Dressing Young (Part 1)

^^^^VERY cute! Great price! I think you’ll get a lot of mileage (pun!) out of this for travel. I think it would be very flattering for lots of people. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the tie in the back - I just prefer no front or back ties!

You can throw on a neutral cardigan or wrap for the plane and take it off when you arrive in Hawaii and be ready for the sun!

I mainly wear ponte pants to travel, with pockets that have snaps to close securely and a long-sleeved shirt with a vest that has zip pockets. If I’m flying back to HI, I wear a sleeveless T-shirt or similar as bottom layer so I can remove layers before landing.

I usually wear leggings/yoga pants w/ long top and a comfy cashmere sweater. I am usually cold on planes.

I have a pair of extremely comfortable long cotton Capri pants from Chico’s. I typically wear with a short sleeve T-shirt or tank, cardigan sweater or cotton jacket, depending in weather. I would like to find a bit more up to date look, though.

For me it depends if it is a work trip or personal trip. If I can get away with it, I wear stretchy skinny jeans with one of my Nuu-Muu running dresses over it and a long sleeved top over that. If it’s work, we are “encouraged” to wear logo wear (and we like to), so it might be a washable blazer or light down vest with the company logo with the jeans or leggings or comfortable black work pants if I have to be presentable at the other end.

I am also in the leggings camp with a couple of layers on top (usually a long sleeved something over a short sleeved something. Something breathable and light but warm. A favorite pair of athletic shoes (not for exercising if possible or if needed for packing space, THE athletic shoes for exercising!) My goal is to be comfortable, to be able to be warmer or cooler and to not look like a schlep!

I would wear the running dress over leggings and then bring along a quarter zip for an extra layer if needed!

I can’t imagine wearing a maxi-dress to anything but a garden party. On planes I wear NYD Jeans, a short or long sleeve t-shirt (depending on the season) and a sweater or sweatshirt jacket with pockets.

I too was not aware that slinky maxi dresses make great travel clothes until one day we were running late and I could not change before our flight. I found it to be quite comfy. Nothing around the waist and I can hide my compression socks under the dress  I can run in this dress and if needed I can ditch it (modesty does not apply in emergency situations) Can’t do that easily with jeans.

Of course, for travel to colder destinations, I wear leggings with long tops.

I don’t have any trips scheduled right now.

But if I was, I’m a big fan of leggings that masquerade as pants. I got these this year https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=353474032&cid=1105218&pcid=1059471 and they are great to travel in. I’m short but bought the regular length so on me they are a little longer. I can wear them with sneakers or boots without bunching.

I would wear these black pants with a T-shirt and denim jacket. Or I have a longer knit jacket that I bought at a local boutique. This is the one I have https://toniadebellis.com/collections/trail/products/molly-jacket-9. It’s so comfortable.

I am so envious of you ladies that can wear leggings. I’ve been trying all fall to find tops to go with leggings, and have that cute pulled together look that I see bloggers wear, but my height and long torso will have none of it. All the tunics hit me way to short on my legs. I just love that casual look, oh well.

I do think a maxi dress would work. Chic, comfortable, wear a jacket! For a real long plane trip, I wouldn’t want my bare thighs touching each other for a long, but for a shorter trip I could,

^^How tall are you @conmama?? I’m sure people here could dig up some longer tunics!!!

I personally don’t want the top over my leggings to be too long. Not short, but not necessarily past my butt. I sort of like a boxy top with a little but not too much length.

@abasket , I’m not super tall, 5’8”, but the long torso makes me look less proportional in certain types of clothing. I look best when tops hit at upper hip, or tucked in. I’m not athletically built, and my bum definitely doesn’t look good exposed in leggings. I think just the look itself doesn’t do me any favors. I did find a shorter dress that looks great with leggings and boots, and I think that’s probably as close as I’ll get. But it’s not exactly what I’m after.

@BunsenBurner OMG. I LOVE that dress. Bummed they are out of my size.

As for travel, I am always cold on airplanes. I hate having anything confining and can’t stand pressure on my waist. I’ve come down to a comfy standard outfit.

I have these pants in several colors. I wear the black pair with some sort of tights, warm base layer or workout legging underneath. I can ditch the under layer if our end destination is a warm climate.

https://www.zappos.com/marty/p/columbia-ultimate-catch-roll-up-pants/product/8798284

I’ll wear a warming base layer on top and then the appropriate outer layer for the destination. If it’s going to be a really long flight I’ll wear a compression style cami and forget about any type of ‘bra’ device.

I’ve been wearing this on most flights

It’s actually quite warm and provides enough pockets to keep my inflight stuff organized.

Finish it up with compression socks and a bootie with zippers. Or in the case of Hawaii a pair of Keds.

@conmama Seems like a high low shirt would look good on you with leggings. Not this one necessarily but this is the idea for it to hit you in the right place in front and back. https://www.macys.com/shop/product/alfani-satin-trim-high-low-t-shirt-created-for-macys?ID=977105

My travel uniform is generally Eileen Fisher washable crepe pants with a tunic and cardigan or soft jacket and a scarf, so I can adjust layers as needed for plane temps or my destination. Comfy and a smidge more dressed up than leggings.

https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ugg-australia-lirette-sweatshirt-dress/3864613 This is my latest airplane top. I wear it with a long tight fitting tank underneath and a longer white t shirt. That way f I get hot I can take the sweatshirt dress off. On the bottom I wear a pair of Hue brand leggings. On my feet I wear a pair of Toms. Sometimes a pair of tennis shoes. I put my compression socks on after we take off. I also have a short sleeve cotton grey t shirt dress I got at the gap several years ago. A lightweight scarf can easily dress the outfit up.
https://www.shoplovestitch.com/collections/clothing-dresses/products/mabel-dress?variant=2095765061656 I bought this for my last long plane ride. I was going to a tropical climate and I was able to pull my leggings off when I arrived.
I’ve never considered a Maxi dress for flying but I could see how it could be comfortable for a long flight in the right fabric. I love that you can easily get compression socks on.

Tangent: several of you mention compression socks. Is this to prevent blood clots? I did not know people wore these routinely on flights unless they had a specific Dx. (DH had a clot last fall, not related to airplane travel so this caught my eye)

I actually wore them for the first time when I went overseas, but it was so my feet wouldn’t be swollen when I got there. Blood clots were just an added benefit, but I should wear them more often for that reason alone. I don’t wear them when I fly just a few hours.

@surfcity - I wear compression socks while flying to keep my legs from swelling. I tend to get swollen feet a lot when I travel. I also have several pairs of low no show compression socks that I wear with sneakers when I’m traveling and doing a lot of walking.

Has anyone watched the documentary on CNN series “American Style” about fashion in America? Lots of interviews and covers many decades. Lots of Tim Gunn and others commenting. I have found it really entertaining.
