Dressing Young (Part 1)

I’ve considered doing some online shopping, but have some of the same reservations. Will I really need whatever I’m buying? Is it fair to put people who work to pull my items, ship them, deliver them at risk? How do I handle returns if that should be necessary?

For now I’ve done “window shopping” online, but haven’t purchased anything.

Well, I guess I’ll show you what I wanted to buy. I like the Sofia Vergara line from Walmart, and ordered a dress a couple of months ago I thought I might take to Italy. I sent it back, as I didn’t like the sleeves on me. but the quality of the fabric and dress were great for the price point, so I knew I wouldn’t hesitate to try more.

I still love off the shoulder tops, and saw this for $20. I wanted the navy with bright pink flowers. Wear with white skinny jeans.

@Hoggirl , it is depressing with no end in sight. I guess I’ll save a lot of money in my discretionary clothing budget this year! I think I’m entering the anger stage of the grief cycle, with a leg still in denial.

I have exactly those feelings as well. I bought some cute summer shoes in March and I was lamenting to my friends that I don’t know when I’d wear them. They poo poo’d my concerns saying oh it’ll all be over soon. I really think we will be distancing for a long while. I bought a dress to wear to four weddings this spring and summer, all different crowds lol, and they’ve all been rescheduled except for one in early June, we’ll see if that still happens. I’m afraid by the time we can actually attend, I won’t fit in my dress!

I can understand where you are coming from with questioning purchases. Because it would be no pleasure buying things that you literally might not use if you are not going out!

We often talk about the value and motivation of having good quality, nice looking, comfortable but productive exercise clothing for fitness. I think if we are all going to be overall spending more time at home, in our yards, doing very simple entertaining if at all…treat your self to a couple of pieces of new daily home wear. A new colorful skort. A fun pair of walking sandals. A colorful sun hat or sunglasses for all the walks you’re taking. Everyone needs a little mental boost. Meet yourself where you are with shopping!

@abasket - those are excellent points. We live across the street from the beach and are super casual anyway. I love dresses and skorts from Title Nine - I practically live in them in the summer. Am I imagining this or did you post somewhere else that you wear a lot of skorts. If so, where do you like to purchase yours?

I love Title Nine, but I do sometimes wish that their colors were more…primary? I wish they offered more black. Or red.

The Athleta stuff is too plain for me. I love prints. Any thoughts on other places to look for athlesuire type dresses or skorts?

I love my Nuu Muu dresses. I’m part of their team. I run in them some, but mainly wear them as casual wear. I can wear bike-style shorts or tights under them and in cooler weather sweaters or other tops over them. The prints are all great.

I have SO many work/casual clothes and shoes that are just sitting- not to mention my nice purses that haven’t left the house in 7 weeks! I buy running shoes. I wear them and I love when they show up in the box on the doorstep. I also buy running/exercise clothes. At least it’s something.

I did just order a couple of tops from Aerie, of all places. I bought one of their summer sweatshirts last year on a whim and loved it so I got another and a slouchy long sleeve T.

They will be good to wear for WFH but I can still wear when things are normal again.

I looked at my credit card statement. So depressing! We shopped at: Costco, HD, Amazon, TJ’s, Euro deli, Flower World, Metropolitan Market, and our favorite restaurant for takeout. That’s it!!! No diversity. No. Clothes. No. Shoes. Dagnabbit I need to shop some!!! J. Crew had some cute clothes on sale, and Nordstrom now apparently has a drive through pickup!

Heck, I have rarely left the house except to pick up mom and return her to my sister’s and walk around the neighborhood. The kids venture out a bit to buy groceries and once in awhile pick up take out. They only go to a few grocers—two or three markets and Costco. I’m glad they have each other. They rarely allow H or me to buy groceries— we have more risk factors than them.

I’d like to buy some clothes if there was any likelihood of going anywhere on the near future.

@MomofWildChild - those are very cute! Do you know how long they are??? In many of the pictures folks have leggings under them. I really need at least 36” in length and prefer 37”. I am not tall, but thigh-wise - um, gravity. What can I say? I couldn’t find the length of the dresses anywhere on the website. Living in Florida, I don’t want to wear anything under or over them. I want to wear them as a dress. Are they long enough for that? They almost look too short to wear without something else under them - almost like a tunic.

Does anyone have those RipSkirts from Hawaii??? They are kind of like wrap skirts. They come in two or three lengths.

^^ I don’t think anyone here is buying clothes in person. Just online if at all. We’re all in the same boat.

Yes @Hoggirl I have lots of skorts!!! I have bought a lot of them at Athleta - I have some solid “plain” ones but I also have some that are pretty patterns and colors!

I have always wanted to shop in a brick and mortar Title Nine - I have never seen one in any city I’ve shopped in.

I LOVE the Nuu Muu dresses that @MomofWildChild mentioned. Skirt Sports also often has some cute skorts:

@Hoggirl It really depends how tall you are. I am 5’4” and really like to have something under them. They are pretty short. Their customer service is great if you want to email and ask. I almost always wear at least track shorts or track briefs under them. They are SO easy to wear.

Thanks, @MomofWildChild - I just think they are too short for my old lady thighs. But, I appreciate the suggestion!

@abasket - I have never been to a Title Nine store - I only shop online there.

Does anyone else worry that some stores may be out of business by the time this is over? I’m sitting on a fair amount of things I need to return to Athleta and Nordstrom. I read somewhere that GAP is having trouble paying rent.

I really like the prints of those dresses, but they are too short for me.

Gap has been in trouble for a long time, but the Athleta and Old Navy brands were doing OK.

Per some financial news I read, Nordstrom has sufficient cash reserves to last for a year even if the stores are closed. Neiman will likely be toast. Ditto JCPenney and Macy’s.

I got tired of walking in my yoga pants, so for our afternoon stroll to pick up takeout, I wore my favorite jumpsuit with a cardigan to keep me warm. I am eyeing another jumpsuit… but dagnabbit - Outnet is not shipping yet.

I wonder about Dillards.
