Usually my tops hit mid thigh. I don’t like longer than that on me. I also wear tops that hug my body with leggings, versus more tent like shapes. But, I’m short and thin so “big” clothes swamp me. I will often wear a shorter sweater over my top.
Anyone want to recommend a brand of leggings? I bought the Costco brand a few years ago, but my skin is sensitive and I don’t like the way they feel. I’d prefer something a little softer or with a little more give.
And another question - I have been eyeing this wrap: https://www.garnethill.com/cashmere-wrap/334124
I hear people on here mention a cashmere wrap on a lot of the clothing threads and I really would love a wrap or ruana to have to throw over whatever I am wearing if it is chilly in the house or office, etc. I am definitely always cold, so in the spring fall especially this would be nice.
It just seems a bit pricey to me, although the reviews talk about what a good price it it. I just don’t think an acrylic or cotton item will wear the same way I envision. Does anyone have this wrap or similar?
I wear a lot of dresses/skirts that are above the knee with footless tights. Sometimes leggings. To go out in leggings (when I’m not home or when I won’t have a coat on") I’ll probably have a longer something - either an oversized athletic wear top, a longer cardigan with a regular shirt underneath or a longer lightweight hooded sweater.
If you want to wear leggings for a real outfit I think you have to move up from a Costco type legging. Invest in one good pair and see and feel the difference! I like Athleta myself. If you have store nearby - Athleta or otherwise - go in and try and few pair on. Don’t be afraid to size up to get a fitted but not gut sucking fit.
LuluLemon Align pants (leggings) are fantastic but expensive. I also like the Lularoe leggings in all the patterns and colors. They are only available from all your facebook friends who sell Lularoe (multi-level marketing).
NorthFace makes an excellent, thick denim legging with a high waist. I forget the exact name but I got mine from Zappos.
Soma was recommended o me. I like them
What @emilybee and @MomofWildChild said about tops to wear with leggings. Mine are more like mini sweater dresses, not bulky or tent-like. I also like longish, cosy sweaters to wear with tall boots and leggings.
I would not wear leopard print leggings or tights to work or to run errands, but I would absolutely run in all sorts of crazy print running tights on the trail!
Second the Align pant from Lululemon! I learned about them here on cc when @MomofWildChild posted about them. Now we are trying to outdo each other in the game of who has more pairs! :))
Re: wraps. I stocked up on Nordstrom tissue weight wraps back in the day… they are no longer available, alas.
Looking at this as a potential addition to my collection which has been depleted by kiddos:

I really like black, relatively thick (not see through) cotton leggings with a bit of spandex that have a wide waist band and go fairly high. I have bought them from Old Navy, Gap and Victoria Secret. The best ones hold their shape and don’t bag at the knees and these three have worked well. I wear loose fitting tops that go to about mid thigh with flats or booties. Very comfortable and a staple in my wardrobe.
An example of what I personally would wear with leggings and tall boots:
Or this:
Another lululemon align fan. Ugh! So expensive but really nice. I’m also a big fan of Zella leggings from Nordstrom. They are thick unlike the aligns so I like them when it’s colder out. My aligns are not that warm.
I wear leggings with tunic tops and booties. I’m short and have had a terrible time with tall boots that fit so I gave up and wear booties. I have a tank in black that looks like this one https://www.amazon.com/levaca-Womens-Tunic-Extender-Casual/dp/B06XXBSCH5/ref=sr_1_44?ie=UTF8&qid=1541067622&sr=8-44&keywords=tank+extenders+for+women. I will wear it underneath a tunic top to give it a little more length. I also have a long black tank that I can pull down to cover up my bum.
But as time has gone on and I became more comfortable, I find that my shirts or jackets are becoming shorter. I still look a 1,000 times nicer than a lot of people out. That’s at least the story I tell myself
Another one who only wears leggings with a short dress. Tunics are still too short for me as I have long legs.
@surfcity My husband (not the best bargain shopper) bought me a pashmina wrap nearly 20 years ago. I almost returned it because I knew he spent a lot, but I am so glad I kept it. It has been in constant rotation Fall - Winter - Spring, dressy and casual. It’s also great for travel. I think it’s totally worth the investment. Make sure you choose a substantial size.
Mine is Pashmina so it has a little silk in it. I think that helps keep the moths away - I could cry thinking about 100% cashmere sweaters that have been moth-lunch! My wrap looks as good the day I received it. H bought a red one for me, which is not a color I normally wear, but I find it gives a great “punch” to my neutral wardrobe.
Tops with leggings should come to your fingertips, IMO I like the high-waisted jean but I like tucked in tops. I have seen silky tops tucked in with those jeans (on the Boden website) and they look great.
Here is an example.
I don’t like high waisted pants and I will be sad if mid to lower waisted styles disappear.
I like the top half tuck look. I wear several tops that way if my pants need a belt. I hate the top covering the belt as I think it breaks up the line of the top. It either looks like you have something under your shirt or like you are in need of a bit of weight loss.
I wear leggings with booties or flats. I will do a tunic, sweater or dress that hits me mid thigh to a few inches above the knee. Anything longer doesn’t look good on my body. I tend to go with a top that is narrow. I have fairly narrow hips and no rear end. My body is pretty straight and I find that looks best on me. I also sometimes wear leggings with a longer sweatshirt or t shirt with athletic shoes.I like the look of tall boots but I don’t love how they look on me.
My go to leggings are really athletic ankle length pants by Zella (a Nordstrom brand). They are pretty thick. I also have a pair of soft thick cotton/spandex leggings that are Hue brand. They are about 5 years old so I don’t know if the latest Hue leggings are as thick.
The wrap is beautiful. Can’t speak to price. I think it’d be something worth paying for if you realistically will use it a lot/over time. (Or maybe ask for it for the holidays?)
Thank you @houndmom and @TempeMom. I do think I should consider it an investment piece and it would be a great holiday gift.
I know I have things that I have worn and loved for years. If only there were a way to predict in advance which ones those will be! But a wrap is pretty timeless and not something that doesn’t fit if you gain or lose a few pounds!
I really like to FEEL fabrics to see how smooth/rough they are as well as trying to gauge how easily the may snag before purchasing. I’ve noticed some fabrics are too scratchy and I wouldn’t get use from them.
