Dressing Young (Part 1)

ATP, that’s the exact model and color she,ordered!,

Got back from a business trip last night and my red Allbirds had arrived! I love them and have them on today. I’ve gotten a bunch of questions and compliments.

On another note- I managed to fall on my face twice on Tuesday in two different airports (on the concourse). Long story- but my Birkenstock booties, which I love and are great for my feet, are too"grippy" and are like glue on carpet AND tile. I’ve stumbled before but never fallen. Well, my luck ran out. Couple with my heavy computer backpack which didn’t let me recover from a stumble, it was bad. I got xrayed this morning and no broken ribs- just a badly bruised sternum (landed with my arm under my chest). My point is- traveling back home yesterday I wore my Rothys and had NO trouble- never stumbled at all. Whew!

Ouch @MomofWildChild !

I just ventured to the largest mall on the east coast :wink: and 1) it’s already decorated for Christmas (???) and 2) apparently the cropped flare leg pants are quite a thing.

I was just looking to replace a pair of gray work pants - something classic with a little bootcut so I can wear business appropriate heels/wedges/booties under them in the colder weather. Nordy’s was full of pants that ended mid shin and were pretty wide. The sales person said you wear calf-high boots with them. Which I don’t own of course.

The silhouette is looking less odd to me, the more I see it. But luckily I could find gray trousers at Ann Taylor and a fabulous ponte pair of black pants from NYDJ.

Anyone else try this new pant style yet?

Oh my gosh @MomofWildChild. I stumble in my Birkenstock booties also. I thought it was just me.

@deb922 That is so interesting. I wonder if I should email Zappos (where I got them) and register a complaint. I’m so sad, because I LOVE them!

@surfcity

That style of pant makes my legs look short and stocky. Did you try them on?

As I am vertically challenged, you will,probably never see me in cropped or wide legged pants.

I have a few wide cropped legged pants, but agree that they only work on those with proportionally long, fairly slim legs. For summer, I wore them bare legged with block heel sandals. For winter, I like them with a short bootie that just goes up to the ankle, or higher boots so that the leg isn’t exposed at all.

Based on the white jeans thread, I just bought these:

Thinking that I’ll wear them with camel tan suede ankle boots, although the ivory shown looks nice.

What do y’all think of the high waisted jeans? I really like them - although never tuck in so the waist isn’t evident. I like them because they stay put, and I’m not continually hiking up my jeans.

@Gourmetmom

I can’t wear high waisted pants.

I need a low to mid rise, for good fit + better looking for my body type.

I’m in the high waisted crew. Love that look but like you am not tucking in. I did buy a sort of cropped sweater which looks good with a high waisted jean.

I don’t care for the high waisted - I’m don’t like anything fitted around my waist - even tops.

I have a couple of pairs of high waisted pants - no, not tucking anything in. They let me wear cop tops without worrying that my bare midriff would show. :slight_smile: High waisted pants are much harder to shop for, IMO. They need to hug the waist and hips perfectly to look good. Really like the ones @Gourmetmom bought.

@Midwest67 I did not try them on because I was looking for something specific - although I did get concerned that I would find my full length, slightly bootcut gray work pants and then come to discover that NO ONE was wearing them anymore, in favor of these cropped flares! :slight_smile:

I think they would look okay on my as I am tall with long legs. I just am having trouble with what footwear. If they are still in stores for warm weather, that is the way I will ease in. Buying new calf heigh boots is not in the plan for this winter.

I love high waisted jeans, having a long torso. I’m not hiking them up constantly. Like @deb922 , I purchased a slightly shorter or cropped sweater that I can wear because of them. However, my backside is exposed more than I like, so I wear the dark wash. Speaking of jeans, does anyone do the half tuck? I try and unless I’m wearing a jacket, it doesn’t like right on me.

French tuck in front??? Yes, always have. (French Tuck via Tan France, Queer Eye :slight_smile: )

I can only wear it if I’m wearing a jacket. It looks fine on me (without a jacket) both half tuck and French tuck, from the front. As soon as I stand to the side, I have the mommy pooch. I’m still grieving my washboard flat stomach after decades. Of course the bloggers are never standing to the side, either. I do agree it lengthens your legs seeing more pants. Maybe the pooch just bothers me more, or other have it too. In my minds eye, there should be no pooch for it to work.

So, on to the next “young” topic. I’ve never worn leggings with just a long top and boots or booties. Have any of you? I tried it on today and it feels odd. Maybe I need to get thicker leggings. How far should my sweater go past my crouch (not sure how to put it more delicate than that). Seems at our age we can’t get away with it just a couple inches past like the young gals, no matter how cute it looks. I have a long torso, so I find it difficult for them to look long enough, like they need a couple inches more. That’s probably why it feels odd.

One more question. I have a pair of over the knee boots in black suede. Can I wear that with animal print tights and a black sweater dress? The dress is cut slim and it comes down more in the front and back, and cuts up on the side. There wouldn’t be too much of the legging showing. Or are print leggings out? I just thought since animal print is in right now, these would work. I’ve had them several years.

I do wear leggings with a long top and boots or flats. I like the top to be fairly long- definitely at least 8 inches or so below my crotch and longer than that is good. It really needs to be more like a tunic for me to feel comfortable. I see otherwise on planes and at the mall…

Thanks! The 8” rule helps,

I think there was a pretty extensive thread on leggings here. I got a lot of advice out of it.

I generally am only comfortable if the top is truly more of a dress. I’m tall so many dresses would be too short for my taste. But with tights/leggings and boots I can wear them.
