I read a piece about how news organizations are wrestling with how to report this story. I think with Duggar, the reasoning behind outing him was that he used to make a living telling other people what is and is not the right way to conduct their sex lives, according to his reading of the Bible. And that he wanted to turn his ideas into law.
So are any of these people serious about what they allege they believe? Is Jim Bob?
I actually have no doubt that many/most of them are “true” believers. But I also think they believe in a way of life that is impossible for most people to maintain. I think they believe in the idea of the lifestyle more than the lifestyle itself.
But who knows? Until one of the kids breaks out of the cult, we’ll never get the full story.

Someone asked why only Josh Duggar’s name has been released. I just heard that the “viral pregnancy blogger” Sam Radar has also had his name released.
I didn’t realize it until now, but he is also using the Internet to evangelize his Christian beliefs. Of course.

On the photos - Josh used another man’s photo for Ashley Madison. Different guy from OKCupid. Do those men have any legal recourse?
He’s dragged at least two other men into this mess.
It appears to me that this boy lived such an extremely sheltered life that when he eventually got out into the world his immaturity and naivete’ became very much apparent.
Who in their right mind would use the pictures of well known and recognizable people as their own profile?? Did he honestly think that people would not recognize them and that he might be putting them at risk if someone did? When he showed up for these trysts did it not occur to him that the women might recognize him? Or that he was putting himself in an extremely vulnerable position by engaging with these women who now had “something on him.” Is it stupidity or lack of experience in the world?
I thought the same thing about Jared Fogle. He was on TV a lot promoting Subway. And what he was doing will land him in prison.
It’s not just the sheltered who can later have issues. Nor do all sheltered folks grow up to be menaces. And, as ever, watch how much trust you put in gossip rags. It’s not unheard of for someone to pull a pic from another source. Nor for someone to use another’s details.
Yes, I think it’s telling that he admitted something. But some comments seem to be racing ahead. Just saying.
The TV show Catfish is all about people seeking partners who deceive with someone else’s profile picture.
^^I don’t think anyone is saying “just sheltered” or “all sheltered” are menaces. The timeline of supposive history for Josh (and his family) is getting longer and longer and harder to hide behind. People will race ahead. People will also shelter their eyes from the facts. It’s what we do. But just looking at the hard facts - the words of Josh, the words of his family - about themselves and others - cannot be ignored and is a slap to the humanity that most of us live under.
The people who did the Ashley Madison hack said they did so because AM said it would delete all references to subscribers who paid a fee, and the hackers said AM wasn’t deleting the information. Josh Duggar was certainly not a target!
Yes, abasket, am there with you. Longer and harder to hide behind. I just don’t think we can predict for the other brothers or necessarily make statements that the sheltering is the cause.
I heard the hackers demanded AM shut down or they would release the details. And when they didn’t… Then, when it was made public (apparently the size of the files is so huge, it takes time to download,) a number of groups went on the hunt. It may have been in a link here, but that as JD is already simmering in the pot, he seemed the obvious one to publicize first.

But using a profile pic of someone else who is also easily recognizable or well known makes me believe he does not understand how the internet works. Wasn’t his computer access limited while he was living at home? Maybe I am reading too much into it but that seems to be really poor thinking and I do think at least one of those people will avail themselves of their legal remedies – I would.
I think the deal is, if a pic is already public, you’d have to prove it was now used for some malicious intent.
