Dressing Young (Part 1)

The Sonoma tee-shirts from Kohl’s are really well priced and a nice soft cotton texture.

I also have had good luck with Mossimo tees from Target. Last fall they had a really unusual tee that was a longish short sleeve. Hits an inch or so above the elbow. It seemed to disappear quickly though.

My personal fav tee-shirt is not what I’d call a bargain unless I hit a sale. Ann Taylor’s scoop neck with a little bit of shaping at the shoulders. It’s long so it hits kind of mid-hip and looks good layered under hoodies and sweaters. I love the neckline because it’s kind of low but not so low as a cami when you’re layering. Gorgeous silky cotton. Only comes in long, short or sleeveless unfortunately.

Just got this coat in black at Nordstrom:

[Gallery Three Quarter Length Trench (Nordstrom Exclusive) - Raincoats & All-Weather Coats - Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3069256/0~2376776~2374327~2374337~6004085?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6004085&P=1)

Nice! I have a similar Nordy’s Gallery coat, and it so easy to take care of. It is very waterproof, which works great for me! Too bad mine is black. I should add more color to my wardrobe, especially shoes that are not black.

I’m looking for dark wash trouser cut jeans. I thought I’d found the perfect ones on the Banana Republic web site, then the online reviews say they fit too tight to be a trouser cut, plus they shrink like crazy. Any ideas?

Not sure what a trouser cut is - straight leg?

I often have good luck buying jeans at Macy’s. They have a million brands and the dressing rooms are already a mess when you arrive so it’s no big deal to haul in great arm loads of jeans and try them on until you hit pay dirt.

Lately have been happy with DKNY jeans with a little lycra. Very comfortable and they come in a really dark denim.

I like these - I wear them when I want to look a little dressed up, but also want comfort.

[ANN TAYLOR: Modern Denim Trousers](<a href=“Ann Taylor : Women's Clothing, Petites, Dresses, Pants, Shirts, Sweaters”>Ann Taylor : Women's Clothing, Petites, Dresses, Pants, Shirts, Sweaters)

missypie, I got a nice pair at Ann Taylor. The problem I have with most trouser cut jeans is that they are too wide leg, and make me look about 10 lbs heavier. The Ann Taylor ones are not too tight and not too loose for me.

Oops, I see worknprogress got there ahead of me! Oh well, I second the emotion.

Those Ann Taylor denim trousers look really nice. And a 34 inch inseam means I could even wear heels with them.

Okay this thread is too addicting.

Have been reading and posting instead of doing the work in front of me but now I’m off to Ann Taylor’s to try on a pair of those jeans.

Thanks guys!

Banana Republic clothes, are cut really odd- can’t quite figure out the sizing ( I used to love them though- I still have my vintage safari jacket from BR, from when they had the Jeep in the window).

I like lucky jeans- but they aren’t very dark, I also like 7 for all Mankind, but I haven’t brought myself to buy a pair- but they are cut well, they come in lenghts, and are slimming but not loose/tight.

( I am too short waisted to wear- not your daughter’s jeans" they look like * mom* jeans on me)

I think I have the 2007 version of those Ann Taylor jeans - the wash is not as dark. As I’ve mentioned on the diet/exercise thread, I’m about at my desired weight and my waist size has gone down enough to wear my smaller sized jeans - but my thighs have not budged, so thin cut jeans are tight in the thigh.

I have a black leather jacket from that era - super warm and it’s almost back in style. I’ll never get rid of it!

missypie, if the Ann Taylor trouser-style jeans don’t work, I saw a pair at Gap last week that looked nice.

Also, regrading nice comfortable tees for layering, etc. I’ve gotten many in Bass outlets. I’ve only seen them at outlet malls so I don’t know where else they’re sold but they have great 100% cotton (my preference) tees in many colors and different sleeve lengths. I think they also sell some with lycra but I find them shirts with lycra too clingy for me.

Missy, I bought those dark trouser jeans (on-line) from Banana Republic and I agree, the fit is really strange…tight in the wrong places is the best way to describe it and I ended up returning them… I was bummed. I have real trouble for some reason with Banana Republic if I don’t try on the clothes. I’m going to take a look at the Ann Taylor too because I like the trouser jeans for casual office days! Talbot’s had some nice ones this past winter but I haven’t looked lately to see if they still carry them.

Collage, I’m grow to really like the tees with Lycra because they hold their shape so well, but I buy up one size and that seems to take care of the “clingy” part of them. If you try that just check the shoulders to make sure that the size-up still fits OK at the shoulders. I generally wear them under something (a suit jacket or sweater) so I’m not as picky about the shoulder as I am through the torso. I don’t like to pay a ton for those either, but don’t like the “thinner” cheapies at Old Navy and places like that, but do like the cheapies at Target and Kohl’s. I’ve also bought a couple from Eddie Bauer on sale. The all cotton Eddie Bauer lost their shape pretty quickly and got relegated to beach wear and general slopping around, but the ones with lycra are holding up much better.

Also I’m so proud of myself! About 25 pages ago in the purse discussion I discovered Tano thanks to all of you posters! Just broke down and bought one for summer. I’ll be so excited to be “in-style” and out of all of my safe Coach bags from decades ago. I literally have a Coach for every season and a few in different colors just because - a veritable archival of the old Coach. Wonder what my husband will say!!! I wear wild glasses and can be adventuresome about clothing but terribly conservative about the purses. I’m so jazzed with myself for “stretching” out of my purse comfort zone. A few years ago I tried to stretch and bought a purse, it was a fakey Birken-style bag…my husband called it my grandma bag and asked me what I was thinking. He and all the boys really hated that purse. He’ll probably flip out about this one because it’s a very bright color.

Well, blankmind, if we ever go to an event together we’ll make sure we don’t have matching tops as well!

Tano?

I’m intrigued.

Any suggestions for what pants to wear with sperry topsiders in blue tie-dye that I purchased online during a three-day blizzard in February?

Sewhappy -

To wear with the blue tie-dye deck shoes: white jeans or cropped khakis. Keep the top simple to focus on the shoes. A little yellow in the top is a thought. They sound so summery.

Alumother, I have not checked your blog in a while (bad, bad BB), so when I peeked at it today, I was totally blown away by the blue and white shirt! I want one  That store’s site is bookmarked and added to my list of “must visit” places in SF!

Good BB! I am having coffee with the store owner Monday morning. She wants to hear our opinion on what she should stock. My perspective is that she should tend to the classics, but the classics with a little zing, vs. the way over the top stuff that the company also offers…

If you really wanted a shirt terribly, I’d be glad to pick it up for you and mail it, to the Northwest is it, if I remember?.:).

And sewhappy, one thing I’ve seen women do, particularly in the academic world, is pair casual flats like that with wide legged jeans. Looks funky, and cute. Gourmetmom’s ideas are also good and classic.
