Dressing Young (Part 1)

mp…I love Zappos too. I also find shoes at NR sometimes.

I’m going to TJ Maxx this week. I need some of those 3/4 length sleeve tops.

I saw a lady at the supermarket today. Short swingy skirt, and chunky shoes. No hose. Her legs were ghost white and NOT thin. I don’t want to be her. Pants are just fine for now…thank you. (Note…she was a spring chicken compared to me!)

I hate those cap sleeves. They are only flattering to younger, thin arms, or to arms of those who work out a lot. I really don’t like any short sleeves. I prefer a sleeve that comes to the elbow or 3/4 length.

I’ve found some 3/4 sleeve tops at TJMaxx, Marshall’s, Eddie Bauer outlet. I also have several elbow-length very light, longer cardigans. I wear those over the short-sleeved or sleeveless tops.

Bunsen–keep looking at Target. They do have really cute tops, but you have to look frequently or they’re gone.

bookiemom, thanks! I do check that Target periodically. I hate our local teens! LOL! Just kidding. I don’t really hate them, I’m happy that there are plenty of them thin enough to fit into the S and M sizes that seem to be flying off the shelves at that Target. :)

I stopped by the TJMaxx on my way home, found a cute CK dress, a skirt, and another CK dress, but no tops. I put them all back on the rack. Targeted shopping! Tunnel vision! Shirts! Tops! (There were a couple of lightweight RL sweaters, but I made a promise to my uber-feminist DD that I would boycott RL  )

I can’t believe that someone else has a “thing” for outerwear and jackets. I have to control myself because otherwise I’d have WAY too many!

I love Polyvore. I’ve made a lot of those collages in the last year:). And for tops, I think the Merona tees at Target are a great product and a good deal. I have a “thing” for very expensive stuff. Which means my closet is really sparse:)…

I admit that I own a few cap sleeved tops, because the color was right to go with something I already owned. But I agree that they are unflattering on most people - they make skinny arms look like sticks and fleshier arms look fat.

Another hater of cap sleeves.
Target is also a 45 minute drive each way. No TJ Maxx or Marshalls. We have a Ross but I have found it isn’t a great one for women’s clothing. Rarely do I find anything wearable for me. Not many high end items. We are getting a new Ross soon that will be bigger. I am hoping the merchandise will be better.
I keep wishing they would get rid of the crappy K Mart and put in a Target.
What are some of your favorite brands for plain T Shirts.

mom60, I must be the only person in the world who likes cap sleves :)

For layering, I like Banana Republic t-shirts with silk trim at the neckline, like this one: [Short-sleeve luxe tee](<a href=“Banana Republic”>Banana Republic)

I like the Sonoma t-shirts from Kohl’s. I have both long sleeve and short sleeve versions.
They are inexpensive so you can buy one in every color! They layer well and wash well.
I prefer the 100% cotton ones over the ones with 2% spandex. The all cotton ones are cooler in the summer and don’t ride up when you layer them like the stretchy kind do.

I like Three Dots three quarter sleeve v-neck tees. They come in lots of colors and they keep their shape after washing

[Three Dots-Deep V-Neck Tee-Neiman Marcus](http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod84130064&eItemId=prod84130064&cmCat=search&searchType=MAIN&parentId=&icid=&rte=%252Fsearch.jhtml%253FN%253D0%2526Ntt%253Dthree%252Bdots%2526_requestid%253D30935)

PackMom- Have never been in a Kohls. I think I am going to have to take an entire day and spend it in the city 45 minutes south of here. They have a great variety of shopping. If I go another 10 minutes I get to the outlets. I might need a whole weekend!
I also like my T’s to be 100% cotton. I also don’t wear my pants at my waist so I like the T shirt to be longer. I also have pale freckled skin and many of the pastel pale colors out this spring just do not look good with my skin.

I have to have all cotton in T’s as well. If there is any synthetic anything, it makes me hot and itchy. I like Ralph Lauren knit shirts: T-shirts with long or short sleeves and polo shirts. I got all of mine at TJMaxx or Marshall’s. I have one all cotton Ralph Lauren polo shirt from years ago with short sleeves all the way to the elbow, with a roll cuff. It looks great, so much more flattering than regular short sleeves.

When I said I hate cap sleeves, really I mean all short sleeves, and sleeveless too for that matter. You have to have Michelle Obama arms to look good in any of that, and I don’t. I almost always wear some sort of thin sweater or layering piece over too-short sleeves, or I wear long-sleeved tops and roll them up to three-quarter length.

one of my goals is to be back to wearing sleeveless without being self conscious. My arms are a bit fleshier than usual now, but with regular weight lifitng, I should be all right by early summer. And I need some sun too…or one of those sun lotions at least!

6 months of free weights, 20 min 3 times a week, and my arms can beat Michelle’s arms  H says my flaps and ailerons are too small to let me control my flying broom  Give it a try! I started with 6-lb weights, then went on to 9-lb ones, and now I’m working out with 15-lb weights. You are supposed to start with the weight that would let you do 8-10 repetitions max until you need rest, then move on to heavier ones as you build your muscles up.

I still have not tried any of the lotions mentioned here, but I have them written down on a piece of paper that is stashed in my bag. :)

Trainer killed me yesterday with weights…my whole BODY hurts today. I know it will be less painful if I keep it up over time. I’m trying those lotions too. Warm weather on the way! At least some part of “dressing young” for ME will include not hiding in sweaters. I’m still not sure about shorts though…we’ll see how those leg presses work.

Yikes! 15 lb weights to work your arms? Do you do curls?

My trainer goes for 3-5 lbs with more repetitions and without rest in between. She says that her method works all of the muscles - triceps, deltoids, pectorals, as well as the biceps. When I start the series, the weights feel too light, but by the time I finish I can barely lift them.

I don’t know about BB…but the last time I did weights, I too, worked up to 15 lbs. Started with 5, went to 10, progressed to 15. 3 reps of ten. Curls, butterflies, rows, overheads. I ripped out this terrific thing from a mag called 'Katie Courics" arms. Took me only about 20 minutes. I also used my h’s bench and benchpressed…50 lbs! Doesn’t sound impressive but it was hard! And all to wear short sleeves!

Gourmetmom, I’m not planning on getting heavier weights any time soon  The advice came from the brochure on women’s health (Harvard Medical School Health Publications) which was given to me by my gyn doc. I followed it, and it seemed to work. I was looking for the pdf of the brochure on the web to post a link, but I can’t find it.

I do exactly what toneranger does. We must have gotten the same brochure :)

I thought of this thread when I finally recognized my age and told the daughter I would give my carried once Marc Jacobs Anouk to her. Sigh.

I also resisted the urge to buy a pair of Camper Twins lookalikes. It has cat motifs hand stitched throughout the shoe.

munchkin - there is always the Advanced Style mode…meaning eccentric is good:). I dream of being eccentric but revert to the classics all the time. However, I might buy a pair of Tom’s…
