Any suggestions for graduation dresses for mother of the graduate (54, 5’8", 140)? Not too frilly.
I’m liking Lafayette 148 dresses this spring. They are flattering, comfortable, and age appropriate while looking stylish. The fabric is wrinkle free and packs well - good for any weather and sitting in all day.
I have five graduations to attend, so I bought three dresses, including one with a matching lightweight coat. This brand runs large - I’m about the same size as @chinablue (5’7" 135) and I wear a small. Also, look at Saks, Bloomingdales, and Nordstrom - much of the spring line is going on sale.
That fuchsia bergdorf dress does not look like a 1600 dress. The sleeves are out of proportion, and the lace looks cheap. Sometimes I just don’t get it. I’ve tried on 2k dresses that the price point made sense (hours and hours of workmanship went into it, along with amazing fabric), but that one, meh.
I like the fuchsia dress. Lela Rose is one of my favorite dress designers - I have at least a dozen of her dresses, some well over ten years old that are still wearable because they are timeless. The construction and fabric quality is tippy top. Maybe the photo doesn’t do it justice, but in person, Lela dresses do look like a cut above.
IMO, the photo just does not give Lela Rose any justice. It does look like a $25 knockoff in that photo. I have no ide what is going at Bergdorf, but their photography is not on par with the merchandise they carry. Agree with Gourmetmom - LR’s dresses are extremely well-made, and any fabric she uses will be top notch.
I like both the dresses that @Gourmetmom linked. It’s a style that works well for my body type. I don’t own any Lela Rose dresses but I’ve seen them in stores and they are pretty and of good quality.
I really like the second Lafayette dress. The brand does run large; I have to get size 2 for myself (no, I am not that small).
@chinablue - can you tell us more about your preferred styles and maybe give us some size and price range guidance?

Bought these today but at Nordstrom where they were on sale. These are my first pair of knit athletic shoes. I’m considering trying them on with my two skort purchases. I think they might look okay for when I’m doing a lot of walking. Am I crazy?
I’d wear those shoes with skorts. Super cute. Fly knits are so comfortable
They look fine & comfy, @mom60. If you’re crazy, I am too! I like comfort, especially to encourage as much walking as possible.
That professor is so chic. #lifegoals
I had a pretty depressing run through the flagship Nordie’s today. Not counting the unpleasant encounter with a very annoying lady and her slobbering dog, the merch was very unremarkable. Even the higher end clothing’s quality went downhill. Has anyone sale been annoyed by this? Shoes are my last bastion… At least the Manolos I found on sale were top notch.
I never seem to find what I want at the price point I want. Things look too matronly throughout a lot of the store. I find tops in the Jr. Dept. Sometimes. I have better luck finding clothes I like from Nordstrom online.
I had not heard of the knit athletic shoes till a couple of days ago. Going to England to see my brother and his wife in a couple of weeks so a lot more walking in my future than no am used to. Are they as comfortable as they sound?
Yes, but for running. Running and walking gaits utilize different gaits muscle groups. I would look into Cole Haan walking sneakers. Very comfy and Euro-looking. Like these:
You can probably find them at 6pm and other retailers. Not much more $$ than Flyknits even at full price.
I hear allbirds are the newest thing in comfortable shoes. Only sold on line though. https://www.allbirds.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D&utm_campaign=%7BCampaignID%7B
I personally love SAS leather shoes for walking and wearing with everything from jeans to ponte or dress slacks. They’re supportive and very comfortable.
I have those Cole Hahn shoes for a year plus. They are my traveling shoes. Very comfortable
I shopped all day yesterday both in store and online at Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale. I loved several of the long knee length cardigans but didn’t buy any. I hesitated because I couldn’t figure out how to wear them during our Minnesota fall and winter. We wear jackets and coats most of the year and I didn’t think the cardigan hanging beneath them would be a good look. How do you wear them? Carry it with you until you get where you are going and change after you take off your coat? Let it hang out???
