Dressing Young (Part 1)

Some choices from Bloomie’s:

Of course, Burberry makes fantastic coats, bu they are oh so expensive!

Great ideas, Bunsen. We have a Bloomingdale’s here, so that may be my next stop. Thanks.

Alumother, I have that same J Crew skirt except in blues/greens. I’m trying to figure out what shoes to wear. Are you going to go with neutral colored shoes like the model is wearing in the photo? I always have the worst time finding shoes that look good with my outfits!

I usually have the opposite problem - finding an outfit to go with my shoes :)

I’m looking for a denim jacket to replace the ones expropriated by the younger generation. This is the jacket that I like a lot, but just can’t justify paying this much for it:

[Current/Elliott ‘The Snap’ Stretch Denim Jacket | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/current-elliott-the-snap-stretch-denim-jacket/3036839?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=0)

Has anyone seen anything similar with a less shocking price tag? All suggestions are appreciated!

BB:

That jacket appears to be a twist on the classic Levi’s Trucker jacket:

Here are their offerings. $78

Looks like they’ve got it in several shades of stretch denim. Hard to go wrong with Levi’s for classic denim stuff.

Book lady, I think this is too short and I have not been a big fan of Lands End wool coats but there is just something about this coat [Women’s Luxe Wool Swing Car Coat from Lands’ End](http://www.landsend.com/pp/womens-luxe-wool-swing-car-coat~243894_59.html)

I was chatting with a friend the other day - a well-dressed, stylish woman in her early 50s. She was telling me about a little jacket she just bought, and she said, “It’s perfect to just throw whenever because we can’t wear denim jackets anymore.” What??? She got me thinking - is this true? Does a short denim jacket look too young on 50+?

This is a post from a blog that I read. I think this outfit is so cute and she’s definitely dressing young.
I don’t have a demin jacket but I did buy a demin shirt to wear. Where I live jackets just aren’t practical, there is not much opportunity to have weather to wear such an item. I did see a cute one at Penny’s of all places. The only thing I buy there are cami’s and pj’s.

Say it ain’t so!! Gourmetmom, I hope the ban on 50 somethings wearing a trusty denim jacket is NOT true! I’d be lost without mine! Got it a few years ago at Gap, complete with a 75% discount.

I wear it with lots of different outfits and have recently been wearing a broach with mine…I saw a faux turquoise pin at a chain store recently, commented about it and another nearby customer remarked how cute it would look on a denim jacket. I bought it, promptly went home and attached it to my very own jacket! It looks great~

Thanks for the blog link, deb922. That look is very attractive!

I like how denim jackets look but not how they feel. Too stiff of fabric for me.

Same with the lovely wool dress coats. They are gorgeous, have purchased some but ended up rarely wearing. I’m realizing I like coats in supple fabrics that don’t weigh me down.

deb, that coat might be just the ticket, except that it doesn’t come in grey! I would get black, but I have so many black clothes, and lint becomes an issue. The search continues…

I would wear a denim jacket. But I had a recent experience with Levis that made me sad. I’m now delving into raw and selvedge denim, at least a research phase:). And I wear the purple tweed skirt with black pumps and a purple cashmere sweater. I would also wear it with some pink-red kitten heels, if I weren’t walking to work. Remember, there’s no shame in black shoes.

Booklady, here it is in charcoal tweed. [Women’s Pattern Wool Swing Car Coat from Lands’ End](http://www.landsend.com/pp/StylePage-419281_AE.html?amp;CM_MERCH=REC-_-FPPP-_-GGT-_-1-_-419281-_-419381)

Wait for one of their sales. They just had 30% off everything and free shipping. I never buy anything from Lands End full price, they have sales all the time.

I’m hoping they upgraded their wool coats. I have down coats from there and I am very pleased but a friend bought a duffel coat and I was not pleased with the quality. But the price point is higher so I’m hoping they upgraded the quality.

I bought a Kenneth Cole military styled wool coat at the end of last year. Looking forward to wearing it. I’m with BB, love the Burberry coats. So stylish and timeless.

I have a denim jacket from Eddie Bauer that needs replacing, I like it because it comes in petite, although they usually have more color choices.
[Classic Jean Jacket | Eddie Bauer](<a href=“Page Not Found”>Page Not Found)

The EB jacket isn’t as slim fitting or as cropped looking as the Levi’s jacket, so I think it is more flattering. I wear it with a micro fleece hoodie or a sweater underneath, and never wear it with other denim, but usually with a floral dress to soften it up.

I have several jean jackets, as that style seems to suit me. In different materials though, one that is uncut corduroy with a fleece lining, dark blue velvet, & a spring green suede. I even used to have one that was fur lined.

The quote of the day - love it!

I have a dark denim jacket (traditional jean jacket cut) by Burberry that I adore - it looks great with khakis and a white tee. The only sign of Burberry is the pale nova check lining, so it’s really classic and plain. I’m still going to wear it, just not around my friend ;)

Thanks for the suggestions! The beauty of that C/E jacket is in the fabric - it is sooooo soft! I might bite the bullet and just buy one. No denim jackets for ladies over 50 - definitely not so in the wild West! :)

Ohhh, love Alumother’s line about black shoes!

If the denim jacket makes you happy, go ahead and wear it; give 'em something to talk about! Such rules are crazy!

And I like the idea of putting a brooch on a denim jacket–sets it apart from the rest. (I always think of Madeline Albright when I think about brooches–she had a collection of pins given to her by heads of stat all over the world…)
Thanks for that suggestion, beil.

I should be easy enough to find the LEVI’s version with easy or free returns. So, maybe buy them both and see if there’s any difference. The two pair of stonewashed 501 jeans I bought were soft right off the rack, although these are not stretch denim.

On the flip side, one of my favorite pants ever was an old pair of faded softened black jeans. Unfortunately, new black jeans are not stonewashed. I picked up a pair at the LLBEAN outlet in my size and length for $19 and have been religiously washing and drying them with every load since. After about a dozen washes, at least I can start wearing them…

I do like the look of a denim jacket and have bought some but just can’t stand the feel of denim around my neck and shoulders. :(

This past spring and summer I wore this very soft denim fabric shirt over camisoles and tees and felt fine:

I’m considering a corduroy jacket from Sundance for this fall. I’m not big on corduroy pants but I like the plushness of this jacket:

[COUNTRYSIDE CORDUROY JACKET - Jackets & Blazers - Outerwear - Women | Robert Redford’s Sundance Catalog](http://www.sundancecatalog.com/product/womens+clothing/womens+outerwear/womens+jackets/countryside+corduroy+jacket.do?sortby=ourPicks)

I like corduroy. ([it was my favorite for a while, but now it’s back to Porch.]( YouTube) )
I also like cord jeans, they are so warm! Corduroy doesn’t stay good looking that long though, not more than a couple years depending on how often you wear it.
But I agree it makes cute jackets, ( hmm speaking of corduroy, I have a trench somewhere around here, it is getting cold enough to drag it out) not this one but I like this color
