My child’s stats are good. 1550 SAT, 4.7 weighted GPA, 13 APs by the end of senior year, straight As, applying for global health and music double major. Plans to ED to Duke. What are the chances?
I have 2 other questions:
How important is the glimpse video?
When you ED to a school, should you submit your application at least 15/20 days before the deadline?
Once you submit an application, the school will send personal credentials to log into a portal that will show progress of the application along with information that they have received and what could be missing. Some portals also have financial aid tab. It is also where the decisions and any merit/aid is posted.
For a school like Duke, what I have learned is that it is really hard to chance since the pool is large and admittance rate is low so it all depends on what they are looking for as a fit and goes beyond these stats. Good luck!!
Agree with prior response - many with similar stats will be turned away from Duke given the competitive applicant pool. Your daughter has excellent metrics that will keep her in contention, but that’s just one piece of the holistic review process.
In terms of Glimpse, I haven’t seen any information about how important it is. But it’s another way for the admission committee to learn more about the applicant. I think it’s worthwhile to submit unless your daughter isn’t comfortable doing so.
I’m not sure about the application timeline, but I don’t think there’s an advantage to submitting 15-20 days beforehand. Just be sure that the application is complete (i.e. recs & test scores submitted, etc.) prior to the deadline.
Your child is a very strong applicant. Some people are wasting their time applying to a school like Duke. Your child is not. The odds are still very much against them, because the odds are against everyone.
ED makes things even more murky. About 10% of the Duke student body is recruited athletes. They are told to apply ED. The same for legacies who want consideration of this status. The same for the children of important/famous people (like the Seinfelds, who had all 3 of their kids accepted to Duke). It isn’t even clear if applying ED is a real benefit at Duke (or similar schools) for applicants without one of these hooks.
Does that mean chances are higher if going RD? Or is it more chances are higher to be deferred and then enter RD pool? Or is it that chances are higher to be rejected in ED vs RD?
I certainly don’t know for sure. My guess, there is a slight advantage for an unhooked applicant to apply ED, but it is not the substantial advantage that is often discussed.
