trend is no necklace if the dress has some beading or sparkles near the neckline. As I said, I’m no jewelry expert, but IMO this would work well for Packer - her dress’ beadwork is amazing. Let’s see what Alumother has to say about jewelry.

worknprogress2, Congrats on your stepDs wedding and on getting there in style. I am sure you looked just great in your dress. What a stunning venue!

Thinking about packer’s dress some more, especially since I just bought a navy dress myself. They definitely show tons of black with navy these days, but the silver and blue beading on the gown made me originally hesitate to suggest black in this case. But alumother is right -I looked at some similar gowns online (when in doubt you can always check out the better department store websites for trends in accessories) and I see that a black silk strappy or peep toe shoe could also make for a great choice. With black shoes, I’d be inclined to carry a pewter or silver clutch. With silver or pewter sandals or shoes I’d keep them simple to avoid competing with the bling in the dress. Personally would not go for a bright color or a shoe that’s too embellished or glittery with all that’s already going on in the dress. I would definitely opt for not wearing a necklace, agree that the neckline stands on it’s own. The dress looks very classic and classy - I have to say would never have guessed the price point!
