I was enrolled in a class called 3D media design, which was actually a Solidworks class. The entire class was Solidworks, every class we got an assignment of something to make in Solidworks. Sadly, my teacher passed away over the winter break. We just got a new teacher. I don’t want to jump to conclusions because I know what we do in the first week may not reflect what we’ll be doing the rest of the year, but the teacher said the class won’t be only Solidworks anymore. It doesn’t seem like it’ll be only CAD drafting either. He talked about some things he wants us to do and it’s basically a completely different class. Right now we’re doing group projects on different “soft skills”, my group has to do a presentation on “problem solving and critical thinking”.
Would it be bad for me to drop the class? I know I’d have to update all my colleges, which is annoying. I’m looking for something to replace it with but I can’t find many options. Maybe non AP psychology, or sociology? Not sure there are other academic classes I could take. I might be able to get into an online class through the community college but I’d need to get on that quickly since most already started.
My current schedule is not very rigorous at all, so I worry about hurting my college admissions chances if I drop another class. I’ve already been accepted to 3 so would I need to email them first and confirm that dropping wouldn’t cause me to be rescinded?
First semester senior year:
AP Econ + gov
Engineering
AP Chem
IB Lit
3D Media Design
XC (takes up a class period at my school)
Statistics at community college (I took calc BC last year)
Second semester is the same except XC became track and my stats class ended (it was one semester). I’m doing an online math class starting in March though.
It is very hard to know based on what you have said so far. However, I am thinking that this class might turn out to be more useful than you expect. I might be tempted to stick with it, particularly since you said that your current schedule isn’t rigorous, which sounds like you are not stressed with too many classes.
@DadTwoGirls I guess so. I can’t remember everything he mentioned that he wants us to do but it just doesn’t seem very interesting/useful or I already know how to do it. Seems like it’ll be a very basic tech skills class-- he talked about having us do a project where we make a short screen recording video, or making a short animation using some software. Like I said, I’m willing to wait a little longer to see if I’m right about this, but if I am then I really don’t want to stay in the class if I don’t have to. I’d like to have a Plan B.
I’m thinking about signing up for an online personal finance course, which I know isn’t really a replacement but would give me another thing to do and is definitely practical/needed. I might do that regardless of the situation with this class.
When you enrolled in 3D media, did you expect it to be nothing but Solidworks? Did the instructor tell your class that you would continue to focus on Solidworks for the whole year?
Learning other aspects of 3D media makes good sense, and possibly was in the original curriculum of the course - you just didn’t get to the other topics before you lost your instructor. Hang in there for a bit longer, and see how the course shapes up.
Also talk to the Department head or GC to see what the teacher’s plan is…it maybe that this person has no knowledge of Solidworks so is just trying to fill in with something.
I think I’m going to stay in the class mainly so I don’t jeopardize my college admissions by dropping it. Might add an easy online course for something I’m interested in. Not sure if the personal finance one would be very useful or just like common sense. I’m looking into taking a sociology or psychology course.
