Dressing Young (Part 1)

I take off my shoes at the door, dh generally doesn’t. Most people see all the shoes in the front hall and take off their shoes, but I don’t make them. I do think it’s more hygenic to take them off at the door, but I didn’t grow up that way. Did spend several years in Japan - where they generally provide slippers. If weather is snowy and I’m going to a party, I may walk over in my snowboots and carry my pristine fancy shoes.

@Singersmom07, neither I nor most HI folks who have barefoot homes offer footwear for visitors or guests. Barefoot is how most folks are indoors, including in hotel rooms. Only when we visit places with cold floors (like SF) are we offered indoor house slippers to keep from having cold feet.

I am in a hotel room now and the first thing I do when I take my shoes off is put socks on that I bring just for the purpose of walking around the room. I really am a shoe person - don’t really like being barefoot - but always wear something on my feet in a hotel.

@showmom858 Ugg makes a lot of different types of boots. Here are a few. They also have “Sorel” type boots

I was just about to recommend Sorels or winter Uggs!! @mom60 - I (used to) have Uggs similar to those linked. Kid expropriated them and uses them as her post-slopes boots.

@BunsenBurner I have one of those kiddos too. I recently bought a new long down jacket for a trip and my H said didn’t I already own one. I informed him that one of his daughters had taken it several years ago. That D is famous for searching my closet when she visits and “borrowing”, I’ve taken to reminding her she can borrow while she is visiting but it’s not going home with her.
My other D is better and will wear a certain pair of boots when she house and dog sits for us. She said she always gets compliments when she wears them. I happen to love them so I’m not parting with them. They also happen to be an Ugg boot that doesn’t look like an Ugg boot.
I grew up in a community with a lot of Japanese Americans and Pacific Islanders and it was common to remove shoes at the door. I don’t have a problem removing shoes if that is the household tradition nor do I think it’s rude to ask your guests to do so. I don’t like it because I’m one of those people who hate going barefoot.
@MomofWildChild love the dress. I think I’ll order it and try it. I don’t normally like below my knee dresses but it’s a good price and easily returned.

Thanks everyone for the boot suggestions!

Just got a pair of Allbirds Tree Breezers in Heathered Black. Comfortable and adorable. Also strike me as more finished, i.e. less casual than their more colorful offerings. Kind of tweedy looking.

I’m wearing Tree Breezers today. I think the color is Marine but they look like a light navy. I prefer my lace up Allbirds but the flat is a more finished look. One issue I have had in the last year when I wear my ballet style flat Rothy, Allbird or Toms is that when I’ve walked a lot my foot sometimes begins to spasm. Not sure what the cause is.
A random observation- just returned from a short vacation to Santa Fe. My H who isn’t that observant pointed out the numerous women sporting what he calls the Elizabeth Warren haircut.

I have the black Tree Breezers and love them.

After the talk of sweater dresses, one blogger I follow posted one from Target that I thought was cute. I decided to try it, and purchased the medium. It clings just a little too much for my liking. (Oh, how I wish I had narrow hips). I tried it on with my spanx shorts and it looks fine. I might try a large just to see. It’s really cute with my to the knee beige boots and my black OTK boots, too. I’d have to wear some sort of black hosiery with that though. I’m on the fence to keep it, but for $20, why not. It’s soft and pretty. I got the burgundy

Great find, @conmama. My secret “shaper” for sweater dresses is my Align pants from Lulu. Yes, they are expensive, but they last much longer than tights and sooo comfy.

I get them in black.

@BunsenBurner , that makes me feel better that others have to use some sort of smoother underneath. I did go ahead and order a large just to see. I have a feeling it will be too baggy, but at least I’ll not always wonder.

I’m excited to wear it!

@conmama nice find, I like the shape and length of that sweater dress. I like sweater dresses with black Zella leggings and I find they work well smoothing things out. I just returned from a trip to Santa Fe and I wore a version of black leggings with either a black sweater tunic style dress or my favorite Ugg brand sweatshirt dress everyday. It transitioned nicely from a day to evening with the change of footwear. Worked well with everything from trail runners to boots. @BunsenBurner how does the Align style compare to the Wonder Under style? I’m thinking I will plan a similar wardrobe for a short trip to NYC in December.
I made a trip to Old Navy to try the denim Rockstar legging that received so much positive response on this thread. I bought them but don’t love them. On the other hand my friend who was shopping with me also bought a pair and texted me yesterday that she is loving them.

I like that sweater dress but don’t like V-neck on me. Not sure why- I just don’t feel warm enough or something. I also wear the Align tights/pants under my clingier dresses.

@mom60 - the Aligns are a bit thinner and silkier to the touch than the Wunders. I can wear either as leggings, but find myself reaching for the Aligns more often.

@MomofWildChild , necklines are funny things. I wear those the best because of my long torso. It visually shortens it. I love crew necks, etc., but they look odd on me.

I do plan on wearing a scarf with that dress. I agree in the winter, my chest can get chilly. Plus, it just needs something more than a thin necklace.

I like a V neck but think I look best in a scoop neck. I need a new pair of black tights so I’ll try the Aligns.

Argh, I’m getting ready to strangle myself. That Target sweater dress that I said was just a bit too snug? Well, it was a small. I remember the blogger saying it ran big. I forgot and thought I had ordered a M.

So I ordered a Large. Finally figured it all out and ordered the M this morning.

But here’s the thing. They are now charging $9 more for the same sweater. I know it’s not much, but it ticks me off. I hope they adjust it for me when I take the S and L back.

I bet they got greedy because so many people ordering it.

I think there was a sweater sale last week, the promotions change on Sunday
