Dressing Young (Part 1)

I was thinking it would have to be even smaller than that! “0000”

I had to go all the way to a size 2 in one particular brand of skirts, and I’m nowhere near being a “truly thin woman” - LOL! At least the European clothes makers are still truthful about sizes! If you see a Italian-made clothing item that says “US size 8”, it is usually closer to what in the US is considered “Size 4”!

So do you guys ever pass a store, and although you are not shopping, see something you simply cannot do without? Do you go ahead? And if you don’t, do you regret not giving in to your impulse or are you glad?

^
alumother- I don’t shop a lot, but I have learned that if I see something that I really feel I have to have (assuming it works price/sizewise) I buy it. I used to think I would go back later, but then found too often that it was gone and I regretted it. If I get it home and change my mind, I can always return it.

I don’t shop a whole lot either, but my regrets have definitely been more for what I pondered too long over and lost out on than impulse purchases made too quickly. It helps too, being a little more financially comfortable now than those early days when decisions did have to be really well considered.

Oh good! Makes me feel better about the shirt I bought on impulse this weekend:). It was love at first sight, and reminded me of a sweater I had to retire, so I knew I meant it.

I think if you really love something, you will probably keep loving it. I definitely have regretted things I didn’t get. Like the hot pink converse basketball sneakers…

I still remember the beautiful black silk dress that I did not buy at the Bon. That was 18 years ago :(

I don’t remember the things I missed out on- but I have made two recent splurges that I get compliments on all the time.
I usually just wear kids gloves from REI and an old fleece hat, but I bought some very stylish handknitted gloves( alpaca!) and hat by a women’s collective in Peru at a boutique in my neighborhood, and last winter I bought these boots ( also from a neighborhood shop + they were on sale), and just love them.
[I</a> have the brown ones](<a href=“The Art Company| New Collection | Calzado de Diseño y Calidad Zapatos online para hombre y mujer - Calzado de Diseño y Calidad - The Art Company”>The Art Company| New Collection | Calzado de Diseño y Calidad Zapatos online para hombre y mujer - Calzado de Diseño y Calidad - The Art Company)

What a delightful discussion!

I’m a 50-year-old who has developed an obsession with jackets, raincoats, parkas, outer wear of all kinds. I simply love to buy coats! I just bought the same jacket in a third color on sale at Nordy’s.

Anyone else share this obsession?

I am enjoying this too. It took a long time for me to convince myself that if it was a mistake I could return it (although that almost never happens). Having more money and now working outside the home also helped changed my attitude. It’s so much fun to wear something that you really feel good about and that draws compliments :)

If I try something on and it fits perfectly, I’ll usually buy it. I figure that if it fits that well, it’s meant for me…calling out to me, you know?

My method is that I walk away, and if I’m still thinking about it when I leave the store/mall, I go back for it. About 90% of the time I totally forget about the item.

Last night I bought belts - 5 of them! I had my last child 14 1/2 years ago and believe it or not, I still have belts in my closet from the pre-baby skinny waist era. Even though I lost all my weight after giving birth, my waist will never be that small again. I had this illusion of having a lot of belts but never one to wear. Now I have new ones (all from Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx).

I have to admit, I’ve driven home and then turned around to gone back and pick up something that I walked away from and instantly regretted not purchasing.

Part of the reason that the old belts don’t fit anymore may be that we’re wearing them lower on the hips nowadays.

When I buy a belt, I have to decide how I’m going to wear it - low on the hips with jeans through the loops, or higher over a sweater, because I’ll need a different size. I can’t quite pull off the Michele Obama belt up high on the torso look, even though I am narrower there.

You said it. I bought smalls for belts that I wear at the waist and mediums for jeans/lower pants.

I don’t care for that high-waisted thing that Michelle Obama does with belts. I don’t think it is a flattering look for her (or anyone).

Re obsession with jackets and coats: my H has this! He actually has about 20-25 jackets. They are all over the place. He says he didn’t have a jacket when he was a little boy (lived in CA and his mom thought jackets were’nt needed!).

Not an obsession with jackets and coats, but rather cardigans. Does that count?

And a moment I have to share: I visited my son (college junior) this weekend. While at dinner, he looked over and said “You dress cute.” I would have thought him oblivious to anything I wear. When thanked, he turned out he liked the necklace I wore. Still … what a lovely thing to say.

Sewhappy, I absolutely do!! For me, this obsession developed about 3 years ago. I pretty much hate shopping for clothes, but I love shopping for coats, jackets, outerwear of all kinds :)

^^^ That is really sweet ignatius.

Even though I lost all my weight after giving birth, my waist will never be that small again.

I still have a skirt from Banana Republic from when they had " adventure" clothes, it is really cute and I put it back in my closet- although when I pulled it out the other day to wear, I noticed the waist was almost as small as one of my thighs! How I got into that I will * never* know. Perhaps the ten year old across the street can wear it.
