Dressing Young (Part 1)

Even if you don’t have to ‘go’ all that often, a jumpsuit is tricky. Keeping the whole thing off the floor - especially if it’s long sleeved requires lots of attention. Never mind if you happen to come upon a facility which, due to previous users or lack of sufficient maintenance, requires squatting.

The taking it off wouldn’t bother me if I loved it, although you have a valid point @raclut. Unless the zipper is on the side, which most of them aren’t, this will be just another piece of clothing I can’t wear now. The list seems to grow each year.

Anyone have good trench coat recommendations? Looking for basic khaki / tan one I can keep for decades. I’m 5’3" 170#+ and my 44" bust says probably-not-Burberry, but that’s the direction I’m leaning in.

Burberry has certain roomier at the top options (the BL Kensington trench, for example, and some of the Brit trenches).

Here are some options:

I like clothes, but don’t like to shop and don’t particularly like parting with the money.

I would find it helpful to identify someone whose style I like & simply copy them.

Blogs are a good idea!

@Midwest67 Great minds, I just subscribed to a few of the blogs mentioned upthread. (if not in this one, then in one of the clothing threads here)

@BunsenBurner Leave it to a PNWerner, those Mackage coats are gorgeous. Putting myself on a notify list for my size in pink and sand . . . decisions, decisions.

I love jumpsuits, but it does require some maneuvering to keep it off the floor in a public restroom.

What I like the most about jumpsuits is that the top stays perfectly “tucked in” - no bubbling or pulling anywhere. I’ll take this!

Love that Karen Millen trench coat. Classic.

Hi there:). Thank you for the condolences, much appreciated. As you know, Mom was late in Alzheimer’s, we are making our peace with her departure even though I miss her.

Always so lovely to get a message from CC. I admit that having gone on to write a blog, and waste/spend countless hours on Twitter, my online community has changed. But I have such fond memories of this place!

As for helpful style bloggers, you all will probably have mentioned everyone, but here are the ones I think are good for people over 40.

  • Une Femme d’un Certain Age (Sue is a friend, and her Socal style is a great mix of appropriate and cool. Also, she’s petite for anyone in that size category)
  • Grechen’s Closet ( she’s pregnant for the first time! Style is very loose, but cool, arty, minimalist. Her body type is not slender, but not plus)
  • A Bag and A Beret (more of an Instagrammer now, good for wild inspiration)
  • Wears My Money (British blogger and Instagrammer, irreverent, London style. If I lived in London I’d want to dress like her. I’d be glad I kept my Doc Martens;))
  • Style at a Certain Age (Beth is gorgeous, her style is less tomboy/edgy/rebellious than mine, more civilized, but what she does she does very well. Very tall, medium frame)
  • Wardobe Oxygen (Alison is a hoot! On the smaller side of plus size bloggers, so much spirit, such a kick)

I hope these are useful? Oh, wait, one more. I recommend everyone who wants to understand color and silhouette from a conceptual/scientific perspective read Inside Out Style by Imogen Lamport, an Australian style consultant. I learned SO MUCH from reading her posts. BTW her own style is not at all like mine, but her knowledge is super duper useful.)

Hope everyone is well? And all the offspring? For anyone who remembers me and mine from the old days, my daughter is in her intern year as a surgical resident at UW, and my son is getting his MFA at University of Riverside. I think they both like school;). xoxoxoxox.

Thank you all for saying hello. <3

@Alumother

Thank you for the recommendations. I started following A Bag and A Beret on IG.

When I read the word “tomboy” in your post, I thought, YES, that’s my style! Unfortunately, I usually look like I’m about to go mow the lawn!

I’m gonna work on that!

So nice for both the advice and update @Alumother. I left condolences on your blog. My style has degenerated over the years, used to be sort of practical preppy. I’d like to dress like Jane Fonda in “Grace and Frankie” minus the high heels and pearls, but rarely actually do. I’m in jeans, an LL Bean t and a longish sweater from Target today. FWIW my oldest is still programming away at his dream job doing stuff no one understands. My younger kid (who was by far the most stylish of any in the family) looks quite sharp in a Navy uniform!

Ha! I definitely default to that;). I find that cool sneakers, jeans that fit well, hoop earrings and UNIQLO graphic tees are my friends…

Re: hoop earrings. I put on my 70s big hoop earrings the other day, looked in the mirror, and said nope!

I switched to a smaller pair of hoops, maybe 1.5 inch?, and those were okay.

The really large hoops, IMO, accentuated my melting face (skin beginning to head south).

On the bright side, I had a couple pairs of the really big hoops and I sent a pair to each daughter. They were so happy!

My pleasure, nice to hear from you again, and thanks for the blog comment. Much appreciated:). I remember your oldest son’s story! And I think Jane Fonda looks spectacular and so elegant and pretty much how preppy ought to be updated/upgraded these days. Especially for California. My hat is off to your son in the navy.

The ones I wear with my tomboy clothes are only about an inch interior circumference - they are handmade, flat, you gotta make sure the jewelry isn’t too boho or too cute when you’re on the tomboy path;). A little boho is good, a little cute, it’s a balance. I get my chandeliers from Blue Nile, BTW, because they make them out of precious metals but super light for my old earlobes. (Am 62)

@Alumother — so glad to hear your kids are doing well and these suggestions on style. I guess I out to go beyond jeans and tshirts.

Sorry about your mom—losing loved ones, especially moms is so difficult but losing them first to Alzheimers and then altogether seems extra tough.

Hi there! My feeling is no oughts in style. It’s up to society to accomodate us - well, maybe not full nudity etc. but I’m really getting to the GNF stage as they say:). And yes, I lost my mom I found a new her in her disease, and then I lost her. I’m OK. But it is tough. xoxox. Hope you and yours are well.
