Dressing Young (Part 1)

worknprogress2, I have similar shaped feet! In fact the Anne Klein iflex brand seems to be the only style ballet flat I can fit into where my heel doesn’t come out. I do often have to put a pad down under the ball of my foot too, to keep my foot in place.

booklady - I agree! Anne Klein iFlex also makes a great cute kitten type heel that is very comfortable.

Alum - I think I need to do a road trip! There are a couple of shoes in their fall collection that look great. I know I could always order and send back, but I really need to try shoes on and get an idea how a brand fits. Thanks for the tip!

I’ve been looking for some flats to wear with my skinny pant outfits, but my huge problem is that my feet rebel against heel-less flats. I needed something with a bit of a heel, preferably, a wedge, and J Crew had something that met my needs! These flats are amazingly comfy (and made in Italy):

I might get another pair in beige! There’s also some fall clothing at J Crew that looks great - lots of cashmere and tweed “boyfriend” jackets and coats.

Ooooh, thanks for the shoe tips. I am a 9.5 M width, AAAA heel (used to be AA width before kids, sigh). Flats just do not work for me, either.

I have the wide toe box, narrow heel (and high arch) issue as well. Finding shoes that are both comfortable and that I also like is an ongoing challenge. There must be a lot of untapped market potential out there!

With ballets, I use the Foot Petals, which they sell at Nordstrom and elsewhere. Depending on the shoe, I sometimes use them along the sides rather than straight across the back. The other trick is to buy shoes in moldable fabrics like suede or soft leather as opposed to stiff patent etc. A good shoe repair place can also stretch the toe area if there’s just one tight area.

A trend I like is the “smoking slipper.” It’s like a loafer or a ballet flat that comes down further over the top of the foot. It keeps my foot in place better than some classic ballets. They are very versatile and go quite well with skinny pants.

roshke - high arch? CHECK.

Surfcity: I have that pair of Frye boots and absolutely LOVE them. Originally D purchased this style and was raving about the Frye quality. After shopping around for a bit I chose the same style and now that it’s cooler, I wear them all the time.

I also own several pairs of these [Ariat Heritage III Zip Paddock H20 Black - Zappos.com Free Shipping BOTH Ways](<a href=“Ariat heritage iii zip paddock h20 black ariat + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Ariat heritage iii zip paddock h20 black + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com)

Bought the original pair for riding and found them so comfortable that they became my go-to shoes. They last forever, are beyond comfortable, go with skinny jeans, skirts, boot leg pants and long sweaters with leggings. I’ve received endless compliments on both the Frye’s and the Ariat’s.

As for socks…Costco has their seasonal wool and/or silk blends in stock. I stocked up on Wigwams and KB -Merino wool sets. Both are very comfortable when worn with boots - no toe seam.

I’ve got my eye on these, although the heel maybe just a bit to high for my all day comfort

Dietz199, love those Frye boots! Question? Do the Ariat boots fit pretty true to size? Thinking of picking up a pair. Not that I need to buy anything :/

I’ve been looking at smoking slippers. So cute. I even think I could get away with wearing thin socks with them in winter. The only problem is that where I live we get a lot of snow. So if I’m not wearing snow boots, everyone takes off their shoes so cute winter shoes are a waste. But how I love shoes.

You can sometimes find better prices for Ariat boots in tack stores or online tack stores. Check Dover Saddlery and [Horse Tack | Equestrian Supplies | Horse Supply | Horse Tack Stores Horse Tack Co.](http://www.horsetackco.com). I think they’re at Dover now for $109. I like the lace up paddock boots better than the zip because I have a high arch so they are more comfortable for me. The Ariat Terrain, more of a hiking type boot, is also very comfortable.

The Melissa Frye Boots are sublime. And I’m not a boot girl.

So any suggestions for what I should wear tomorrow night? A party for parents from our high school with kids who are in freshmen year of college. Really fun crowd. Always enjoy them. Dressy casual. I want to wear a really good pair of DKNY leggings, my black patent leather “dress” Dansko clogs and this Boden top that always makes me happy but my DH says gives him a headache:

[Fab Jersey Tunic WL659 Tunics at Boden](http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Clearance/Womens-Tunics/WL659/Womens-Fab-Jersey-Tunic.html)

DH also does not see the charm in Dansko clogs. But I know I’ll be standing all night and I don’t want throbbing feet. I actually like the look of clogs with leggings. I have very small feet and I think it can be fine.

Thoughts?

No time to order anything. Who would carry a nice silky form-fitting tunic in a print or solid that won’t cause trouble in my marriage? :)

Tell hubby to take two tylenol and wear the top! It looks like a party top to me!

Deb922- I wear a 7 1/2 or 8. My Ariats are 8’s. They were snug at first but did stretch a bit. When they begin to wear down I’ll remove the original insole and replace it with a new orthotic type.

Also, these arrived today http://www.zappos.com/frye-carmen-harness-short-burnt-red</a>. I’m not completely sold. I’m surprised how comfortable they are given their - in my opinion - high heel. What I’m not so sure about is their ‘gap’ at the calf. They are also much more ‘cowboy’ than the Melissa’s. I’ll sleep on it…but I know D loves them and I’m keeping her pair for under the Christmas tree.

You actually might be able to run into Target and look for something in their Merona line…

Alumother, I like that suggestion. I got this yesterday at J Jill after finding nothing I liked anywhere else at the local mall:

[Women’s apparel, accessories, and footwear from J. Jill](http://www.jjill.com/jjillonline/product/itempage.aspx?BID=311501556&PFID=533&item=9T044B&h=M&sk=N)

I’m not that happy with it and I think of party clothes as the part of my budget to have fun and not spend much. I like Merona and also the Mossimo line at Target. Will check it out and have saved my J Jill receipt. :)

Ive been wearing Ariats for years since oldest needed paddock boots.
i especially love my cowboy boots. Best thing about the weather changing!
i have a high arch and they are very comfortable( wSuperfeet insoles), and have good traction, ( i dont like leather soles)

Sew happy- I love that Boden dress but I know my H would not like it. He also doesn’t like the look of Dansko clogs. While I love color and print I rarely wear them, my natural reaction would be to wear the JJill top.
My goal this past year has been to step outside my comfort zone. I would wear what you are comfortable in.
Workinprogress- once again another sign that we must be related. Narrow heal and wide toe box.

Check SmartPak Equine, too. Cheaper than Dover and there’s free shipping for all orders over $75 (Dover’s shipping prices are ridiculous).

Wore the J Jill tunic WITH the black patent Danskos and felt fine. The hostess was wearing purple patent Danskos, btw.

I think a lot of us are rebelling against shoe styles that hurt.

[Talbots - Moni Tweed Pointy-Toe Bow Flat | Flats | Medium](<a href=“Women's Clothing & Apparel | Talbots”>Women's Clothing & Apparel | Talbots)

Bought these cute flats yesterday. Just enough heel–1 inch. I’m thinking the tweed will go with lots of outfits this fall…

^^ Nice shoes. Really cute! For some unexplained reason, I’ve become a fan of tweed lately.
