Drunk on the LAC Kool-Aid!

Many people in rural areas are afraid and intimidated by the state universities…the size, intellectual snobbiness, sex, drugs, drinking, etc. They automatically think that any LAC is better than the state flagships despite the fact that in general, most LACs attract a lower quality student than the flagships (just look at the ACT ranges at the LACs in iowa, almost all are below the flagships).

<p>Middle 50% ACT scores, Iowa research universities:
University of Iowa 23-28
Iowa State 22-28</p>

<p>Middle 50% ACT scores, Iowa LACs:
Grinnell 28-32
Luther 24-29
Cornell College 24-29
Coe College 23-28</p>

<p>Sure, you can find some lower, but then you can also find public universities in Iowa that are lower.</p>

<p>And here in neighboring Minnesota, you’re more likely to hear complaints about “intellectual snobbiness, sex, drugs, drinking, etc.” in connection with Carleton and Macalester than with our state flagship (not that the flagship doesn’t have sex, drugs, drinking, etc., but because it takes place in the middle of a major urban center, it stands out less).</p>
