Duke Early Decision Class of 2030 Official Thread

My child’s stats are good. 1550 SAT, 4.7 weighted GPA, 13 APs by the end of senior year, straight As, applying for global health and music double major. Plans to ED to Duke. What are the chances?

I have 2 other questions:

  1. How important is the glimpse video?
  2. When you ED to a school, should you submit your application at least 15/20 days before the deadline?

Once you submit an application, the school will send personal credentials to log into a portal that will show progress of the application along with information that they have received and what could be missing. Some portals also have financial aid tab. It is also where the decisions and any merit/aid is posted.

For a school like Duke, what I have learned is that it is really hard to chance since the pool is large and admittance rate is low so it all depends on what they are looking for as a fit and goes beyond these stats. Good luck!!

Agree with prior response - many with similar stats will be turned away from Duke given the competitive applicant pool. Your daughter has excellent metrics that will keep her in contention, but that’s just one piece of the holistic review process.

In terms of Glimpse, I haven’t seen any information about how important it is. But it’s another way for the admission committee to learn more about the applicant. I think it’s worthwhile to submit unless your daughter isn’t comfortable doing so.

I’m not sure about the application timeline, but I don’t think there’s an advantage to submitting 15-20 days beforehand. Just be sure that the application is complete (i.e. recs & test scores submitted, etc.) prior to the deadline.

Hope this helps!

Your child is a very strong applicant. Some people are wasting their time applying to a school like Duke. Your child is not. The odds are still very much against them, because the odds are against everyone.

ED makes things even more murky. About 10% of the Duke student body is recruited athletes. They are told to apply ED. The same for legacies who want consideration of this status. The same for the children of important/famous people (like the Seinfelds, who had all 3 of their kids accepted to Duke). It isn’t even clear if applying ED is a real benefit at Duke (or similar schools) for applicants without one of these hooks.

Does that mean chances are higher if going RD? Or is it more chances are higher to be deferred and then enter RD pool? Or is it that chances are higher to be rejected in ED vs RD?

I certainly don’t know for sure. My guess, there is a slight advantage for an unhooked applicant to apply ED, but it is not the substantial advantage that is often discussed.

when i was in middle school, i particiapted in the duke TIP (talent identification program) should i mention that in the why duke essay? i wanted to say something like this: as a middle schooler in the duke TIP program, i aspire to come back to do engagement projects and learn with a diversity of peers as Duke did for me at an early age.

when are acceptances given out

I believe the ED decisions come out around mid-December. RD is March I think.

My son received communication that he was selected for an alumni interview which took place last week. Has anyones else had their interview? I hear they are not offered to everyone.

D26 has hers this week. They try to interview as many ED applicants as possible. Depending on numbers, it’s usually those who submit late who may not get assigned to someone. I hope he enjoyed it. It’s really just another way for the school to get to know these kids and also to make sure they can get their questions answered as well. Very low key.

Had your daughter submitted a Glimpse video? I wonder if they interview students who have submitted a Glimpse video or not.

yes

I don’t think the glimpse is too significant considering it’s fee based and minimal in content. I do believe interview goes farther with an alumni, but also is less significant vs most of the app. Considering scores are now only considered, and essays not weighty due to AI presence, there’s much difficulty in chancing anyone at a school so highly tiered/ low accept rate. Imo, and this is with one at Duke, ECs are taken very seriously and a lack of them is problematic- they’re interested in a eclectic student body and seem to get it each year.GL

My son did not. He raised a question during a virtual info session and the offer said it was supplemental and not required… and that it would not negatively impact his application.

Compared to previous years, when will be decisions be coming out? Are we thinking Dec 15 or Dec 11?

We are wondering the same thing. It’s varied a lot in past years, from the 10th to the 18th. Hopefully sooner than later…

Unfortunately Duke is all over the map when it comes to release date. No consistency on date or day of the week. I’m thinking anytime between the 12th-18fh, except the 14th - they’ve never released on a Sunday from what I can tell. Hoping for the 15th or 16th :crossed_fingers:

I just saw on a Cornell ED thread that the Questbridge match letter from Cornell said that their official acceptance letter would be available in their portal on Dec 18 at 7pm, leading most to speculate that that is the ED release date. Does anyone know a Duke Questbridge match and if the Duke letter gave a date to check the portal?
