Dressing Young (Part 1)

Well hello! You can absolutely wear black shoes with navy. Just make sure the navy is light enough that it doesn’t look like mismatched shades of black! Navy tights will most likely worst best, but, again, check your mirror;). Thank you BB for remembering me.

I too see young men with brown shoes and navy suits. I always thought it was because they didn’t own black dress shoes LOL so maybe it is just generational.

I always had my boys buy dark brown shoes with their suits. Now I’m going to have to see what DH puts on. I agree with @Alumother that only black shoes or boots if the skirt is a lighter navy, which often is not the case. I guess I think brown looks better…the contrast in the colors.

Recalling this thread to ask for help finding a dark brown/chocolate cardigan. Seems brown isn’t a popular color this season. I admit I haven’t done an exhaustive search but thought if one of you fashionistas sees one as a result of your Cyper Monday shopping spree, you might give me a heads-up. Looking for something moderately priced—would prefer a fiber other than cashmere but might consider it.

Thinking of something along these lines: http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=51420&vid=1&pid=304183032

Thanks!

I like the BR sweaters with the touch of cashmere in it. They didn’t have them at local store, but I would order on line. The all wool sweaters are just not as soft.

Agree, bookworm. Just wish they had it in chocolate brown!

I would steer clear of cheaper cashmere because of its general poor quality (pilling and shrinking are very common). NM cashmere is pretty good. Would any of the brown cardigans here work?

I like the longer cardigans that @Bunsen posted in the above link as compared to the shorter button down originally linked. Think they have a much younger appeal to them.

I agree that longer is more youthful, but here’s a cardigan.

None of the NM cardis are available in chocolate brown. Macy’s offers the right color, but I’m afraid it might look cheap! Grrr… Basic brown seems easy----Not so much!

I was looking at a different cardigan at Macy’s which comes in brown http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/august-silk-crew-neck-cardigan?ID=364044&CategoryID=260#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D32%26ruleId%3D79|BS%26slotId%3D4%26kws%3Daugust%20silk but was also uncertain about the quality. I was at the mall yesterday, tried it on, and bought it. It’s very soft and seems well made.

Does anybody else see the irony in a thread titled “dressing young” talking about cardigans 568 pages in?

It’s like the thread itself grew old and went from spandex to cardigans…

Well let’s switch it back. At 57, I just bought some over the knee boots this fall. Black suede! It took a little persuading from DH, but I think they look great. I wear with dresses. I haven’t worn them with jeans yet. Anybody else have them?

I don’t have them @conmama but I have plenty of friends who do. If I wore tall boots I would consider them.

I have a really hard time finding tall boots that fit me. I’m short with skinny calves. Everything is either huge around the calves or hits me in a funny place. It’s been frustrating.

Maybe I should try a pair of over the knee boots. I think they look great.

Personally, I don’t think that cardigans are that dressing old. My D wears them, she lives in the northeast and it gets cold.

We weren’t discussing Alfred Dunner clothing

I have a pair of black leather over the knee boots. They zip up the back but have no other embellishment. I’ve only worn them a couple of times with skinny jeans. I do wonder if they’re too young for me so I tend to shy away. Now that winter is here again, I need to retrieve them from the back of my closet and see if I’m up for wearing them again.

I am 5’9", so your over the knee boots are at my knee, lol. I have a pair, though, and I love them. Knee-height boots hit me at mid calf and do not look flattering. It’s like I stole a pair of kid’s boots.

I like to wear them with leggings and a tunic sweater. I also have a hard time finding one long enough. Giraffes!

I like tall boots. It finally turned “cold” and I noticed last week that the young women were wearing boots, leggings and tunics that came to the top of the thigh. They looked cute and made me wish I was in my twenties and could wear something like that to the office. I don’t think i would wear a tunic, I just don’t think it’s age appropriate for someone who is 60 regardless of the fact that I could pull lit off shape/size-wise…but I will wear my boots, leggings and skirts or dresses and cashmere cardis or turtlenecks and save my tunics and leggings for the weekends.

Can someone tell me where to find the @alumother blog?
